Dear OSES Families,

Acknowledgement of Receipts (AOR) forms are sent home with each progress and report card. AOR’s are used as a tool to ensure that each parent or guardian is receiving information about their student. The AOR’s are also counted as a homework assignment (so an easy “A”). As principal, I collect each of these forms; believe it or not, I read each comments while the forms are scanned. Some of the comments I saw from this report card read “Thank you for everything. She feels like she is really being pushed this year," “thank you so much for being a dedicated teacher and being supportive,” and “infinite thanks for your valuable work.” Some parents wanted more elaboration on conduct points, or how Accelerated Reader works. There were many requests asking to “let us know how we can help” with our students academically and socially. No comment goes unread.

I also want to take this moment to encourage everyone to try and let your student and our staff know how much you appreciate them. I’m not sure why exactly but sometimes as human beings it's easier to send an email about a complaint, rather than a compliment. Unfortunately, it's far more common to get emails about what’s not working, rather than what is. Conversely, it’s a good time to remind staff to let parents know how great a students behavior is, or how hard they are trying, rather than only emailing when there is a problem.

Simple messages can make a big difference.

FIRST FIRST

Vancol

Mrs. Vancol’s class took a field trip to UCF’s STEM day! We participated in five amazing activities: (1) building and testing wings for airplanes, (2) creating geometric soap bubbles, (3) modeling the brain and learning about neuroscience (with Frankenstein’s monster!), (4) math magic and (5) building a ping-pong floater to model Bernoulli’s Principle. We also received a tour of the campus, visiting the library, fountain, and the entomology building (bugs!). We had a great time and this week we are writing about the different activities using a descriptive paragraph form. If possible, we are even MORE excited for our First Grade STEM day on November 1! Remember to sign up to volunteer! 😊

Reminders for all of first grade:

10/30: Pumpkin Book Projects Due

11/1: First Grade STEM Day - Volunteers Needed

11/13: Fall Feast (all adults must be Additions-approved)

SECOND SECOND

Sonn

Ms. Sonn's class has had a wonderful first quarter of learning and fun! Students have learned second grade routines and expectations, have made friends, and are embodying the ORCA Core Values. Congratulations to our August and September Character of Month, Evelyn and Warren. These students can always be counted upon to do the right thing and to show kindness to others. Students enjoyed participating in the kick-off of Red Ribbon week. Students can continue to dress down on Monday with crazy hats or socks, and on Tuesday by dressing as a book character. I hope they enjoy the day off on Friday, Oct 27. Remember 8 points are due on AR by Oct 31. Thanks, families, for all you do to support your child's education!

Academically, students have mastered the Practice of Science and the states and properties of matter in Science, and are moving into physical science topic of force/motion. In Social Studies, students spent the quarter learning about geography and types of communities. They enjoyed making their Hispanic Heritage month projects and displaying them. In Reading, students have read many interesting and entertaining stories, while learning the skills of author's purpose, inferencing, etc. In Math, students have mastered 3-digit addition with regrouping, and are moving into subtraction with regrouping. Students have enjoyed making several math projects, showcasing their knowledge of place value and addition. Students should remember to practice at home daily using the resources listed in our Clever classroom, in addition to AR.

THIRD THIRD

Wullschleger

Our 3rd Graders this week worked diligently on their division facts. They have been working to understand the basics of multiplication, including using arrays, and repeated addition. Make sure they keep practicing those times at home, and they will become multiplication masters in no time.

In the world of science, we explored the three different states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases. Our young scientists had a blast conducting experiments to see how matter can change from one state to another.

In ELA we have been focusing on text features, text structure, authors purpose, and central idea. Our clever readers are learning how to spot essential elements in the text and understand why authors write what they do.

FOURTH FOURTH

Blaske

The students in Ms. Blaske’s class enjoy learning more about their classmates in morning meetings. We start with a special greeting, then we share about our interests, dreams, or goals. After that we do an activity together to start our day. The students listen respectfully to what others are saying. We are currently working on appreciating the differences of others.

FIFTH FIFTH

Aramayo

This week in Mrs. Aramayo’s class the students have been reviewing both the current math and science units. To review in math, students work in randomized groups on a problem and then groups are selected to “teach” the problem. We also have been having a blast dressing up and celebrating Red Ribbon Week!

O'Connor- STEM

In the STEM Lab, we used our knowledge of forces and motion to complete pumpkin catapult challenges. At six different challenges, students tested how far, how high, and tried to knock over cups and go through hoops!

Fun Fact: Pumpkin is a fruit, not a vegetable. Pumpkins come from the flowers on the vine of the pumpkin plant, and carry the seeds for the plant.

Courage looks different to everyone. We all differ in which actions and experiences feel comfortable and which take courage.

As you watch/listen to the book Courage, consider how much courage it might take you to complete some of the tasks in the book. What situations might feel comfortable for you and which ones might require more courage? Different people need courage in different situations.

Step into your courage zone! Try something new that you’ve never done before or attempt something that has been hard for you in the past. It’s okay to ask someone for help

We have had a great week learning how to “Be Kind to our Mind.” All of our students had the opportunity to participate in our Red Ribbon photo done by a drone. It was awesome seeing all of our students excited to participate. We will share information on how to vote soon.

Have a great long weekend! :)
