Getting to know Esperanza Sigala - Volleyball
Esperanza Sigala, I’m in 12th grade and I’ve been playing volleyball for the past 4 years
Where do you see yourself after high school? Do you still see yourself in your sport or
move on ?
I see myself moved on. I see myself moved on playing softball in college. Colorado University of Pablo.
If you could be any athlete for a game who would you pick and why ?
I would pick Messi because he’s really good at his sport and he has good footwork on that soccer field.
How do you manage life as a student athlete with long practices and late night games ?
I manage it by doing my, any work I can when I have like, any, um, spare time
How would you compare this season to last ? What are the major differences ?
I'd say major differences, well, I don't think there's any major differences. All we did was lose one senior, but she did play a big role in the court.
What makes you unique compared to anyone else on the field ?
I think my personality makes me unique. I'm very funny and loud on the court.
How do you reset mentally after a tough loss or performance slump?
I usually just try to forget about it and my teammates cheer me up.
Pre-game hype music or silence and focus? What song or how do you focus ?
I'd say silence and focus to get my nerves down.I focus by just being quiet and thinking about what I'm gonna do on the court.
If your team had a movie made about them, which actor plays you, and who plays the coach?
I would be played by Alicia Silverstone from Clueless, and my coach would be played by Adam Sandler.

Tom Brad. He's the best ever to play quarterback.
How do you manage life as a student athlete with long practices and late night games ?
I'll focus on my work outside of school at home, make sure I get all that done. Also I make sure that when I'm at practice I'm focused at practice.
How would you compare this season to last ? What are the major differences ?
I have to take more responsibility over the team, and I feel like I have to be more of a leader. as well. Those are some of the major differences.
What makes you unique compared to anyone else on the field ?
I feel like my job is harder, there's a lot of things that go into it, and knowing the place, trusting my teammates. Being able to execute a game plan
How do you reset mentally after a tough loss or performance slump?
I just try to focus on the next week, if it's a loss, then I obviously watch film too, I can improve on, and then we focus on the next week.

move on ?
I see myself in a four-year university. Still playing football, hopefully. And that I have a good time in college.
If you could be any athlete for a game who would you pick and why ?
I would probably want to be newly unretired Aaron Donald because he had a great impact on the sport
How do you manage life as a student athlete with long practices and late night games ?
I try to get to my house as soon as possible so I could do my work that I missed in the class. And so I could just have better grades to perform better on the field
How would you compare this season to last ? What are the major differences ?
New coaching for sure. We have a new coach coming in, Tige McSwain. I think he's a great coach. He's coached at higher levels before. So I really look up to him and hope for him better and for a better season too.
What makes you unique compared to anyone else on the field ?
I would definitely say I'm like a bigger stature, bigger size than most of the guys my age. So that's where I have that's what I used to my ability all the time. So a good advantage.
How do you reset mentally after a tough loss or performance slump?
After a loss, I would probably look at my film to see what I've done good, whatever I'd done, not so good, to work on that in the next practices. And so I could just improve on that and look forward to the next game.
Pre-game hype music or silence and focus? What song or how do you focus ?
definitely, I wouldn't say pregame hype, but definitely like a more mellow type of music.I would definitely say like, I listen to more like Daniel Caesar, like Melo type of music.
If your team had a movie made about them, which actor plays you, and who plays the coach?
I would like to say I'm more of an Adam Sandler type of guy, so that's what I think I would choose. And the coach, I would say, Adam Sandler's friends or something. Or maybe Denzel Washington.

Just by making time for myself, like, at the end of the day, making sure I reset.
How would you compare this season to last ? What are the major differences ?
Some major differences are, like, a lot of team effort, um, everyone's more nicer. there's no, like, talking behind people with bags. more communication within the team and, like, expressing their feelings more, like without hiding it,
What makes you unique compared to anyone else on the field ?
I’m very cheerful and I’m always hyping my teammates up. I also never let anyone see me get down
How do you reset mentally after a tough loss or performance slump?
I really just eat, eat anything, like, I snack hard after a game. It feels like a reward win or lose
Pre-game hype music or silence and focus? What song or how do you focus ?
I think I prefer hype, though, because it makes me get more into the mood, but like, I don't have a specific song. It's just like everybody's like music that makes me more hype
If your team had a movie made about them, which actor plays you, and who plays the coach?
I think cook would be played my Samuel L Jackson and I would be played by Anna Cathcart.

Probably the fact that I'm the youngest because I have a late birthday.
How do you reset mentally after a tough loss or performance slump?
I try to tell myself that, like, I could do better, and, like, I have done, like, better things. Like, I've been a better player and I could be a good player.
Pre-game hype music or silence and focus? What song or how do you focus ?
silence and focus, but I will listen to it, like, hype music if, like, on certain times. since you guys, like, put like a playlist, I just listen to it, because they're mostly all hype songs.
If your team had a movie made about them, which actor plays you, and who plays the coach?

move on ?
I see myself studying medicine in a program. Hopefully, hopefully, I still play volleyball in the future, but I'm still not sure.
If you could be any athlete for a game who would you pick and why ?
I would be Bergen Reilly from Nebraska volleyball because she has very good leadership, and she knows she's very determined in her spot.
How do you manage life as a student athlete with long practices and late night games ?
I tend to stay very organized and I like to have like everything balanced and I like having an agenda. So that's how I balance out late night games and the late practices.
How would you compare this season to last ? What are the major differences no longer being a freshman on varsity ?
I feel like the team didn't have that much stress in each other, and this in this season, we're definitely building on that and having interesting everyone on the court. I do miss being a freshman and the “hype”
What makes you unique compared to anyone else on the field ?
Well, what made me unique is that last year I was the 1st freshman on varsity after 4 years. What makes me unique now is since I'm a setter, I tend to be, like, the leader of the court, and I do the plays, and I tell everyone where to hit, tip, or stuff like that
How do you reset mentally after a tough loss or performance slump?
I just talk to my teammates and family to try my best to shake it off.
Pre-game hype music or silence and focus? What song or how do you focus ?
I honestly like silence and focus. Instead of like talking to my teammates, I kind of stay to myself and during warm ups, I kind of just watch what each player does to see how they play.
If your team had a movie made about them, which actor plays you, and who plays the coach?
The movie would probably be grownups because I feel like we miss around a lot during, like, games and practices. I would be played by Adam Sandler. My coach would be King Triton from the little mermaid because she’s very good at keeping everyone intact

Come to Our Booster Club Meeting on Monday September 21st at 6:30 pm in the Library and find out more ways to get involved.
You are an integral part to helping create a positive youth sports experience for your athletes.
Get involved in the team. If the coach has a snack schedule or needs extra hands at practice, consider helping out if your athlete is open to it.
Being more connected to the team will give you a better understanding of what your athlete experiences.
Before a game, help your athlete prepare with the right rest, good nutrition/hydration, and encouragement.
Cheer positively and show Good Sportsmanship. Everyone enjoys the game much more when the Fans are Positive.
Keep your athlete in multiple sports if they enjoy them! . In most cases, specialization before 12th grade is not a good idea and athletes may not only miss the fun and connection of playing other sports~~ It's a Win WIn!
If your athlete needs support in class, help them to advocate for themselves Early and Often. Students can work with their teachers, with their counselor, with admin. and or with the Athletic Director if they need academic support.
At every possible turn, let your athlete know that you love them unconditionally (by saying it!), regardless of their athletic performance. Enjoy your athlete’s time in youth sports. It goes quickly, and you will want to look back, in conversation with your grown athlete, on the good old days.
