Our first author featured, Richard Toews, shares this with us about his virtual book launch in March 2021:
"... the Mennonite Heritage Museum in Abbotsford, BC, honoured me by hosting a book launch for my novel “The Confession.” While this was, for me, an important event, the book launch took place in the midst of the COVID pandemic. As a result, the Museum, rightly so, took precautions by hosting an on-line book launch. Now, anyone who has had a similar experience will know of the downside of an on-line book launch. That which makes a book launch successful is the live, in-person connection. There is nothing quite like meeting an author face to face and discuss the novel. I am now more than excited to announce that on April, 27th at 1 pm, the Mennonite Heritage Museum in Abbotsford has agreed to giving me, what amounts to as a second chance to meet individuals who would like to know more about my novel, “The Confession.” On April 27th, the Museum is hosting me in their “Buns And Borscht” event. I will be doing a reading from my novel after which I will respond to questions about why I wrote the novel, and its relevance to our contemporary understanding of what it means to resist the temptation to use power in ways that dehumanize the Other."
Peter Andres hosts this series, not to be missed. Be sure to register today!

REVIEWS OF A SWORD SHALL PIERCE YOUR SOUL by Lorne Brandt
FriesenPress (publisher) editor:
"A work of historical fiction grounded in the gospel accounts of the life and times
of Jesus, The Story of Mary explores the experiences and emotions of the young
woman who became the mother of the Saviour. From her betrothal to Joseph to
her conversations with her resurrected so, the narrative will spark the reader's
imagination and provide a glimpse into what might have happened two
thousand years ago."
"Based on the biblical account of Mary, mother of Jesus, A Sword Shall Pierce
Your Soul takes readers back to first-century Israel, where they meet a young
woman whose "Yes" to God heralded the first notes of the gospel. From her
engagement to Joseph to her conversations conversations with her resurrected
son, Mary was a faithful constant in the life of Jesus."
"You are a strong communicator and capable storyteller. Your biblical knowledge
and creative imagination have combined to craft a truly inspiring story. You have
completed excellent work so far. Overall, your writing style is excellent. You also
highlight Mary’s humanity by focusing on her emotions. We often don’t think
about how overwhelming these events would have been for the young couple,
so your realistic speculations help readers to relate to this ancient story."
Ray Friesen, retired pastor and author of Jump into the Story and
Wandering the Wilderness:
"Lorne Brandt has crafted a “cast of characters" most biblical and some fictional,
who carry the story and display the humanity of those who walked with God
Himself. A moving read for audiences of all ages, The Story of Mary will inspire
many to say “yes” in obedience to God’s call -“...the original Storytellers and
Editors had to use their words carefully...[for] ...the story to be there and feel
real...they had to keep it brief and trust the readers and hearers to use their
imaginations to jump into the stories and have them come alive. Lorne Brandt's
book is one example of such... He both pulls you into the story and invites you
to engage your own imagination to bring it to life. For those whose commitment
to Holy Scripture makes them uneasy with such imaginings, Lorne fills in the
spaces without significant changes to the original versions. For those who are
comfortable with going further afield, Lorne extends both the invitation and
permission to do so. Read and find yourself in Mary's company."
Peace Mennonite Church e-bulletin:
"We are celebrating with Lorne on the publication of his novel "A Sword Shall
Pierce Your Soul," an imaginative and biblically-inspired glimpse into the life of
Mary."
Sue Nickel, author of Held:
"A mystery? A fictional account of the Jesus story? Lorne Brandt has
accomplished both in this novel, applying his psychiatric background to create a
real drama. One reviewer wrote: “My 90 year old mother just finished reading
Lorne Brandt’s “A Sword Shall Pierce Your Soul” and was ecstatic that there
was “ finally someone who wrote a book on Mary... and so well-written, too!” [It]
“grabs you right at the beginning and keeps you reading well into the night.” -
Various readers:
"This novel brings to life the story of Mary, mother of Jesus, and the events
throughout Jesus' lifetime. It gives the reader a glimpse into their lives in a time
that is so different from the present."
"This moving story is accessible to a wide audience: sentences flow along easily,
at a reading level that is appropriate for older children and adults.
I loved it. At first, I wondered how you would know what the dialogue would be,
but it becomes clear what conversations would have taken place. The book
really brings to life the story of Jesus, his family and his work."
"You probably know this already: the book is very readable: the sentences flow
easily along. The ending, that the sword is a vehicle of truth and freedom, is just
wonderful."
"Thank you for bringing this publication to our attention. It was so enriching to
read this, especially during this past month when there has been such disarray
around us (in American politics)."
"It is a real heart warming story and a great way to learn about the life of Jesus
from Mary’s perspective. Although much of the story was familiar I found your
clear chronological presentation a great way to put all of the pieces together in a
meaningful way. It also prompted me to google map the location and distances
between the towns."
"Friends, you will not regret acquiring this book for your library. I have done two
reads and will do a third in the Season that will be upon us soon.
As historical fiction, this book captures the cultural norms, mores, and the strict
following of Torah of the ancient Israelites, paying special homage to his mother
-- her faith, wisdom, trustworthiness and courage. I was delighted to get to
know Mary as a woman, a mother, and an obedient, brave follower of Yahweh.
Lorne has captured the ancient world, it's breadth and passions and faithful life.
I highly recommend this very accessible and colourful novel."
