Principal's Post

Hello Laker Community,

We are excited to share that we are officially a Sparrow Club High School for an amazing young man, Carson. Sparrow Clubs change lives by empowering kids to help kids in medical need through compassion, kindness, and sponsored community service. On Friday, February 24 we will have our Sparrow "kick-off" assembly during Advisory to meet Carson, his family and welcome him as an honorary Laker!

Friday will also be a rainbow-themed spirit day. Each class will have a different color designated to them to create a rainbow effect. Freshman will wear red, sophomores will wear orange and yellow, juniors will wear green, seniors will wear blue, and staff will wear purple. Carson loves rainbows so we thought it would be a good way to incorporate his interests and get people more involved and excited. You can learn more about Carson by scanning the QR code below.

Take care,

Kristen

It's forecasting time! Students should review the following information:

Class of 2025 (Current 10th graders)

You can find more information and applications for courses that require applications on the LOHS website Forecasting Page.

Forecasting materials will include a worksheet that can be used to help you choose the correct amount of courses BEFORE you make your course selections online in StudentVue. New 10th Grade Assessment: The Pre-ACT

The Oregon Department of Education has contracted with PreACT as the state’s new 10th-grade college-readiness assessment. This replaces the PSAT that Oregon high schools used to offer in October. All 10th graders have the opportunity to take this assessment and it is optional for students. 10th graders will need to opt-in to take the PreACT. For 2022-23, the assessment window is in March, but for future years the window will be in October.

Lake Oswego High School will offer all current 10th-grade students the opportunity to take the PreACT on Thursday, March 23, 2023. The test takes approximately 3 hours to administer and students will be excused from their classes to participate, however, students will be responsible to make up any classwork they miss.

Students who are interested in taking the PreACT must opt-in by completing this PreACT Registration by Tuesday, February 21.

There is no fee for the PreACT because the Oregon Department of Education has been directed to provide a statewide opportunity for 10th-grade students served by public schools to access a nationally-normed college entrance practice exam.

The PreACT is a low-stakes test-practice experience for four-year-college-bound students. Score reports provide insight into students’ predicted performance on the ACT, and include valuable career indicators. It is important to note that most four-year colleges and universities are test-optional or test-free, so the ACT or SAT may not be required for admission. Please contact your school counselor with questions. The test covers Math, Science, Reading, and English.

Go to Learn More About PreACT (pdf) if you would like more information.

Please note that we will offer the PSAT on a Saturday in October for interested students who will be in the 11th grade for 2023/24 school year, more details to come.

Youth Truth

It’s that time of year…Lake Oswego schools administer the YouthTruth every spring to help improve students’ experiences in our learning community. Responses from students, staff, and parents/guardians are incredibly valuable. Principals will be sending the survey link at the end of February, and we ask that you please take 15 minutes to complete it before March 24.

Importance of YouthTruth

YouthTruth (YT) is a national nonprofit that harnesses perceptions to help educators accelerate improvements. Student perceptions are empirically linked to academic outcomes, and student perceptions are leading indicators.

YT survey questions are grounded in research about what matters for student outcomes. The findings are used to inform our long-term strategic plan progress, curriculum and instruction, and professional development to improve practices.

The survey design has been rigorously tested for validity and reliability. Through developmentally appropriate questions, students in all grade levels provide feedback on engagement, academic challenges, relationships, belonging, culture, emotional and mental health, diversity, and inclusion. Elementary students will also provide feedback on instructional methods and middle and high school students will provide feedback on obstacles to learning and career and college readiness. Staff and parents/guardians will be asked to provide feedback on similar topics. All responses are anonymous.

Timing of YouthTruth

Lake Oswego YT surveys will open on February 27 and close at midnight on March 24. Students will complete their survey in school, and staff and parents/guardians will be emailed the survey to complete in their own time. Principals will provide school-specific survey links and parents/guardians are asked to take a survey for each school their student(s) attends.

Please contact Ryan Rosenau (rosenaur@loswego.k12.or.us) with any questions about the survey. Thank you in advance for taking the time to provide your feedback.
