Message to Families / Mensaje a las familias

Estimadas familias,

Atentamente,

John Melvin

Dear Families,

I hope you all are doing well and enjoying this pleasant early spring sunny weather. We certainly had a great end of our week as this afternoon we enjoyed the upbeat, joyful drumming of Ghanaian Drummer Alex Addy and his group “Waashee-Shee-Jay”. Alex and his group visited us in honor of Black History Month and led two performances of inspirational drumming and dancing to all of our students and staff. Also, our former SUN School Manager (and current member of the BRAVO music staff) Cinda Jackson, delivered a moving rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” (The Black National Anthem) before each performance. We were fortunate to have a warm, sunny afternoon and it was great to gather together in an assembly for the first time in almost two years. Students and staff both participated in dancing along to the groovy rhythms!

Next week we are looking forward to concluding our Black History Month celebration on Thursday, February 24 @ 6pm. The event will be held virtually on Zoom and will feature messages from our students, families and staff regarding different ways we have honored Black History Month (please see the meeting info in our calendar below). We hope you will be able to join us.

Finally, as we are nearing the close of Black History Month, I want to reiterate that at James John we are a school committed to being an safe space for students and adults in all aspects (physical, emotional, social) and are a school where racism, discrimination and all forms of hate are not accepted. This past week, during one of our classes, two students used a homophobic slur towards each other when they were a conflict in a whole group setting. These slurs were heard by the whole class including adult staff members. We take such incidents seriously and we addressed the incident with the offenders, their families and their classmates. We also use such incidents to inform our ongoing lessons and curriculum regarding all forms of hate speech and oppression. We know that we have a long way to go in creating a world that is free of discrimination and oppression, but we will continue to work to make James John a safe and thriving environment for all. I hope you all enjoy a great weekend.

Sincerely,

John Melvin

Planned changes to covid-19 Protocols in light of declining covid-19 case numbers

Dear PPS Families,

As the COVID-19 pandemic moves into its next phase, we are preparing to make changes to our safety protocols in response to declining cases.

With case numbers that had peaked in Multnomah County because of the Omicron variant now projected to decline even further in the coming weeks and months, and with the high percentage of vaccinated individuals in Multnomah County, we expect shifts in guidance from public health experts.

Because of that, we are planning to make the following changes starting on March 1:

  • Outdoor masking on campuses will become optional.
  • School dances and other in-person school events may resume.
  • Civic Use of Building permits – which allow for use of school buildings by community groups and individuals during non-school hours -- may be approved for indoor use (the CUB office will begin accepting permits for review on February 15).
  • Overnight field trips may resume.

All changes are in alignment with the statewide Ready School Safe Learners guidelines for the 2021-22 school year (updated February 9). Our full slate of Standard Operating Procedures is collected on the 2021-22 COVID-19 Safety and Protocols webpage.

Thank you for everything you are doing to keep our students and community safe.
