Homecoming Details

As most of you know, next week will be the start of all things Slater Homecoming. With that being said, we’re here to remind you of everything you need to know!

  • On Monday we will start up our dress up days with ‘The lazy song’ wearing your Pajamas

  • Tuesday we’re somewhere on the beach with Beach Wear

  • Wednesday we’ll listen to our good friend Iggy Azalea and wear fancy clothing such as a dress or tie

  • Thursday working 9-5, dress as your future career

  • And ending the week with 1 direction, we’ll finish off with the story of our lives wearing PURPLE AND GOLD

Each day teachers will vote for an individual who they believe dressed the best for the theme and win a prize!

On Wednesday, October 4th we will be having our Powder Puff & Homecoming Bonfire.

-The powder puff game will start off at 4:30 at the football field. If you are interested in playing please find Madison P. around the hallways to receive a permission slip. If you have already filled out the permission slip and haven’t turned it into her, please do that as soon as possible.

-For the bonfire it will also be at the football field starting at 7:00pm. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs!

Skipping to Friday we will have our pep assembly at 1:30 followed by the parade. Later that night kickoff starts at 7:00pm at home so come cheer on your wildcats! Coronation will be at halftime.

Following the game the Homecoming dance will take place in the cafeteria around 9:30.

Parading Our Spirit

In case the flyers above didn't make you aware, Homecoming is THIS WEEK!

HS Students will attend the Pep Assembly at 1:30. We will dismiss from the gym for 2:15 Parade Lineup. HS Students will ride in their activity/organization's floats. Students who cannot walk or ride will watch the parade from the school grounds.

HS Students will be released after the completion of the parade. BUS STUDENTS MUST BE READY TO BOARD THE BUSES AT 3:04.

Get Your Dancing Shoes Ready!

The Homecoming Dance will take place 30 minutes after the football game on October 6. (typically 9/9:30 to 11/11:30)

That evening after the game is over, I will send a text alert letting students/adults know when the breezeway doors will be open. Students must be in good standing to attend the dance and may bring a guest that does not attend SHS, as long as that guest is not older than 20 years old, has completed an Out of District Event Form (below), and that form has been approved. Printed forms are available in the HS Office and are due back by noon on Wednesday, October 4. We will send the form to the sending school. If you DON'T hear back from me after submitting the form, all is well and your date is approved. I will contact you if there's an issue.

Dance admission is $3/one person or $5/two people.

More information about Homecoming will be in next week's ROAR.

Handbook Higlight

The Handbook Highlight is a recap of a handbook policy or entry that our Students/Adults need to be aware of. If I'm taking the time to include it, it's something to pay attention to - either because I'm seeing that people aren't clear on it, people aren't complying with it, or I'm about to start cracking down on it. This week's highlights are things that pertain to Homecoming:

ATTENDANCE AT SCHOOL ATHLETICS & ACTIVITIES

All students are encouraged to attend school events. Students must be in attendance on the

day of an activity for at least 4 consecutive periods. Students placed in OSS or students who have failed to serve detention may not attend or participate in a school sponsored event.

DANCES AND SOCIAL EVENTS

1. All Slater High School students and their dates are invited to attend high school dances.

2. Dates must be in the ninth grade or above. Dates that are not members of Slater High School must be registered in advance.

3. All dance attendees must be under the age of 21.

4. Junior – Senior Prom is open to members of the Junior and Senior classes and their dates. Dates that are not members of Slater High School Junior – Senior classes will be charged an admission fee and must be registered in advance.

5. To attend Homecoming/Courtwarming dances, students must have a 90% or beer attendance rate two weeks prior to the event. Students attending Prom must have a 90% or beer attendance rate by February 1 of the current school year to be eligible. Students achieving this prior to the event may be eligible to attend.

DANCES AND SOCIAL EVENTS: Candidate Selection

Royalty selection for Homecoming:

1. All Junior and Senior girls and boys in good standing three weeks prior to Homecoming shall be on the candidate selection ballot.

2. The members of the football team will select three girls to be Homecoming Queen candidates approximately 2 weeks prior to Homecoming. HS Cheerleaders and members of the Softball Team will select three boys to be Homecoming King candidates approximately 2 weeks prior to Homecoming.

3. The entire student body will vote for one girl to be Homecoming Queen and one boy to be Homecoming King by Google Form (sent via school email) in an election held during the week of Homecoming.

What staff member deserves a shout out?

Take a minute to let me know all about it by filling out THIS FORM or clicking the banner above.

Students, Parents, and Staff can give a shout out to any Slater Schools employee! We'll make sure they receive a copy of it and will look for ways to share them with you throughout the year as well.

Let's get to bragging about all the good people around here!

Learning Curve

By now, you know that we have a new Student Information System. :)

We're learning the system and have discovered that some settings were incorrect - especially some attendance codes. As we correct those, we anticipate that parents/guardians will receive alerts regarding their student's attendance. Please be patient with us - we're working to make sure that everything is accurate, and that takes time and edits.

(Thanks for your hard work on this, Ms. Hill, Ms. Wiseman, and Mrs. Allen!)

NWEA Time

HS students will take the Fall Sessions of the NWEA this week. They will take these tests in the areas of Language, Reading, Science, and Math three times a year - in the Fall, Winter, and Spring. We use these results to monitor student growth and to make instructional adjustments. It is important that each student does their best on the test in order to get the most accurate results. Besides that, students can earn an incentive day - read on for more information!

Q: When is the NWEA for Fall?

A: Tuesday, September 19

3/4 hours: Language

5/6 hours: Reading

Wednesday, September 20

1/2 hours: Science

6/7 hours: Math

Q: I attend SCCC. What do I do about testing?

A: You'll start your Language test on Tuesday when you get to SHS. We'll pull you next week for your Science test make up. If you don't finish your Language test on Tuesday, you can complete it later.

Q: What is the Incentive Criteria?

A: 10-12 graders have to meet 3 out of 4 criteria - 9th graders won't have a previous HS RIT score, so they have to meet 2 out of 4 criteria:

  • Be in attendance on the day of the test
  • No outbursts or disruptions
  • Less than 2% rapid guessing
  • RIT score growth (or no loss from previous test)

Q: What is the Fall Incentive Event?

A: I don't know yet. A teacher team is in charge of the planning. If you have ideas, please let me know!

Q: How do we take the NWEA test?

A: It's an online test. Make sure you bring your (charged) Chromebook.

Policy Says...

If you don't feel well, ask your teacher to call our school nurse, Ms. Crystal.

Ms. Crystal will determine if you need to stay at school or go home. If she decides that you need to go home, SHE will call your people and make arrangements for you to leave. (Read: You don't call/text your people - especially before we know you don't feel well.)

Making a List

On September 11, our first Eligibility List will run. This list determines student standing until the next list runs, even if your attendance or grades improve before the next list. Teachers sign off on grades as a confirmation that they are current and correct, and the Building Principals run the attendance report.

Here's what the handbook says about GOOD STANDING:

GOOD STANDING

To be considered a student in good standing, a student must not be in violation of the

attendance policy (attendance must be above 90%), have no outstanding discipline referrals OR appear on the current F list.

In order to participate in extracurricular events including (but not limited to): dances,

field trips, school-sanctioned sports events; a student must be in good standing.

Students in grades 6-12 that are not in good standing will have closed lunch and be required

to sign in daily in the cafeteria, where they will remain for the entire lunch period.

The sign in sheet for closed lunch is on the South wall, below the bulletin board. It is up to the student to sign in and remain in the cafeteria during lunch.Failure to stay in the cafeteria for the whole lunch period or sign in (even if you stayed) will result in a CLOSED LUNCH REFERRAL. Here's what the handbook says about CLOSED LUNCH:

CLOSED LUNCH
Failing to stay or sign in for Closed Lunch

Grades 9-12

1. Warning

2. Friday School

3. 1 day in the Transition Room for each day not signed in

Q: Where can I park?

A: I’m glad you asked!

Some students won reserved parking spots last May (see the table below), thanks to their Student of the Month achievements and Trivia Contest finishes. Those students have earned the right to paint their spots with a design that they choose (and J Clem approves).

If it’s a painted or reserved spot, don’t park there. You’ll be asked to move. If it’s an open spot, it’s first come, first served.

Spots students CAN’T park:

- The Circle Drive

- Teacher Parking (off of Elm Street, in front of the Elementary Building)

- The Cafeteria Lot

- Reserved Staff Parking in Gravel/Bus lot (South end of lot)

If you’re driving to school, you need an SHS parking pass. You can get one from Ms. Wiseman in the HS Office. They are $5/school year.

The Student Handbook has more info about Driving, Parking, and consequences of violating the rules. Check it out at SlaterSchools.net!
