Info and thoughts for Class of 2020

SBHS CounselingNewsletterInfo and thoughts for Class of 2020

This is not what we planned for, so now what.....

As we head into April break, I have heard from many of you who are asking "what will I do over break with no school work?" You've watched all of Netflix, cleaned your room for the first time in three years, baked a few dozen cookies, watched too many hours of Tik Tok videos, walked, run, exercised, so now what? Well first, keep doing some of those things, but unplug from school, maybe try something new we've included here and spend some time considering what comes next. To that end, we have put together a variety of info and resources in one place so spend some time here and come back as needed. You are worth it.

Information from Colleges

Just as many SBHS seniors started to receive admissions decisions and make plans for accepted student days, campuses across the country closed. This chain of events has left many seniors feeling uncertain about their future. As the graphic above indicates, just over half of four-year colleges have extended their deposit deadline to June 1 and most have created virtual experiences meant to help seniors make the most well-informed decisions they can. College admissions and financial aid counselors are available to answer your questions, consider changes to your FAFSA and provide direction to your possible requests for admissions deferrals. To that end, most colleges will honor requests to defer admission for one year but you should make sure to consider this carefully as once it is requested students are not able to change this decision. As always reach out to your school counselor for help sorting through decisions.

Scholarships

There are many scholarship applications sill open. Please check out our list of local scholarships here

Every year SBHS has the opportunity to award a variety of local scholarships. We have scholarships for all types of students with all types of plans after high school (4-year college, 2-year college, professional training program, work). We would encourage every senior to complete the survey... you've got to be in it to win it! Here is the link....

Academic and Career Planning

We are still a resource for students! If you are a senior who is unsure of a plan for after high school, please reach out to us. We are here for any student to discuss opportunities, college and/or career preparation, or any other questions you may have. Now is a great time to do some exploring and find ideas for your future!

Another great resource

Finally here is a link to my favorite college admission blog written by Admissions Counselors at GeorgiaTech. Whether you are struggling to find a reason to persevere this year, make a decision about next year or find meaning, in all of this check out this blog for a little inspiration.
