A Message From Mrs. Lucas, BHS Principal
Hello Bobcat Families!
We’re excited to kick off the second quarter and can’t wait to see our students showcase their perseverance and academic growth! Each quarter and assessment serves as a snapshot of progress toward the final grade in June (or May for our seniors). If you have any concerns, we encourage you to stay connected with your child’s teacher—partnership makes all the difference.
Family Support Resources
If your family is in need of assistance, please reach out to Cindy Donovan, our school social worker, at DonovaCM@pwcs.edu. We’re here to help!
Clinic Updates
Our school clinic now uses a sign-in kiosk for student visits. Please remind your child to bring their school ID when checking in.
Impact Aid Survey
The Impact Aid survey is now open in ParentVUE. We ask all parents to complete it as soon as possible. For instructions, visit the PWCS Federal Impact Aid website for instructions on how to complete the survey. If you need help with your ParentVUE account, contact the school office—we’re happy to assist.
Important Reminder
PWCS schools and offices will be closed on Tuesday, November 11 in honor of Veterans Day.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. Wishing you a fantastic weekend!
Principal Lucas
Good News!
Bluebird Houses
Students in the Environmental Club at Battlefield High School recently installed two Bluebird nest boxes on campus. The club received a grant from the local chapter of the Virginia Bluebird Society. The nestboxes are installed to attract the native species, the Eastern Bluebird. As large sections of forest and other rural landscape are cleared for housing and commercial developments, bluebirds find themselves in need of habitat. These boxes provide much needed nesting spaces for the Eastern Bluebird. Students in the club will monitor them throughout the spring and summer.
Pawsitive Praise - October Student of the Month, Amber Luong
"She was so thoughtful and wanted to give me a gift after my dad passed away. She did research on my favorite animal and movie and then made me a homemade card with a long, authentic and encouraging, message that really brightened my day. I have never seen a student show so much compassion and empathy. She delivered the gift in person and told me that she really wanted to do this because if her dad passed away she wouldn't know what to do and would be really sad." ~ Mr. Shepard

Brains Under Construction!
Did you know your child’s prefrontal cortex—the brain’s control center for decision-making, impulse control, and emotional regulation—is still a work in progress well into their twenties? That’s why big feelings, impulsive choices, and occasional risk-taking are part of normal development. During National School Psychology Week, let’s celebrate growth and remember: patience, predictability, and POSITIVE CONNECTIONS help build strong brains!
ASVAB Testing Postponed
Unfortunately, we must postpone the ASVAB test originally scheduled for administration on Nov. 10th. The government shutdowns are impacting the ability to administer the tests. We will send an update as soon as more information becomes available.

Tutoring Opportunities
Varsity Tutoring
PWCS students have access to free online tutoring 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Students can access Varsity by logging in to PWCS Portal. To log in to PWCS Portal, students use their PWCS username and password. See this website for more information.
Khan Academy Free Access via the PWCS Portal for Students
All students in grades 9–12 now have access to Khan Academy through the PWCS Portal, powered by ClassLink. This learning platform offers personalized tools, instructional videos, and practice assessments designed to support academic success—especially in preparation for the PSAT and SAT.
Getting Started Is Easy:
Log in using your PWCS username and password (do not include “@pwcs-edu.org”).
Click the Khan Academy icon to launch the app and begin exploring resources.
Khan Academy is highly recommended for students preparing for standardized tests. Its content is aligned with College Board standards offering targeted practice to help students build confidence and improve performance. The most commonly used SAT preparation courses include:
SAT: Math
SAT: Reading and Writing
These courses are selected because they reflect the core sections of the SAT exam. Khan Academy’s SAT Math course covers algebra, problem-solving, data analysis, and advanced math topics. The Reading and Writing course focuses on grammar, vocabulary in context, and evidence-based reading comprehension, all essential skills for the SAT.
To access the SAT Prep courses, click on the “Courses” menu located at the top of the screen. Scroll down and select “Test Prep” from the list of available subjects. Under the Test Prep section, this where you’ll find the two main course options: “SAT Math” and “SAT Reading and Writing.” These courses are designed in partnership with the College Board and provide targeted practice aligned with the actual SAT exam format.
PWCS encourages all high school students to take advantage of this district provided resource to support their learning and college readiness.
