Principally Speaking....

🦔

Dear Elementary Families,

As we settle into our routines, we encourage families to talk with their children about their school day, celebrate their efforts, and remind them that it is okay to make mistakes as they learn and grow. A strong partnership between home and school makes a tremendous difference in the success of our students.

Thank you for entrusting your children to us each day. We are looking forward to a wonderful school year filled with learning, laughter, kindness, and many opportunities for our students to shine.

Wishing everyone a fantastic start to the school year!

Lisa M. Farrell

REMINDER - DOGS on CAMPUS

This is just a reminder that we ask that you do not bring dogs on campus, if you are walking them please do not allow them to come close to the entrances. There are many children who are very afraid of dogs, seeing the dogs causes anxiety in the students. There are also several people who are allergic to dogs and this may cause them to be uncomfortable.

I LOVE OUR FOUR LEGGED FRIENDS - WE JUST NEED TO BE MINDFUL OF ALL HEIGHTS STUDENTS.

Thank you

Art Room Clothing Reminder!

A quick reminder that Art Day is a day to dress for creativity! Please have your child avoid wearing special, expensive, or favorite clothing on Art Days. We use a variety of materials like including markers, watercolors, and paints that can sometimes stain clothing.

Thank you for helping your child come ready to get messy, create, and have fun! I’m so excited to have a wonderful year in Art with your kiddos!

CURRICULUM UPDATE..... WHAT IS W.I.N ? CURRICULUM UPDATE..... WHAT IS W.I.N ?

What is W.I.N ?

Sharon Public Schools strives to ensure that each student feels supported and confident in their learning journey. We start each year with beginning-of-the-year assessments to highlight each student’s strengths and areas for growth. Teachers use this data to tailor daily instruction, use targeted evidence-based materials, and continuously monitor progress.

WIN ("What I Need") Time - Every day, classrooms have a dedicated WIN block where students can receive support, interventions, and extended learning opportunities that match their current academic needs, without missing core content. Depending on their needs, students use this time for a variety of learning activities or skill practice, including, but not limited to:

  • Targeted Support & Intervention: Small-group instruction to practice and master specific foundational skills. These sessions may take place inside the classroom with a classroom teacher or as a pull-out group with a math or literacy specialist.

  • Practice and Reinforcement: Additional opportunities to apply or strengthen skills introduced during whole-class instruction.

  • Enrichment: Extended learning activities and deeper challenges for students ready to stretch their learning.

What Families Should Know

  • Flexible & Short-Term: WIN is part of the school’s general education program and is designed to be flexible and responsive to the needs of each student.

Most WIN supports are brief, normal parts of the general education experience. Some students may spend their WIN time in their classroom with their teachers and others may see another teacher or specialist outside of the classroom. Groups are fluid, meaning students move in and out as they master skills and build confidence. As a result, families will not receive advance notice every time a student participates in a different short-term group or activity.

  • Direct Communication: Teachers continuously monitor progress and will use their progress monitoring information to determine whether support should be continued, adjusted, intensified or whether a student should exit their group. If teachers or specialists determine that a student would benefit from a longer-term intervention to reach their goals, we will contact you directly. WIN does not replace core classroom instruction, or any services required by a student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP), 504 plan, or English Learner (EL) education plan.

We are excited for a wonderful year of growth, learning, and success together! Please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher anytime if you have questions about their learning journey.

Staying Connected This School Year

As many of you know, the Heights PTO has been planning on launching a new app to help our community stay connected, Honeycomb Labs. Thank you to everyone who helped us pilot this app. We are sad to learn that they are closing down operations this December.

While we’re sad to see it go, we’re grateful for the friendships, connections, and sense of community it helped create among our families. Most importantly, we want to keep that spirit of connection going! Please make sure your family stays connected with our school community by signing up for Membership Toolkit, where you’ll find important PTO updates, information, and opportunities to get involved. Join our PTO community—membership is free! Sign up through: https://heightsespto.membershiptoolkit.com/home. If you have an existing account, please sign in to update your child(ren)'s information for this school year.

If you have an app recommendation to improve our community's connection, please email your recommendation or share it at the PTO public meetings.
