Five Words Every Haslett Student Will Know Five Words Every Haslett Student Will Know

Last week, Superintendent Malley sent families a letter about the Standard Response Protocol, the

emergency language every Haslett staff member trained on last week before students came back. If it is still sitting in your inbox, here is the short version.

The protocol is five actions: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter. Each one is announced with a plain directive attached to it, so a student hears not just what is happening but what to do.

The Michigan State Police Office of School Safety adopted the Standard Response Protocol as the state model, and state law requires every Michigan school to be using standardized response terminology this school year. That means the words your child hears in a Haslett classroom are the same words used in Okemos, and the same words the responding officer is using on the radio. In an emergency, that removes confusion.

The one-page family handout, the questions families ask us most, what to expect during drills, and a short video from the Michigan State Police explaining the terminology in their own words are all on our website.

Haslett Voices New Episode: Officer Kolby Casaday Haslett Voices New Episode: Officer Kolby Casaday

There is a new episode of Haslett Voices out, and it pairs well with the safety news above. This spring, Superintendent Malley sat down with Kolby Casaday, our School Resource Officer.

Kolby is a Haslett graduate, and he is the officer who would respond first to any of the situations

described in that letter. We talked about what his job looks like day to day, how he thinks about keeping our buildings safe, and what he hopes students take away from knowing him.

If you want to put a voice to the safety work happening in our schools, this is a good place to start.

Constitution Day and Citizenship Day is observed on September 17, commemorating the day in 1787 when the U.S. Constitution was signed in Philadelphia. Congress officially designated this day in 1952.

Classroom Activities for Constitution Week

In Haslett, students will participate in age-appropriate lessons throughout Constitution Week to learn about the U.S. Constitution and spark curiosity. These lessons vary by grade and school but may include:

Elementary Lessons

  • Reading We Can Get Along by Lauren Murphy Payne with discussion of the idea that even though we are different we need to be able to get along together.
  • Reading We The Kids, a Preamble to the Constitution of the United States, with age appropriate activities following.
  • Activities including word finds, vocabulary words, reading/comprehension, and notetaking using the constitution as the topic.
  • Presentation from the Daughters of the American Revolution
  • School House Rock Constitution

Secondary Lessons

  • Comparing Rules: Drawing parallels between the Constitution's principles and classroom rules.

  • Debates: Using an amendment from the Bill of Rights as a topic for discussion and debate.

  • Creative Projects: Writing a rap or song to review key constitutional concepts.

  • Video Discussions: Watching videos such as The Birth of the Constitution to learn about its creation and discussing the historical context.
