The B.Y.E. Buzz
Bernice Young Elementary School Sept 22, 2025
Next week students will be working on their first monthly STEAM project for this school year. Be sure to ask them about it. Our focus for STEAM this year is Conservation--how to conserve the resources we have and enjoy the resources that our area has to offer. One guiding question we have is "What makes the Natural State...natural?" *For our new families, Young Elementary is an Arkansas STEM Designation school. We incorporate STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) into our core curriculum to engage learners and encourage problem solving skills.
3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will take the ATLAS interim tests Monday, 9/29 through Friday, 10/3. We will start first thing in the morning! You will get information about ATLAS screeners, interims, and summatives during conferences in October.
Individual Fall Picture Day is October 7th. Paper copies will go home on Monday but the online ordering code is below. If you have questions, please reach out to the office!
Did you know?
If your child comes in after the 7:45 bell, they need to be signed in. To make it easy, parents can utilize our check-in/check-out QR code that is in the front two parking spaces OR hanging by the front door to sign in the child. After you have completed the digital form, please watch your child(ren) and make sure they get inside before pulling away. If you don't have a phone, feel free to come inside and use a paper copy to check them. If teachers mark them absent, the office will use these forms to change the absence to a tardy.

Helping your Child Calm Down with Coping Skills- From Mrs. Nelson
During this month's counseling lessons I will be discussing coping skills and how to use them when you get upset. Calming down and managing big emotions is hard! Practicing how to calm down when we are upset is an important life skill. Now is a great time to start introducing coping skills to your children at home. Here are some things you can say to your child when they are upset.
Words you can use when your child is upset: (say in a calm, low voice at your child’s level)
I see that you are upset and you feel (label their emotion).
It’s okay to be (label their emotion).
I love you. Do you need a hug?
Can I help you? Could we try (offer solutions to the child and help them try them)?
It’s not okay to (say the physical action they are doing that is dangerous). Can we try (offer a solution) instead…
I’ll be over here when you are ready. (Give them space but stay close)
