Attendance and Absences

DCPS is transitioning to a new system for tracking excused absences. Starting September 8th, parents and caregivers must submit excuse notes for attendance through Aspen GO—a mobile friendly version of Aspen Parent Portal, and the same platform used for school enrollment and reenrollment. Please visit the DCPS Attendance webpage for guidance on how to submit an excuse note.

Progress Reports and WS Cutoffs

As we approach the midpoint of the first quarter, the deadline for any missing work from the first half of the quarter is right around the corner! Any missing work (WS in the gradebook) must be turned in to the teachers by Thursday, September 25th.

If your student has turned in their work but Aspen is still displaying a WS, this means that the teacher has not updated the grade yet. This will happen as soon as possible, but please be patient as we each have 100+ students over multiple assignments.

English and Language Arts with Mr. Winston

Thank you to all the families who joined us for Back-to-School night! Meeting you all in person was a highlight of my week. I am also quite proud of our scholars’ performance on Thursday’s vocabulary quiz—their hard work studying terms from the unit really showed.

Next Monday, we will complete a skills assessment for Unit One. Students will read a passage and respond to both multiple choice and short-answer questions focusing on characterization, point of view, and character development. No preparation outside of class is required— just a good night’s sleep and a positive mindset! We will spend the rest of the week reading “The Medicine Bag” by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve, learning about figurative language, and refining our writing skills.

As always, please encourage your scholars to read for at least 20 minutes each night.

Lastly, we will have our first Summative Assessment on Monday, September 22nd. Students will read a passage to answer multiple choice questions and a long response question.

In the meantime, please continue encouraging your students to read for at least 20 minutes a night.

World Geography and Cultures with Ms. Wesselhoft

It was a pleasure meeting all who attended the Back to School Night! We had a great week practicing and reviewing our map skills and vocabulary. We ended it with their first summative assessment, Summ A: Unit 1 Map Skills Test.

Next week we will pivot into the theme of the unit, how can we use maps to improve our community? The week should look as follows (hopefully):

  • Monday – DC Atlas Scavenger Hunt

  • Tuesday and Wednesday – DC Map Investigation

  • Thursday and Friday – Community Profile practice and assigning for homework

By the following Monday, hopefully students will have identified something they would like to improve within their communities.

Math with Mx. Gomez

Thank you for joining us at Back to School Night, it was a pleasure meeting family of our lovely mathematicians!

🚨Tutoring this upcoming week will be on Thursday instead of our usual Wednesday from 3:30-4:30!

ALL Late or Missing work (up to and including Homework 6) is Due by 9/25. Any work after Homework 6 is part of the second half of the first quarter.

6th Grade Accelerated Math

Our 6th grade mathematicians are diving into the Accelerated 6th Grade Curriculum, beginning with Unit 3: Fractions and Decimals. This unit builds a strong foundation in fraction division and decimal operations. To support their success, please encourage students to practice multiplication facts, especially with numbers greater than 6—these skills are essential for fluency and confidence in upcoming lessons!

7th Grade Math

Students in Math 7 will begin receiving Math 7 homework in addition to their Math 6 assignments. The focus in Math 7 will be on proportional relationships, understanding the constant of proportionality, and revisiting multiplication and division with decimals. These concepts are key to building algebraic thinking and real-world problem-solving skills.

Earth and Space Science with Ms. Sagan

Hi Scientists!

Thank you for attending Back to School Night; we had a wonderful turnout! This week, students engaged in their first investigation, The Slime Lab, which allowed them to apply their understanding of the scientific method.

On Monday, September 22nd, students will complete their Scientific Method summative. This is the same test as the pre-test they took at the start of last week so they can show their growth. This is one of the more difficult tests for students, as they are not all accustomed to studying before a test. Please ensure that your student is using the study blooket under the Module for Unit 0 on Canvas. If the Canvas link says they need an account, that means they accidentally clicked the one that says Account Required. Please check in with them to make sure they are using the correct link if they get lost!

Next week, students will begin to investigate their first scientific phenomenon, Plate Motion. We will start with the Law of Superposition, which will teach students how to figure out the relative age of rocks and fossils.

Roots!

This upcoming week's roots (Week 3) are:

  • *Pyro = fire, heat (Think: pyromaniac, pyrotechnics)

  • Chrono = time (Think: chronology, chronic)

  • *Topo = place, area (Think: topographic, topology, utopia)

  • *Seismo = to shake (Think: seismology, seismograph)

  • Trans = over, across, through (Think: transfer, transport, translate)

Keepers: uni, bi, tri, cent, post, gen, poly, sub, hyper, pre

Notes from MLL Support

Last week students finished BrainPop ELL placement test and HMH Code placement test. In the meantime, students learned different Parts of Speech (pronouns, verbs, and adverbs) and practiced identifying them in completing sentences. Once we have the data from the tests, we will assign students the appropriate levels of books and start READ 180.
