Meet our Student Support Team!
Westwood’s support staff are dedicated to ensuring our students feel prepared, supported, and ready to learn every single day! We are excited to introduce three key members of our Student Support Team.
Ms. Ginger Skille (Licensed School Social Worker) and Ms. Jodi Polingo (Licensed School Counselor) serve as our Student Support Providers. Together with our broader team, they work to remove barriers to learning and school success.
Beyond supporting our classrooms during crises, Ms. Ginger and Ms. Jodi partner with teachers and families to prevent bullying and guide students through conflict resolution. They teach essential coping, social, and problem-solving skills—helping students navigate anxiety, loss, and family changes so they can thrive in the classroom.
Ms. Missy, our Wolf Den Assistant is a fabulous resource who helps students in need through student breaks, sensory needs, and at times, a quiet space to work. Ms. Missy also helps students problem solve when something goes wrong and communicates regularly with Ms. Jodi and Ginger to ensure students' needs are met and to support positive behaviors in the classroom and throughout the day.
Veterans Day
Westwood will hold our annual Veterans Day celebration on Wednesday, November 11th. See the flier below for details and RSVP here or scan the QR code on the flier!
Read Act Communication
Some families will receive this flier coming home in October or at conferences in accordance with the MN Read Act. The QR link will take you to our district literacy page to include a variety of helpful materials, including the Minnesota Department of Education's Reading Toolbox located at the bottom of the website.
Note from our Health Office
Our health office is in need of boys pants, size small through large. If you have some that your child has outgrown and would like to donate, send them to school with your child to drop off at the office. Thank you!
Walk-A-Thon Success!
Thank you for all of the support and donations for this year's Walk-a-Thon! A special shoutout to Melissa Gulden, our Westwood Parent Liaison who was instrumental in coordinating the Westwood side of this event! The unofficial total raised by Westwood students is roughly $20,000! 100% of this money goes right back to our students as we avoid paying a 3rd party fundraising company. Thank you for supporting this event and our students!
Specialists Corner
Check out what your child is learning and other important notes from our Westwood Specialists!
October is Bullying Prevention Month!
October is National Bullying Prevention Month, a time when our school community unites to encourage kindness, compassion and care for one another. To show our support, we invite all students and staff to wear orange on Unity Day—Wednesday, October 21st! By wearing orange, we send a powerful, visible message that we are united together against bullying and work every day to make our school a safe, welcoming place for everyone. Thank you for joining us in celebrating kindness and supporting our students!
Homework
As our students move into the upper elementary grades, homework is designed to reinforce daily classroom learning, build consistent reading habits, and help foster independent study skills. While following standard national guidelines, you could generally expect about 10 minutes of homework per night per grade level: 30-40 minutes for 3rd-5th graders, Monday through Thursday is typical. This time typically includes nightly reading along with targeted practice in math or foundational skills. If your child regularly spends significantly more time than this completing their work, please reach out to your child's teacher so we can adjust support and keep learning positive and balanced!
SOCKTOBER!
Westwood Student Council is teaming up at Westwood for a Socktober community outreach event. Socks are one of the most needed items in local shelters, yet they are the least donated. Throughout the month of October, we will be collecting NEW socks of various sizes and designs to donate to local organizations such as CAER, Passing the Bread, Thumbs Up, and Open Doors for Youth. Students can bring socks to their classroom where they will be counted and collected by their Student Representative.
ALiCE Drill
ALiCE Drill 2 is scheduled for Tuesday, October 13th. In this ALICE Training lesson, students will be introduced to another awareness and communication strategy in the ALICE acronym. The letter "I" stands for Inform, which refers to the information that needs to be communicated to others during an emergency, and how that information can be effectively communicated. Providing accurate, real-time information is important because it can help others remain calm and make decisions about how to stay safe. Students will learn that intercoms, two-way radios, texts, and calls to cell phones can be used to communicate information during an emergency. Students also will learn how information is typically communicated at their school.
While younger students may not play a significant role in directly communicating with others during an emergency, students will learn that there are actions they can take to help make communication easier for adults. They will learn they can be helpful by remaining quiet so everyone can hear information and by noticing details about an intruder’s appearance and location that may be helpful to adults. Using clear, plain language and repeating essential information are also helpful during an emergency.
Practice at Home
To continue the conversation about Inform at home, discuss with your student about the ways you communicate information to one another in your family. To practice communicating details, show your student an object in your home and ask them to list all the details they can about the appearance and location of the object. In addition, ask your student to select an object in your home without telling you what it is. Then, ask them to provide details about the appearance and location of the object so you can guess what it is.
You can find more information on ALICE, talking points, and school emergency information (including how you should respond to a school emergency) by visiting the ISD 728 Student Services website.
Our school district provides families with the option to opt their student out of these classroom drills. If you choose to opt out your student, alternative safety education will be provided through less sensorial safety training methods.
Please contact us if you have any questions or wish to opt your student out of this drill.

Bus Expectations and Consequence Matrix
During the month of September, each student participated in bus safety training with Vision Transportation. Additionally, each class met with Principal Stowe on the school bus to review expectations when riding the school bus to and from school. If your child rides the bus, please take the time to review our district transportation safety information and Consequence Matrix.
