🌱 Week 7 Pulse Check – Where We’re At
Kia ora e te whānau,
As spring arrives, so too does a fresh lift in our Pulse data. Our tamariki are showing us that wellbeing and learning go hand in hand—and their voices give us a powerful picture of how things are tracking at TAPS.
💚 Overall Vibe
Our total wellbeing score this week is 8.3—a strong lift from last week’s 7.6 and one of our highest this term. Here’s the breakdown:
-
🌟 85 students said they feel great
-
😀 19 students said they feel positive
-
😐 10 students said they’re “in the middle”
-
😔 9 students said they feel negative
-
✋ 3 students reached out for help—and as always, our staff responded straight away.
That willingness to put a hand up is a sign that our culture of care is alive and well.
📊 What the Data Tells Us
Across the wellbeing domains, our tamariki feel:
-
Valued & Safe – 8.0 (a slight dip, but still strong)
-
Healthy – 7.5 (up +0.5, a welcome lift)
-
Material Basics – 8.9 (steady and secure)
-
Learning – 8.2 (holding firm)
-
Participating – 8.2 (a good recovery from last week’s dip)
-
Positive Identity & Culture – 7.4 (slightly down, but still above national benchmark)
Benchmarking shows we’re consistently tracking ahead of NZ school averages in most areas—especially participation, safety, and learning.
🙏 Heart Data – Gratitude
This week, tamariki expressed 122 moments of gratitude (down from 150). They were most grateful for:
-
💕 Whānau / Family (38 mentions)
-
👯 Friends (15)
-
🏡 Home (14)
-
💪 Good Health (7)
-
🎶 Music & 🎮 Digital Games (6–7 each)
On the giving side, 112 gratitude shout-outs were shared (down from 140). The big themes were:
-
💚 Kindness (39)
-
🙌 Just saying thanks (37)
-
😂 Humour (19)
-
💪 Determination (11)
-
⚖️ Fairness (6)
Even with fewer total shout-outs, the balance of values shows aroha and manaakitanga continue to shine through.
🧭 Final Word
This week’s Pulse tells us:
-
The overall vibe is lifting across the school.
-
Tamariki are feeling healthier and more positive.
-
Belonging and identity remain areas to keep nurturing.
At TAPS, we’ll keep tuning in, taking action, and building a place where every learner knows:
“I belong here, I matter here, I thrive here.”
📊 Attendance Snapshot – Week 7 (25–30 August)

-
By Gender: 68% of girls were regularly at school, compared with 64% of boys.
-
By Ethnicity: Māori students tracked at 68%, Pacific at 71%, and Pākehā at 64%.
-
By Year Level:
-
Our strongest attendance came from Year 5 (78%), Year 7 (75%), and Year 8 (75%).
-
-
By Class:
-
Shining lights were Room 10 (77%), Room 7 (78%), and Room 5 (70%+).
-
🔍 Chronic Absence: 19% of students were absent for more than 10% of the week — still too high, but a reminder of why we keep encouraging whānau to send children whenever they’re well enough to attend.
👉 Key message: every day matters. Being at school means our tamariki are learning, connecting with friends, and building momentum.
Well done to our PTA, who ran a non-uniform day for Daffodil Day to raise money for the Cancer Society. This is a worthy cause and one which is very dear to our hearts at TAPS.
With just over $300 raised, we are really proud of our school for supporting this fundraiser.
Kia tu Kia toa Kia mau - accept the challenge
With their classmates away at Totara Springs, the rest of Te Moananui A Kiwa had the BEST time yesterday at Waterworld, Te Rapa. Even better was the positive feedback we received from the staff at Waterworld about how polite and well behaved these students were.
Special mention of our awesome staff, parents and Whānau, who joined us for the day to make it a success. Thank you.
A fabulous day with fabulous people doing something fabulously fun
Kia tu Kia toa Kia mau - accept the challenge.
Our Totara team had an awesome week away playing sports, making friends, testing their limits and learning some very valuable life lessons....just an amazing week away. Thanks to everyone (and there are lots of you) that helped make this week possible...can't wait to do it all again in 2026!
🌼 Spring Forward Together 🌼
As the first blossoms of spring arrive, it’s the perfect reminder that growth is always possible. Just like the trees that push out fresh shoots and the flowers that brighten our days, our tamariki are blooming in their learning and relationships.
Spring tells us: every new day is a chance to begin again, to bring energy, kindness, and joy into what we do. Let’s step into this new season with optimism, courage, and aroha — knowing that together we can make the weeks ahead full of colour and life.
Here’s to a week of sunshine, fresh beginnings, and plenty of reasons to smile. 🌞✨
