A Message from Mr. Hedges

Good Afternoon, Shamrock Families!

Well, what an odd week it has been with the weather and it sounds like this upcoming weekend could get a little messy as well. Please be careful! Thanks to all of you for helping to make sure your child is coming to school with their warm clothes. We do require snow pants if your child wants to play in the snow. Also, a reminder that we do our best to get students outside as long as the wind chill temperature doesn’t fall below 10 degrees. There are a few times this year where we haven’t been able to get the students out at recess because it has been dangerous due to lack of snow/ice removal.

Recently, I calculated the attendance rate for our first eLearning day. As mentioned earlier, a student’s attendance was based upon the amount of completed eLearning assignments. Here is the breakdown:

O assignments completed: Unexcused Absence

At least one assignment completed: Half-Day

More than half completed: Full Day

Our overall attendance rate for our first eLearning day was 97%. That’s outstanding especially considering this was our first experience with eLearning. Thank you so much for your help and support through this.

A reminder that there is no school on Monday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr... Be careful this weekend!

Kind Regards,

Robert D. Hedges

Principal, Shamrock Springs Elementary School

PTO Movie Nights

This year we’ve got a lot of fun filled movie nights planned for the students, but we can’t make these events happen without your help! Parent volunteers are needed to help ensure organization and ultimately safety so all our kids have a great night watching a movie with their classmates.

We understand for some of you when you drop your kids off with us its “Date Night” and that is one of the awesome benefits of Movie Nights, but please consider volunteering on those nights when your child’s grade isn’t scheduled to attend. You can even bring your little ones to join in on the fun on the night when you volunteer!

2019 Movie Night Lineup

Jan 25 (K & 1st Grade) - The Lego Movie

Mar 22 (2nd & 3rd Grade) - My Neighbor Totoro

May 17 (4th Grade) - 4th Grade Picks!

Volunteer shifts are fun, simple and gratifying and the best part is they only last 3 1/5 hour at the most. As an added bonus this year when you volunteer you will receive 2 free movie tickets to the IMAX Theater at the Indiana State Museum to have a Movie Night of your own.

Sign up for a shift or two at http://tinyurl.com/SSESMovieNight

Thank you for your support of your PTO!

Body Safety Program K-4

As a community, we must take a proactive approach to preventing sexual abuse. Collaboration between educators, parents and guardians, child advocates, the medical community, law enforcement and our communities-at-large can protect our children before abuse ever happens. Indiana Center for the Prevention of Youth Abuse and Suicide (formerly Chaucie’s Place) will be visiting your school soon to participate in this collaborative effort. Our body safety curriculum, Think First & Stay Safe, will be presented to the all students K-4. Providing relevant, balanced and proven prevention strategies to families and children increases awareness and knowledge of how to recognize, interrupt, stop and prevent these crimes. We are offering a parent preview of this curriculum on Monday, February 11th at Shamrock Springs Elementary at 7:00 pm. Parents can also view this parent preview at http://chauciesplace.org/parent-night.

PAWS TO READ AT WWPL

Paws to Read continues to occur at Westfield Washington Public Library from 10:30am to 11:30am, on the second Saturday of each month, even through the winter holiday season. Paws to Read is a great opportunity for kids to practice reading out loud to a friendly dog, in a non-judging atmosphere. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. To register, parents call the WWPL Children’s desk at 317-896-9391.

Nurse's Notes

We have had a stomach bug going around this week. It presents with stomachache, nausea, vomiting, and with or without fever. Staying home for 24-48 hours after the child vomits will help prevent the spread of this virus, along with hand washing and cleaning surfaces with a bleach solution.

Please make sure your student is wearing coats, gloves, and hats to school!
