Kindness 101
Steve Hartman and Neil Lahammer encourage everyone to be the 'i' in Kind.
And the i's have it!
"On the Road with Steve Hartman" brought the CBS journalist to Burnside Elementary School on Monday, Jan. 12. He was there to tell Neil Lahammer's grade 3 students and the Kindness Club that their teacher will be the nation's very first Kindness 101 Teacher of the Year.
"Mr. Lahammer is the best teacher," student after student told Hartman in their classrooms, in the hallways and during one-on-one interviews.
Lahammer will receive the award April 17 at Drake University. That same night the school's Character Counts and The Ray Center will honor Hartman with the 2026 Robert D. and Billie Ray Pillar of Character Award.
CBS will broadcast the segment featuring Lahammer sometime in April. Look for more information in the weeks to come. In the meantime, checkout the Kindness 101 videos that Burnside teachers and 100,000 of their peers across the nation use in their classrooms every day.
See more coverage of the day on the Burnside Facebook page.
A CBS film crew records Neil Lahammer while Steve Hartman and Kindness Club members from all seven grade 3 classrooms at Burnside Elementary School listen.

Once upon a time ... a kingdom took shape
Twin Bluff Middle School custodian Tammy Pasch (left) lends a hand as students, parents and volunteers assemble the set for "Once Upon a Mattress." High school actors will stage the musical Jan. 22-25 at the Sheldon Theatre. Get your tickets now.
High school musical opens Thursday
Queen Aggravain decrees that no couples may marry until her son, Prince Dauntless, finds a bride. Princesses come from far and wide to win his hand, but none passes the Queen's impossible tests. Then one day a “shy” swamp princess, Winnifred the Woebegone, shows up.
Cross your fingers that she can pass a sensitivity test. Join the applause as the RWHS Theater Department presents "Once Upon A Mattress" at the Sheldon Theatre Jan. 22-25. The musical is hilarious version of "The Princess and the Pea."

Colvill Family Center
Have you signed up your child for screening?
Early childhood screening provides the best opportunity for any health or developmental concerns to be found early. The sooner a child gets screened, the quicker early intervention can occur to help the child get on track.
Screening is required for entrance in Minnesota’s public schools and must take place between age 3 and kindergarten. While you may think fall 2026 is far away, kindergarten registration starts in February.
Please call 651-385-8000 to sign up for a screening date/time for your child. Screening is offered monthly at Colvill Family Center throughout the school year. Dates are:
- Jan. 22
- Feb. 5 & 19
- March 12
- April 9 and 23
- May 14
Screening is a quick, no-cost check of a child's vision and hearing, height and weight, immunization record and a review of health care coverage. Screeners also look for risk factors that may impact learning, such as use of large and small muscles, thinking, language and speaking skills. The screening includes a parent/guardian report of social-emotional development and a summary meeting.
