Principal's Corner
Greetings Boulevard Families,
We are looking forward to another strong week of teaching and learning! Across the building, students are continuing to engage in rigorous, standards-aligned instruction that builds both content knowledge and critical thinking skills. Below is a spotlight on the learning happening at Boulevard.
3rd Grade Small Groups
Students worked in groups reviewing math practice questions aligned to the OST. Students analyzed multi-step word problems, determined the appropriate operations, and explained their reasoning using models and group discussion.
Standard:
3.OA.D.8 – Solve two-step word problems using the four operations and represent problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity.
Parent Tip:
Encourage your child to write an equation that matches the story problem. This helps connect the words in the problem to the math needed to solve it.
🔬 4th Grade Science Update
Fourth grade students began Unit 6: Matter and the Transfer of Energy, aligned to the Ohio Learning Standards for Science, specifically Standard 4.PS.1 (Energy can be transferred from one form to another).
During this week’s lesson, students:
-
Activated prior knowledge about matter and energy
-
Analyzed visual text features, including scientific photographs
-
Engaged in structured partner discourse to deepen understanding
-
Identified and applied key academic vocabulary such as matter, energy transfer, and conservation of mass
Students are building conceptual understanding around how matter behaves and how energy moves within systems. Through discussion and analysis, they are learning to support their thinking with evidence from text and visuals—an important skill across all content areas.
🏡 Parent Tip
To reinforce learning at home, encourage your child to:
-
Identify examples of matter and energy in everyday life (e.g., cooking, melting ice, charging a device).
-
Explain what happens to matter during changes (Ask: Does the amount of matter change? Why or why not?).
-
Use vocabulary words like transfer, conserve, and mass in conversation.
Having your child “teach” you a concept is one of the most effective ways to strengthen retention and deepen understanding.
5th Grade
Students engaged with a complex informational passage titled “The Courage of Elizabeth Freeman” from the Wonders HQIM text. Students accessed the passage through Google Classroom on their Chromebooks and listened to the text being read aloud while practicing a “think-aloud” strategy. As they listened and read, students paused after each paragraph to record their thoughts, questions, and important ideas from the text. This strategy helped students actively monitor their understanding and think more deeply about the author’s message and key details.
Standard:
RL.5.1 / RI.5.1 – Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
Parent Tip:
When your child is reading at home, encourage them to pause and talk about what they are thinking while reading. Asking questions like “What do you think is important here?” or “Why do you think the author included that detail?” helps strengthen comprehension and critical thinking skills.
Students in grades 3–5 participated in their ELA Interim Assessments this week. We are proud of how focused and determined students were as they worked through the assessment. They took their time, stayed engaged, and demonstrated strong effort as they applied the reading and writing skills they have been learning in class. Our students worked very hard to do their best, and we appreciate the positive testing environment they helped create.
Looking Ahead:
Next week, students in grades 3–5 will complete their Math Interim Assessments, which will give teachers important information about student progress and help guide instruction as we continue preparing for the upcoming Ohio State Tests.
Parent Tip:
Helping your child get a good night’s sleep, eating a healthy breakfast, and arriving at school on time can help them feel confident and ready to do their best during testing. Encouraging your child to simply try their best and take their time can also make a big difference.
Thank you for your partnership! Looking for a productive week ahead.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Principal Mahoney-Curry
Directora Mahoney-Curry

UPCOMING EVENTS!
Dear CHUH parents and caregivers,
PUPS (Parents United for Public Schools) would like to invite you to a Listening Session about your child’s school experience priorities.
The Federal and State governments have both chosen to make significant cuts in public school funding (ignoring what families and communities want). While PUPS and other organizations continue to fight for our schools to be fully funded, districts across the state are being forced to do more with less.
We are hosting a series of Listening Sessions at schools across the CHUH district in order to identify areas that are MOST important to parents and caregivers regarding our schools.
This Listening Campaign is important because it will not only ensure that parent voices inform the cuts and reductions the district is being forced to make in the budget this spring, but it will also allow us to reach so many more CHUH parents and invite them into the conversation about what’s happening with our schools.
Our goal is to collect and organize the information from the listening sessions and present it to the School Board at their meeting on May 6. The school board is eager to hear from our school communities so that they can factor family priorities into where and how budget cuts are made in the coming several years.
Please RSVP for the Tues, March 17, 4:45-6:15 - Lee Road Library - Boulevard, Fairfax listening session at the Lee Road Library, for Fairfax and Boulevard schools. If you can’t make the time for that session, please feel free to attend a session at another school. Dates, times, and locations are listed below.
Parents and supporters from around the district will be helping facilitate the sessions. This is organized by parents and caretakers, for our school community. We would love to hear what you have to say.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Emily Lampe emily.e.lampe@gmail.com (540)272-6626, one of the facilitators at this session, or Joanna Cregan joannamcregan@gmail.com (216) 315-3147 (text preferred)
Best,
PUPS CHUH Chapter (Parents United for Public Schools)
