A Message from Dr. Kelley Gallt

November 1, 2023

Dear District 95 Families,

As October came to a close, there was excitement in the air (along with a few snowflakes!) as so many of our students enjoyed Halloween festivities. Our elementary students had the opportunity to wear a costume and participate in a Halloween parade - and many of our staff also got in on the costume fun! Be sure to check out some photos below.

This month in our continuing series about the District's new Empower95 Strategic Plan we talk about the district's Vision - an aspirational view of the characteristics of a District 95 graduate. Even though this vision is about a graduate as they leave our system, it applies to every grade level in our learning community because the skills outlined in the portrait are developed over time. Read more about the Portrait of a Graduate below and follow the district on social media @LZdistrict95 for more on Empower95 and other important information!

Also highlighted below are some amazing student accomplishments, monthly board awards, and a true "all in the family" fundraiser from one of our elementary schools.

Lastly, the district is very proud of the recently announced school report card summary designations, which place all district schools in either the Exemplary or Commendable categories. Read more below about these designations and the many factors that contribute to that calculation.

Have a wonderful week!

Sincerely,

Dr. Kelley Gallt

Superintendent

Empower95 Vision: Portrait of a Graduate

A dedicated team of stakeholders - the Portrait of a Graduate team - was formed during the strategic planning process to develop, incorporate feedback, and refine the a Portrait of a Graduate document which serves to as the Vision for the district. Five characteristics were ultimately identified for the Portrait of a Graduate based on the work of the team and feedback from the broader learning community and the Strategic Planning team. While there are many other characteristics that are important and desirable, these five continually rose to the top as the Vision for District 95 graduates:

Effective Communicator

Global Citizen

Advocate for Self & Others

Future Ready

Growth Oriented

Students at all levels can demonstrate at least some of these characteristics in an age/ability appropriate manner - and will continue to develop these skills over time. Each characteristic is defined by several "Demonstrated by" statements that tells the student, staff, parent/guardian what to look for when developing or mastering these characteristics.

The imagery is also important in reminding us as our students develop their characteristics and head toward becoming a District 95 graduate, the path is not always straight, as seen with the curved stepping stones in the picture. Additionally, the stones near the front of the image are in the sharpest focus - in the same way that we know what step to take next, but we may be less sure of subsequent steps right now. Finally, the background is open but is not clear - much in the way that the future is wide open for our graduates, with endless possibilities.

Stay tuned for more information about Empower95 in our next article and on social media! Can't wait and want to learn more now? Visit our website to learn more about Empower95.

LZHS Mini Portfolio Day LZHS Mini Portfolio Day

LZHS Mini Portfolio Day

The LZHS Art + Design Department, under the direction of Matt Winkelman and Kristen LaJeunesse Roach, hosted the annual Mini Portfolio Day event on Wednesday, October 18th. This annual event provided approximately 70 students, from the North Suburban Conference and beyond, the opportunity to learn about future educational opportunities that can ultimately lead to creative careers.

Participating students created a unique schedule for the day that allowed them to engage in valuable portfolio reviews and participate in informational presentations from 25-30 of the nation’s top Art + Design schools or Universities with strong Art + Design programs. The information students receive and the connections they make at this event often lead to potential scholarship opportunities and future college admissions.

Illinois School Report Cards and Summative Designations

We're excited to share the highlights from the Illinois School Report Card and Summative Designation. Every school in our district has not only met but exceeded the expected standards in Math, ELA, and Science proficiency, earning a perfect score of 100 points in each category. This remarkable achievement reflects the dedication of our educators and the commitment of our students and families. Below are visual representations outlining the metrics for each school, along with the corresponding percentages contributing to the overall summative designation.

Special mention goes to our high school, achieving a perfect graduation rate score of 100 points based on a specified percentage range, a testament to our students' perseverance and the supportive environment fostered by our entire learning community. May Whitney, Seth Paine, and Spencer Loomis also stand out for their consistent academic growth and proficiency, earning Exemplary designations for all three schools. Congratulations to our other five schools which were designated Commendable - also an impressive accomplishment.

While we celebrate these successes, we're also actively working to address areas of identified improvement, including chronic absenteeism and further enhance math proficiency through personalized counseling and innovative instructional practices. With your continued support, we're poised for even greater accomplishments in the future.

Please feel free to reach out to your student’s building principal with specific questions related to student growth and achievement.

A Day in the Class of....Ms. Starke, May Whitney

In this feature article, “A Day in the Class of…”, we highlight the Superintendent as a member of a classroom for one full period. A different school and class are highlighted each month, allowing readers a view into the classroom from a new perspective!. This lesson demonstrated Responsive, Dynamic, and Growth Focused Instruction (relating to the District 95 Instruction Learning Model).

We often talk about the power of exceptional teachers and the incredible moments of education that unfold within the four walls of a classroom. Such a moment occurred in Ms. Starke’s fifth-grade classroom this October.

The lesson I experienced was a profound exploration of self-awareness, collaboration, and the development of critical social skills. Ms. Starke designed the lesson to align with several important educational goals and standards, including 1) develop self-awareness and self-management skills to achieve school and life success, and 2) the importance of social awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships. The lesson expertly tackled the concepts of identifying differences among various social groups, demonstrating effective collaboration with those who are different from oneself, and analyzing ways to work effectively in groups.

Ms. Starke's class also incorporated the 5th Grade Illinois State Speaking and Listening Skills, which allowed students to follow agreed-upon rules for discussions, pose and respond to specific questions effectively, review key ideas expressed, and draw conclusions from discussions. Students were provided the opportunity to think independently about their preferred learning styles.

One particularly intriguing activity involved a game where, as students, we were partnered up and had the chance to sort different types of learning activities into established categories. This seemingly straightforward task turned out to be quite challenging, as each student approached it from a unique perspective. However, the class was determined to find consensus during partner time and again during the whole group share time, fostering valuable skills of negotiation and cooperation.

In the next part of the lesson, the class participated in a live poll learning experience related to preferred learning styles. This exercise prompted vibrant conversations about the importance of understanding individual preferences, making informed choices based on these preferences, considering the opinions of others, and learning how to be respectful when making decisions that are best for oneself. This dynamic exploration of self-awareness and collaboration left a lasting impression on all who were present.

The experience in Ms. Starke's classroom serves as a poignant reminder that remarkable learning opportunities occur every day. It also underscores the indispensable role of dedicated educators who help students develop essential life skills while fostering an inclusive and respectful learning environment.

Isaac Fox - A True District 95 Family Partnership

Earlier in October, the Isaac Fox students, staff, and PTO partnered together to hold a fundraiser benefiting Bricks of Hope, a non-profit organization founded by a Lake Zurich High School alumni, that collects and delivers LEGO sets to hospitalized children. The fundraiser was also a way of honoring current Isaac Fox student Theo Brink, who is currently undergoing cancer treatments at Lurie Children’s Hospital for neuroblastoma.

Isaac Fox families and staff were generous in their support of Theo and the Bricks of Hope initiative, donating approximately 300 LEGO sets as well as more than $1000 in cash. With the cash donations, and in partnership with Learning Express of Lake Zurich, Theo was able to shop after-hours to select the additional LEGO sets for donation to Bricks of Hope.

The connection between Bricks of Hope and District 95 is inherently strong. Founder Adam Petraglia, a 2008 LZHS graduate, was himself a childhood cancer patient after being diagnosed with leukemia on his 11th birthday resulting in a six-month hospitalization. For Adam, playing with LEGOs during his treatment and recovery provided a respite, and restored the feeling of being a kid again. Just one more connection making this a true family partnership...Adam's mom, Dana, is a longtime staff member at Lake Zurich High School! For more information about Bricks of Hope, visit their website at www.BricksofHope.org.

LZHS ACCELerator - Success!

PhilanthroPrint is a student-led business developed through the LZHS INCubator and ACCELerator program, and has just become the first ACCELerator business at LZHS to sell a product (other ACCEL groups are not yet to the market phase).

PhilanthroPrints manufactures small keychains that represent different “causes”. All of the PhilanthroPrint products are 3D printed and use environmentally friendly materials. PhilanthroPrint’s more recent “cause” has been a pink ribbon for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Each purchase of a Pink Ribbon keychain will have 20% to National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF).

Congratulations to LZHS student entrepreneurs Carter Kapanjie, Dillon Bathery and Nik Popovic, for achieving this major milestone.
