May is Mental Health Month!
🌿 May is Mental Health Month! Let's Talk About It 🌿
Dear Students, Families, and Staff,
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on the importance of emotional well-being and to remind each other that mental health matters—every day, for everyone.
Just like physical health, our mental health needs care and attention. Whether it’s handling stress, navigating friendships, dealing with anxiety, or simply managing everyday emotions, everyone has mental health—and taking care of it is a strength, not a weakness.
💬 Let’s Break the Stigma
One of our goals this month is to encourage open conversations about mental health. Many people struggle in silence because they feel embarrassed or alone. But mental health challenges are common—and help is always available.
Let’s remind ourselves and each other:
It’s okay to not be okay.
You are not alone.
Asking for help is brave.
🧠 Tips for Supporting Mental Health
Here are some small but powerful habits that can support well-being at school and home:
Stay connected. Talk to friends, family, or a trusted adult when you’re feeling down.
Take breaks. Step away from screens, go for a walk, or do something creative.
Practice mindfulness. Deep breathing, journaling, or meditation can help calm your mind.
Get moving. Physical activity helps improve your mood and reduce stress.
Sleep well. A good night’s sleep supports emotional regulation and focus.
💚 What We’re Doing This Month
Throughout May, our counseling office will be hosting:
A community viewing of ‘Screenagers’ - Monday, May 5 at 6:00 PM in the BHS Auditorium
Mental Health Mondays with morning announcements featuring coping tips and positive affirmations.
🤝 We're Here for You
Remember, your school counselors are here to support you. Whether you want to talk, need resources, or just a quiet space to reset, our door is always open.
Let’s make this month meaningful. Let’s be kind—to ourselves and to one another.
Warmly,
Your School Counseling Team
Important May Update from the School Counseling Team
From May 5–16, school counselors will be proctoring AP Exams and will have very limited availability for student meetings. We appreciate your understanding during this busy testing period. Please also note that the Wellness Room will be closed during lunch hours throughout AP testing. Good luck to all our AP students - you’ve got this!
Wellness Tip: Take Care During Testing!
AP season can be stressful, so don’t forget to take care of yourself. Get plenty of sleep, fuel your body with healthy snacks, and take short breaks to breathe or stretch. A few minutes of mindfulness can go a long way! You've worked hard to get here, believe in yourself and prioritize your well-being!
Teacher Appreciation Week - May 5
Teacher Appreciation Week – Thank You, Teachers!
Teacher Appreciation Week (May 5-9) is a special time to recognize the incredible educators who make a lasting impact on our students’ lives. We are thankful for the dedication, compassion, and hard work our teachers bring to the classroom every day. The Counseling Department invites students and families to join us in celebrating our teachers—whether it’s with a kind note, a heartfelt thank-you, or a simple gesture of appreciation. Let’s show our teachers how much they mean to us!
Military Appreciation Month - Honoring Our Heroes
May is Military Appreciation Month, a time to recognize and honor the brave men and women who serve or have served in our Armed Forces. Here at BHS, we are especially grateful for the sacrifices made by our military families and veterans within our school community. We encourage students to take a moment this month to show appreciation—whether it’s writing a thank-you note, learning more about military careers, or simply saying “thank you” to someone who has served.

This spring over 36,000 students across the State of Connecticut took the SAT. Check out this resource from College Board; Understanding Scores, For Students & Families. Score Reports are now uploaded to the students DocumentLOK and you will receive a text if you signed up to be notified by phone.
