Celebrating Staff Appreciation Week – May 5-9

Dear Kinnaman Families,

As we approach Staff Appreciation Week from May 5th to May 9th, I want to take a moment to recognize the incredible dedication and hard work of our educators and staff at Kinnaman. Our teachers and support staff give so much to ensure that every student at Kinnaman feels like they belong, believes in their potential, and is empowered to achieve their best.

Our staff members are truly the heart of our school community, and their commitment to nurturing the academic, social, and emotional growth of our students is unmatched. They go above and beyond to create an environment where every child can thrive, and we are so fortunate to have such a passionate and caring team.

During this week, I encourage you to take a moment to thank and celebrate the wonderful individuals who make a difference in the lives of our students each and every day. Whether through a simple note of appreciation, a kind word, or a small gesture, your support means the world.

Thank you for partnering with us in this work. Together, we continue to ensure that all students at Kinnaman feel seen, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential.

With gratitude,

Dr. Hudson

Meet our PE Teachers!

My name is Jeff Lierman and I am one of the PE teachers here at Kinnaman. I have been teaching and coaching for...forever and I've been at Kinnaman for 27 years. I've always enjoyed working with students to figure out what activities they really enjoy and can use for lifelong activities.

A little bit about me- I grew up in the country and went to a two-room schoolhouse. The same school my mom went to, with horse stalls in the back. I worked for one of the largest grass seed farms in Oregon from age 9-25. I enjoy golfing and fishing.

Our overall goal in our P.E. program is to encourage students to enjoy physical activity, build confidence, and develop habits that will keep them healthy throughout their lives. In other words, we focus on developing their Physical Literacy. Come volunteer for Field Day on June 10th!

I'm Amanda Carkner and I am one of the PE teachers at Kinnaman. This is my 10th year in the district. I've taught PE for the past 5 years and I was a classroom teacher (3rd and 4th grade) for the first 5 years in my career. I'm at Kinnaman halftime and my other half is spent at home with my two sons (1 and 3 years old). For fun, I love to travel, spend time with my family and be outdoors. Fun fact about me: I love the Oregon Ducks and enjoy watching college football with my family! Go Ducks!

I really enjoy teaching and encouraging kids to stay active and helping them have the tools to make healthy choices throughout their lives. I've loved getting to know the students and the amazing community at Kinnaman this year. I've felt so welcome, Kinnaman is such a great school!

May Bike Week is May 5th - 9th

Get ready to pedal your way to school during the Beaverton Safe Routes to School May Bike Week from May 5th to 9th! This district-wide event encourages all students to bike or wheel to school, promoting a healthy and eco-friendly way to commute.

During this exciting week, the 'Bike Fairy' will be making special visits to all schools, leaving prizes for any wheels found in the school racks. It's a magical way to start the day and reward those who choose to cycle to school.

We invite you to download our planning guide, which includes graphics and articles to share with your school community. Let's make this Bike Week a memorable and fun-filled event for everyone!

A NOTE FROM YOUR SCHOOL NURSE ABOUT YOUR CHILD’S VISION

Did you know? 1 in 4 school-age children will have a vision disorder requiring treatment. Early detection and treatment are critical to avoid long-term vision and learning problems. If not detected and treated early, vision loss may occur.

A vision screening helps find children who need to see an eye doctor for an eye examination to find out if children have vision disorders or eye health problems.

A child may falsely believe:

· The way they see is the way everyone sees

· Blurred vision is normal

· Seeing clearly with only one eye is not a problem

How do you know if your child might have a vision problem?

Look for the “ABCs” to assess possible vision problems:

A– Appearance: Does the child have eyes that are red, cloudy, watery, droopy, encrusted, or do not line up or look straight ahead?

B– Behaviors: Does the child avoid near work, squint, tilt their head, or hold books close to their face?

C– Complaints: Does the child mention complaints about light sensitivity, blurred or double vision, headaches, dizziness, “tired eyes,” or itchy eyes.

Please reach out to your school nurse, kori_carbonaro@beaverton.k12.or.us or the National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health website for more information.
