Principal's Update
Talofa lava,
A massive congratulations to Toby Ireland (Year 13, 2025) who was recently awarded his Hillary Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award at Government House. Achieving a Gold Award requires immense dedication, resilience, and service to the community. We are incredibly proud of Toby for this outstanding achievement - he is a fantastic role model for our students. We look forward to celebrating several more students who are nearing the completion of their Gold Awards soon.
Warmest congratulations also go to Ruth Armishaw for her exceptional leadership of the school choir - Volante. Our 49-strong ensemble delivered a truly breathtaking performance at the Michael Fowler Centre at the Big Sing. The set was cleverly arranged, thoughtfully selected, and delivered with a passion that brought immense pride to our school community.
We firmly believe that education is a partnership; it truly takes a village to support our young people in reaching their potential. We are committed to our 'no surprises' policy, striving to keep you well-informed about your child's progress and school life before issues arise. To support this, please keep an eye on these key touchpoints:
Attitude to Learning Grades: These are our primary tool for regular updates regarding your child's daily progress and engagement.
Kanohi ki te Kanohi (Face-to-Face): While email updates are valuable, we highly value connecting in person. I hope that you found our recent parent-teacher interviews for Years 11-13 (the first of two days) and learning conversations for Years 9-10 as useful as we did. Thank you for investing your time and energy into these vital discussions.
Last Friday, we held the first of our two Teacher Only Days for the year, hosting 1,000 teachers from eleven Wellington secondary schools. The theme of the day was ‘Success Together’. Matua Marty led our mihi whakatau, and our staff shared two waiata, which sounded and looked impressive.
We were honored to listen to keynote speaker Abbas Nazari, whose inspiring journey—from fleeing the Taliban in Afghanistan as a child to becoming a Fulbright New Zealand scholar at Georgetown University, perfectly set the tone for our conference. Our school supports many migrant and former refugee students, and it is vital to acknowledge the challenges inherent in relocating to a new country. These students must not only acquire English proficiency at a level sufficient to achieve their CAAs and NCEA Levels, but they must also navigate the nuances of the 'Kiwi way of life'—a significant transition for any young learner. I’d like to thank everyone in our community who supports these courageous students, whether through English language learning, sports, clubs, or just good acts of kindness.
Yesterday we enjoyed a day at Whanganui High School for our annual Sports Exchange. Three bus loads headed north and competed in netball, hockey, rugby, basketball and football. Tight competitions all round but Whanganui High School won the trophy off us this year.
Our 100th Centenary Celebrations are getting closer. Here’s a photo of my mum heading north to play Wanganui High School in netball in 1958. I dug this out looking for memorabilia to ‘dress’ the Decade Reunion Rooms. We will have numerous B-Block classrooms set aside for low-key catch ups for our visitors. Mum is the one in the middle holding the team mascot - which I gather she still has somewhere. In the photo is Robyn Broughton (nee Quirke) who went on to coach the Silver Ferns, and the Southern Steel netball team for many years.
We are keen to receive any photos of HVHS from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s that could be added to our archives collection and displayed at the 100th Open Day. Some of our visitors are returning to the Hutt for the first time in 30-40 years, and it would be super to help them walk down memory lane.
Many of you will have connections with HVHS, whether you were a former student, or your friends and family were. Please feel free to pass this information on to them! We have planned a wonderful day on Saturday, 8 August, the school will be open, with dancing, acting, music, and sport, along with tours, decade photos, morning and afternoon tea, and loads of alumni displays (special shout out to Judith Gardiner, our Archivist and all our volunteers).
For the latest information on the 100th Open Day including the event programme, and the many alumni organised catch-ups and reunions - visit our dedicated website page by clicking here. On this page you'll also find the booking form for 100th Open Day events that have limited seating and require bookings. These events are Principal's Welcome/ Mihi Whakatau, Staff & Board Members Reunion, and the Special Early Dinner for Alumni from the 1940s & 1950s (now fully booked).
And finally, congratulations to Myumi Peiris (13JDPN) and Minara Dadallagei (13WL) who were recently recognised at the Voice of Aroha Ethnic Youth Awards Ceremony at Bishop Viard College. Myumi received a leadership award and Minara's award was for her academic achievements.
Fa'afetai tele,
Denise Johnson (Principal)
HVHS Relay for Life Team Fundraises Over $23,000!
A huge thank you from our Service Leaders, Hugh McWhinnie (13JDPN) and Izzy Fogarty (13JDPN) to all students who participated in the 2026 HVHS Relay for Life team, the many teachers who contributed with their amazing efforts in volunteering at the weekend event and our school community for over $23,000 in donations for the Cancer Society.
A few stats from the Relay for Life event: the HVHS Team walked 404 laps around the course at Hnry Stadium, with the fastest lap time clocking in at a speedy 1:10, and the most leisurely, probably in the early hours last Saturday, coming in at 49:45! A special shout-out goes to our top three HVHS fundraisers: Scarlett de Ronde (10GIMI) with $2,267, Leah Fiddes (10WMCE) with $2,041, and Jake Roberts (11TU) with $2,001.
The fundraising will continue with a Non-Uniform Day scheduled on Friday, 19 June. All gold coin donations from this event will also be donated to the HVHS Relay for Life total.

At the market we'll have 28 student businesses selling a variety of products. We've got something for everyone! Options include:

- Looking for an experience to remember? Try the brand new card game 'Survive 'til Sunrise', get a hole-in-one, design your own slime, capture a moment in time with your friends, or get your nails done.
Check out the posters below for more info. We looking forward to seeing you there!
1st and 2nd Place at Techweek's Hackathon!
At last Friday’s Techweek Hackathon 2026, hosted by Deloitte, student teams had just four hours to use AI to "vibe code" a website and pitch a solution for a societal issue to a panel of judges. Winning first and second place at the Hackathon were two HVHS teams!
First Place + $1,500 for HVHS:
UniSwipe Team (pictured below, left to right): Sophie Papps (13KG), Nicholas Walcott (13MAHI), Siân Roberts (13TOBZ), Luisa Narvaez Benavides (13KG), Matilda Hall (13DBME), and Riley Green (13SHGA).
UniSwipe's Project: Addressed the overwhelming amount of information students receive about University degrees and halls. Their idea was a swipe-style quiz that helped students make a decision about a degree that would match them best.
Second Place:
SafeSpace Team: Vinuki Abeyrathna (13WNDO), George Leask (12VY), Iqra Saleem (13OH), Tamika Dwarika (13KG), Conor Jackson (13KG), and William Todd (13TW).
SafeSpace's Project: A website designed to act as an intermediary to direct students, particularly LGBTQIA+, to find counselling support when needed.
Product Design Classroom Activity
- By Hazel White (Technology Teacher)
What happens when you hand a preschooler's wildest monster drawing to a product design student? This term, our Year 9 Product Design Mixed Materials (PTMM) class put this to the test.
Partnering with Lower Hutt City Childcare and our own Tautoko - Supported Learning Centre, our students used their original monster artworks as the blueprints to manufacture customised soft toys. Acting as product designers, our students worked to meet their real-life stakeholder’s briefs. This required problem-solving skills to interpret abstract artworks and translate their ideas into feasible, safe, and fit-for-purpose outcomes.
Students used Adobe Illustrator to design and laser-cut custom buttons that matched the specific features and colors of the original artworks, before using hand-sewing skills to assemble the finished monsters. I love how we get to learn many new things while being able to create things for other people at the same time" - Adaira.
The highlight of the project for the students was gifting the finished monsters back to their original artists. “I think the most rewarding part was giving Annabelle her toy and watching her hug it until she left” - Erin. “The most fun or rewarding part of this whole experience was giving it back to my SLC student as I loved seeing their reaction and how happy they were” - Molly.
Ultimately, the project delivered far more than just an introduction to design and manufacturing. It allowed our students to practice empathy, demonstrating how technical skills can be used to achieve purposeful, community-minded outcomes. A huge thank you to Lower Hutt City Childcare and Tautoko students for sharing their creativity with us. We couldn't have done it without your monsters!
Friendly Reminder: Free Period Products for Students (Includes School Holidays)
Students can help themselves to free period products. We also encourage students to take products home for the school holidays and during exam leave to cover their full menstrual cycle, and so families can skip adding them to the family grocery list!
Students are welcome to help themselves to period products, they are located in the tall white cupboard in the hallway between the Student Counter and the First Aid Room (Sick Bay). In the cupboard, students can select from pads and tampons in sizes regular and super, and also liners.
Congratulations to our latest Duke of Edinburgh Award Recipients!

New Club for Filipino Students - Tala Filipino Club!
The Tala Filipino Club is a student-led forum for Filipino students (migrant and New Zealand-born) to celebrate and share their culture and journey together. As scattered stars across the sky to guide travellers in the dark, ‘Tala’ represents bright, beautiful stars helping people navigate different experiences and stories, especially when they feel unfamiliar or challenging.
We will build cultural pride and identity through enjoying special cultural days (Filipino Independence Day / Language Week), contributing to our school and local multicultural events with stalls and performances, sharing Filipino language, food, music, and traditions, and creating connections with other Filipinos and Kiwis to play, learn, and study together.
The club meets every second Wednesday at lunchtime, usually in the pavilion. Any changes will be shared via the Google Classroom created specially for Tala Filipino. For any questions, please email Victoria Mitchell at victoria.mitchell@hvhs.school.nz.
Student Snapshots from the Art of Seeing Academy!
- By Victoria Mitchell (English Language Teacher)
Earlier this year we were approached by locally esteemed photographer Ana Lyubich, founder of the charitable organisation The Art of Seeing Academy, inviting English language learners at HVHS to participate in a weekly photographic learning experience. Ten places were quickly filled by selected invitation, providing these students an opportunity to visually communicate their personal journey while becoming competent with DSLR cameras and photographic principles such as lighting, contrast, shape, colour, texture, and abstraction.
Meeting for an hour on alternating Mondays and Wednesdays over this term, students have collated portfolios from which they will select images to exhibit in Week 11 as an expression of their personal journey and experiences as a migrant to Aotearoa New Zealand. This will be open to students and the community. Details will be available soon, and you are warmly invited to view this inaugural event showcasing a visual expression of their personal sense of identity as a young person finding their way in a new place.
Please read some of their personal reflections below and enjoy a small collection of their photos. It has been a privilege to offer this, and to witness the students' constructive engagement and sense of wonder and pride during the process. We are very grateful to both Ana and her co-tutor Zhanna Yasinetskaya for their skill, knowledge, encouragement, and intentional, aspirational approach with our students.
Student Reflections
I enjoyed learning photography because it was fun and creative for me. I learned how to use different camera settings and take good photos. I improved a lot by getting help from teachers. Overall I enjoyed it a lot. - Ehsan Hassani (11SA)
I’ve learned so much through photography, especially how to look at things from a new angle. It helped me notice small things I never really paid attention to before, like how light can change the mood of a photo or how different colours can make something look different. Photography has taught me that you don’t just take a quick photo. you actually create something with your own ideas and the way you see things. It’s been a really cool experience learning how to put my ideas into my photos. - Sharmilla Tamang (11GS)
Below (left to right): Photo 1 (Eshan) and photos 2 & 3 (Sharmilla)
I have learned how to take better photos and use different camera settings. I also learned about lighting, angles, and how to make photos look more interesting. The cool thing about the program was learning new photography skills and being creative with my photo. - Karina Rawat (11MR)
This course was meant for me! I don't know how I feel, except I feel proud. I think I was lucky to be on this course. Every time I have photography I think that I will take the best photos, and now that did happen. I am really excited to know this. In my PTEC class I saw my photos on the board. I was freaking out, then I knew that the teachers liked them. - Pirakash Sakthy (10WSLN)

Become a Homestay Family for HVHS, Shorter Hosting Options Available!
We are always looking for new host families to help with hosting international student attending HVHS. We have a large number of one-term students from Japan and Brazil arriving for Term 3.
If you are considering having an international student in your home, then this is a great way to find out if hosting works for your family and if you would like to host long term.
What's Required?
If your family:
Can provide a welcoming and supportive environment,
Has a spare bedroom available, and
Lives in-zone (preferred).
We encourage you to consider becoming a homestay family. Homestay families receive $350 per week, and it is a wonderful opportunity to learn about diverse traditions, cultures, and languages while supporting a young person during their time in Aotearoa.
For more information or to express your interest, please email our Homestay Coordinator, Anna Kingsford, at anna.kingsford@hvhs.school.nz, and include a short bio about your family and a contact phone number.
Key Dates for 2027 Enrolment Applications
Enrolments for 2027 are now open for in-zone and out-of-zone applications. All enrolments are completed online. We encourage families to enrol their child early. This helps us to plan for your student’s learning needs and ensures that your student will be in the first group to receive the email with subject selections (many subjects have limited spaces). For information on how to enrol and key enrolment deadlines please click here.
Kai Donations to Support Our Students
At HVHS we want every student to have the opportunity to learn and thrive. One of the ways we support this is by making sure students who arrive without breakfast or enough food for the day can access kai when they need it.
If you’re able to help, we are currently seeking donations of sandwich spreads, muesli bars and Up & Go breakfast drinks. Donations can be dropped directly to the School Office during term time, Monday to Friday, 8am–4pm. For any questions, you’re also welcome to email Claire Ross (Head of Wellbeing) at claire.ross@hvhs.school.nz. Ka nui te mihi.
Let Us Know About Your Student's Recent Achievements!
Has your child achieved something amazing? We’d love to hear about and celebrate our students’ successes outside the classroom — whether in sport, music, speech, dance, or other activities.
If your child has a sporting achievement, please email the details to Kristi Tia (Sports Director) at sport@hvhs.school.nz. For all other achievements, contact Lana Goddard (Principal’s PA) at office@hvhs.school.nz.
