What will we be learning this month?
In Reading...π
During the month of October, we will complete Module 1 in reading and begin Module 2. In Module 1, Students will build their knowledge about story characters and what makes them unique, with a focus on the realistic fiction genre. We will read texts about interesting characters who are true to themselves when faced with a challenge.
In Module 2, students will build their knowledge about how people use words to express themselves, with a focus on the poetry genre and letters. We will read texts in which people share their thoughts, ideas, and feelings.
In Writing...π
During the month of October, students will be finishing their personal narratives and move into letter writing. In their personal narratives, students will be writing about a summer memory. They will be writing a personal narrative story including a beginning, middle, and end. They will also include vivid details that help describe characters, setting, and the action.
In their letters, students will think about their hopes and dreams for the future. They will then write a letter to their future self. They will describe their goals and how they think they can accomplish them.
In Math...ββ
During the month of October, students will be learning about representing numbers as hundreds, tens, and ones using a place value context. They will find equal ways to represent numbers using 100s, 10s, and 1s. They will also construct and locate numbers on a 1,000 chart. Also, students will develop strategies for adding and subtracting 2-digit and 3-digit numbers and solve a variety of addition and subtraction problems.
Students are encouraged to practice their math fact fluency at home. Some great ways to practice are xtramath.com and/or flashcards to know their addition and subtraction facts in a snap!
Social-Emotional Focus π:
Students learn how to develop a growth mindset and make an effective plan for how to get better at a skill. Students will name a repeated action they can do to practice a skill, identify who they can learn from or other ways they can try to learn a skill, and explain what happens in their brain when they practice a skill.
