Welcome to FHU Middle School!
June 2024 - Newsletter for CURRENT 6th Grade Families
Principal's Note
Dear 6th Grade Families,
As you become acclimated to the Middle School, there will be so many new faces! Some folks are 'just middle school' and some are 'shared staff' meaning they teach middle school classes and high school classes throughout the day. Some teachers within the middle school are specific to Grade 7 or Grade 8 and some teach both grades. For all of those reasons, it can be confusing. We will help you sort it out. Promise.
There are some supplies that the 7th-grade team is asking students to have (see photo to the right). We believe that a part of middle school education is teaching and supporting the further development of executive functioning skills such as organization, time management, and planning/prioritization. These tools will support that work. We will provide assignment books to all students in the fall.
The faces below are NOT all of the faces but they are the ones you are most likely to hear from or about next year when your child is in 7th grade. We are sharing these knowing that things may shift as we adjust to meet student needs, which can change throughout the summer and into the school year.
While I will be taking some vacation time at the end of this school year, I will be back at work as of July 8th. I am happy to respond to any questions you may have via email, phone, or meet in person. The move from an elementary school to a larger middle/high school can be intimidating. We have taken some steps to ease the worries that come with this move. Myself, Kim Ezzo, our MS Guidance Counselor, and two of our 7th-grade teachers visited 6th-grade students at their buildings at the end of May. Additionally, we welcomed our soon-to-be 7th-grade students here at FHUMHS on June 5th. They had the opportunity to see the space, meet more of their teachers, and get a taste of what Middle School will be like. You'll note below in the list of dates that Wednesday, August 28th is the first regularly scheduled student day of the new school year. This school day will be for students going into Grades 7 & 9 only. Then, Thursday, August 29th, we will welcome all students. This additional day will provide one more opportunity for our new 7th-grade students to get settled in.
Again, please reach out at any point with any questions or wonders you may have.

G.A.P. - Grant Funded Summer Opportunity
We do have one opportunity we can offer this summer through grant funds. It is the week-long Great Adventure Project. This is not typically offered to incoming 7th-grade students. However, there are a few spots left and we would love to fill them up. See the flyer below and if your 6th (soon to be 7th) grade student is interested, please reach out to Archie Clark at aclark@svuvt.org.
2024-2025 Marching Band
This is a reminder that marching band sign ups for 2024-2025 are OPEN! Sign ups will close on July 1st! Go to: https://forms.gle/ciXuRxw4p5qBJ1kHA. If you have questions, please reach out to Samantha Adams at sadams@svuvt.org.
Athletic Director Eric Ramey & 2024-2025 Sports Registration
We are excited to welcome Eric Ramey back as our 5-12 Slate Valley Athletic Director for the coming year! 2024-2025 Sports Registration on Formreleaf.com is open for Fall 2024, Winter 2024-2025 and Spring 2025 athletics for grades 7-12. We remind you that athletes MUST have an up-to-date physical form on file. Slate Valley School District recommends a yearly check-up, but the VPA rules are every two years. Please sign up early!
