Back to School Registration and Registration Packet

Each year, all students are required to complete Back to School Registration prior to the first day of school. In order to help you prepare for this process and help things run as smoothly for you as possible, BHS has their own Registration packet for your review. This document includes important information and paperwork that will be useful for both the online and in-person parts of the Registration process. As referenced, the Registration process has two parts, outlined below:

  • The first part is completed by a student's parent/guardian online via ParentConnect. Parents/guardians will be asked to review certain documents, verify/update certain information within the system, and will have the option to purchase items for their student (i.e. parking passes, class t-shirts, etc.). This part of the process MUST be completed prior to your student being able to complete the in-person portion of Registration on their designated day and time.
  • The second part is completed by the student, in-person, on a specific day, within a designated window of time. In-person Registration is completed on a first come first served basis within the student's designated window of time. This is when students will get their school pictures taken, get their Student ID card (needed for entering/exiting the building at any time other than before/after school), will pick where they would like to park (from the available options), and pick up their schedule. In-person Registration days and times are provided above, but also listed below:

Seniors - Monday, August 25th from 8 - 11 am

Juniors - Monday, August 25th from 12 - 3 pm

Sophomores - Tuesday, August 26th from 8 - 11 am

Freshmen - Tuesday, August 26th from 12 - 3 pm

In-Person Registration Reminders:

  • If you cannot attend at your scheduled time, you can attend a LATER Registration session, but NOT an earlier one. Siblings wanting to complete registration together should do so at the later of the two times.
  • Part 1 (online portion) must be completed in order for you to complete in-person registration.
  • Must have all necessary paperwork outlined on the parking application in order to pick up a parking pass.

Online Back to School Registration Component - Now Open in ParentConnect

As mentioned above, there is an online Back to School Registration component that is completed via ParentConnect. The online Back to School Registration component is now available for you to complete. This is different from DISTRICT ENROLLMENT you may have seen advertised online where you must submit very specific documentation, including proof of residency. As a reminder, all parts of the online Back to School Registration MUST be completed in order for students to be able to complete their in-person registration later this month. If you are unable to complete it at home, we will have devices available as well as volunteers to support you in doing so during your scheduled Registration time on the 25th or 26th.

If you are having difficulty getting signed in to your ParentConnect account, you will need to contact pc@brightonk12.com for additional support with getting logged in.

AI Do's and Don'ts for Students

As technology continues to evolve, students have new AI tools that can support learning. While AI can be a valuable resource for research, brainstorming, and practice, it is important to understand how to use it responsibly to enhance understanding, not replace it. We will be supplying students with this Do’s and Don’ts Guide, so we thought you might find this helpful when supporting your child in using AI appropriately at home. This guide outlines practical tips for when AI can be helpful, and when it can interfere with learning. Our goal is to help students build strong skills, think critically, and complete their work with integrity.

School Lunch Information

As mentioned in Dr. Outlaw's most recent Superintendent Newsletter, there is still uncertainty over the state budget. However, we have been receiving a number of questions about the status of free meals for the upcoming school year. At this time, what we know is that breakfast and lunch will minimally be provided to all BAS students through September 30th, which is when State funding for the program expires.

More information on this specific program from Dr. Outlaw's newsletter can be found below:

Government-Provided Meals Program
In 2023-24, the State of Michigan began the Michigan School Meals Program, which provided free meals to Michigan students. As revenue decreases in the wake of the end of COVID relief funding, the legislature is debating whether to continue this program into the future. This is directly in both the Governor's and Senate versions of the budget, but the House rolled these dollars into one pot of money that could allocated at the discretion of each district.

We will continue to monitor negotiations, but breakfast and lunch will minimally be provided to all BAS students through September 30th which is when State funding for the program expires.

We will keep you up-to-date as negotiations unfold and we thank you all for your patience.

Academic Letters

Each year, Brighton High School students are eligible to earn their Varsity Academic Letter for accumulating a 3.5 (or higher) grade point average for two consecutive semesters. If your student is a FIRST-TIME Academic Letter recipient, they will be able to pick up their Varsity Academic Letter in the BHS Cafeteria during their designated Registration. This will allow students to get their Academic Letter earlier, especially for those looking to purchase varsity jackets in time to get them before the colder weather comes in.

If your student has earned their Academic Letter previously, they will receive their bar and certificate at the Academic Letter Lunch in November! All parents of students receiving their Academic Letter and students receiving their Academic Letter will be invited to the Academic Letter Lunch on during their regularly scheduled lunch time in November (date TBD).

Missing In Person Back to School Registration?

If your student is unable to attend either Registration Day, it is not the end of the world. They can get their school pictures taken on Picture Retake Day, which normally takes place in mid-October. They can get their picture taken and a Student ID card made before or after school in the Main Office. Once they have their ID card, they can have their sports pass added to their ID card if they purchased one. Parking passes can be purchased in the Main Office and student schedules will be visible online in their StudentConnect account after our Registration days have passed. All other items can be taken care of online.

1st Day of School

Once again this year, we will be running an alternate schedule on the first day of school. Only incoming Freshmen will be showing up and be in their classes at the normal school start time of 7:30 am. This will give them the opportunity to navigate their class schedule will less hallway traffic, attend class and lunch with students they are more familiar with, and also attend an assembly the second half of the day that will hopefully ease their transition to BHS. The schedule for the day can be found here.

*If your student is in grades 10 -12 and is scheduled to attend a consortium class in another district (i.e. construction, private pilot, etc.), they should attend their consortium class on the first day of school at its regularly scheduled time. They will be excused from any BHS classes on the first day that conflict with their consortium class, and we would plan to see them in their regularly scheduled classes starting on Wednesday, September 3rd.

1st Day of School Transportation Schedule

As shared previously, our Freshman will be starting the day at the normal time (in class by 7:30 am) in the building and in their classes without any 10th, 11th, or 12th graders present.

Our 10th, 11th, and 12th graders will attend on the first day, just not until later (in class by 12:00). We WILL have bus transportation available for all students on the first day of school, regardless of when they start their day. Additional information is provided below:

9th grade: Pickup will be at your regularly scheduled time that has been provided to you by the Transportation Department. This will get students to BHS by 7:00 or shortly after that and give them plenty of time to get to their 1st hour class by 7:30.

10th, 11th, and 12th grades: Transportation has shared with us that pick up will be 4.5 hours later than the time they will find on their normal transportation bus information (i.e. if normal pickup provided by transportation is 6:30 am, pickup on the FIRST DAY ONLY would be at 11:00 am). This will get students to BHS by 11:30 or shortly after that and give them plenty of time to get to their 1st hour class by 12:00.

After the 1st day, the bussing schedule will return to the normal pick up and drop of schedule as provided by the Transportation Department. Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Student Pick Up and Drop Off Information for Parents

We would like to take a moment to remind everyone of the proper drop-off/ pick-up procedures for your students at the High School. First thing, we want to make sure your students are safe. This will always be our #1 priority! This includes our security staff who our out directing traffic, rain or shine, to ensure your students’ safety, while also attempting to keep traffic flowing through the loop.

There has been an increase in student drivers to start the year each of the last few years and the lots will fill up quickly. This means A LOT of NEW drivers who may not be familiar with the traffic volume before/after school.

Parents———PLEASE use the drop-off loop off Seventh Street. Do not use the side streets to drop-off your student to walk across Seventh Street towards the school.

#1—— It is posted NO stopping, standing or parking during drop-off and pick-up times.

#2—— It is safer to get closer to the building. As we get closer to the start of the year it will be staying darker later, which means it will be harder to see students as they cross the street.

PLEASE NOTE—— For the traffic on Seventh Street and those trying to turn left from Washington St. onto Seventh Street, PLEASE try to alternate. Unless, of course, there are cars leaving the school preventing vehicles waiting to turn left from Washington onto Seventh Street. Although there is no stop sign on Seventh Street at Washington, the traffic on Seventh usually stops to let someone in. This keeps things from backing up too much on any one street at any point in time.

Please do NOT use the rear of the school or the BCPA Lot to drop-off —— This area will be blocked off with cones preventing cars from entering the drop-off line. Also, there is NOT a turnaround option in this lot. There are so many students and staff coming into and leaving the lot it creates an added hazard to all. The goal is to maintain ONE direction traffic into these lots as much as possible in an attempt to avoid any traffic collisions.

Every year, we hear about the traffic congestion in the morning and afternoon. PLEASE understand with 2000 plus students and staff packed into this building there is a lot of traffic around the school. We do the best we can to keep things moving as quickly as possible while still keeping all of our students and staff as safe as possible. If you are looking to avoid the congestion, here are a few things to look at:

#1—— Have your students ride the bus or car pool

#2—— Pull all the way up to the end of the sidewalk in front of BHS. This will maximize the amount of cars that can drop-off at one time (especially since all three doors on the front side of BHS are open for student entry each morning).

#3—— Plan to get to the high school before 7:10 am. If you get your student up and are arriving at BHS before 7:10 am, you can usually just drop-off and continue on your way without getting caught in a long line up.

For Pick-Up——— Make sure when you are lining up waiting to ONLY utilize the lane CLOSEST to BHS. The LEFT lane MUST be left OPEN for drive -thru traffic! Also, as the pick-up gets longer out to the road and down Seventh Street, you can park in the front parking lot and wait for your student there as well.

Pink Week Information - Pink Week Shirts and Sponsorship Opportunities

Pink Week Shirts

  • As many of you know who have experienced it, Pink Week is one of the best weeks of the year at BHS! Our entire school and the Brighton community come together through both school and community-wide events to raise money for the Trinity Health Cancer Center in Brighton. More information will be coming out as the week gets closer. We appreciate any and all support this week as it is a fantastic opportunity to raise money for a great cause and to keep funds local! We also have shirts available for purchase via the BHS school store, The Paw.

  • Online orders begin on 8/1/25 and will run through 9/14/25. Orders will be available for pick up at BHS at The Paw (or delivery to BAS employees) starting on 9/22/25. As always, 100% of proceeds generated by The Paw from Pink Week items will go toward BAS' donation to the Trinity Health Cancer Center in Brighton.

Pink Week Sponsorship Opportunities

  • In addition to participating in BHS' Pink Week events, we are also offering businesses the opportunity to serve as Pink Week Sponsors or make donations to our Pink Week Raffle. If you or someone you know may be interested in participating in either of these opportunities to support a great cause, feel free to share our Pink Week Sponsorship and Donation Flyer.

Senior Questionnaire - Class of 2026

If you attended the Future Senior Parent Meeting, you learned more about the Senior Questionnaire. Many scholarships, college applications, etc., require letters of recommendation to be submitted in order to be considered. This document is extremely helpful for anyone you may be asking for a letter of recommendation (teachers, grade level principal, counselor, coaches, employers, etc.) and will go a long way in helping ensure the letter of recommendation you receive is a quality on. A few reminders are listed below:

  • When you submit your Senior Questionnaire, it will generate an email with your responses included. We would recommend printing this and providing a copy to anyone you are asking to write a letter for you.
  • If you are going to be asking for letters of recommendation, ask early, well before the deadline. Many of the people you will be asking will have many letters to write, so advance notice in requesting, and patience afterward is much appreciated.
  • You are unable to submit applications via College Board prior to August 1st. Take your time in completing your Senior Questionnaire and be sure to provide as much information within each category/question as you can to aid your recommenders.

Class of 2026 Remind Codes - Students Only

In addition to our various social media accounts, one of the ways in which we share important information with the Senior class is through the use of the Remind App. We will share the same information with parents via weekly emails, however, students seem to do a better job receiving the information through Remind. Please help us by encouraging your student(s) to join the correct Remind group using the join codes below (alphabetical by last name):

Last Name A - E: @bhssr26a-e

Last Name F - L: @bhssr26f-l

District Nurse Beginning of School Year Checklist

Please see the message below from our District Nurse and BHS Medical Staff:

Renew Documentation for the 25/26 School Year Over the Summer:

It is district policy that all medical forms and documentation be updated at the start of a new school year or when a treatment plan changes. This includes medication forms and medical or emergency action plans. We recommend taking care of this over the summer when you see a clinician for a sports physical or other! Documents available here.

Update Vaccinations Prior to the Start of the 25/26 School Year:

New students, JK/K students, and incoming 7th grade students must be up to date with State of Michigan Vaccine requirements here or for public school attendance. This needs to be addressed before the first day of school. We recommend contacting your child's primary care provider now to ensure you get an appointment over the summer. Read more about vaccine requirements/waivers

and scheduling here.

If you have any questions or need assistance preparing for the 25/26 school year, please contact your building's medical staff member or the District Nurse. Thank you!

Information from Michigan State Admissions

Mr. Grabowski and Mr. Miner shared information earlier this week directly from Michigan State University. In case you missed this information, it is provided below:

Please see below for some great information on processes & what to expect applying to Michigan State University. This information applies to both the Class of 2026 & Class of 2027. Please reach out with any individual questions or concerns!

Michigan State University Admissions Information — Class of 2026 & 2027 Applicants

Test Scores

  • MSU is test optional through at least 2027.

  • If a student has an average GPA and an SAT score below 1100, they should choose NOT to have test scores considered in their application.

  • Going test optional will not hurt a student’s chances for:

    • Admission

    • Scholarships

    • Honors College consideration

  • If a student says they want scores considered and submits a low score, MSU must factor it in — even if the scores were sent automatically from College Board.

  • If a students elects NOT to have scores considered, MSU cannot consider them even if they've already been sent in or are on the transcript.

  • For high-achieving students (top 5% of their class with a rigorous course load): only submit an SAT score if it is 1400 or higher to stay competitive for Honors College consideration.

Early Action vs. Regular Admission

  • Apply Early Action (non-binding) by November 1 for:

    • A guaranteed decision by January 15

    • Full consideration for scholarships

  • Regular Admission applications are guaranteed a decision by March 31 — but review doesn’t begin until after all Early Action files are processed. This delays decisions and may reduce scholarship opportunities.

Application Fee

  • The application fee is $75 for this year.

Free Application Week

  • From October 1–10, 2026, students can apply for free by using the waiver code: Spartan1855.

  • MSU will email this code to students already in their system.

  • No refunds are available for students who apply before October 1 and pay the fee.

  • No advantage to applying before the free week — but don’t wait until the last minute. Applying closer to October 1 (instead of October 10) ensures faster processing ahead of the November 1 deadline.

  • Traditional fee waiver questions will still appear for those who qualify.
