CLASS NEWS
Dear Tiger Families,
What a wonderful week in fourth grade! It was such a joy to see so many of our families and their furry friends at Blessing of the Pets. We ended the week on a high note with a fun-filled pep rally and lots of school spirit! We hope you all enjoy a relaxing and refreshing fall break.
Warmly,

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING
Mathematics
Math Focus for Next Week:
This week, we will focus on Real-World Problems with Addition and Subtraction, complete a Chapter Review and complete our Chapter 1 Test. Our test is scheduled for Tuesday.
Learning Objective(s):
4th Grade students will be able to use bar models to solve real-world addition and subtraction problems.
Home Support:
Any way you can help support our learning is greatly appreciated. Here are some ideas to support this weeks learning objectives: Talk Through Thinking (Math Talk)
Encourage your child to explain their thinking:
“How did you figure that out?”
“Could we solve this a different way?”
“Does your answer make sense?”
English Language Arts & Reading
Focus for Next Week:
Next week, we will begin reading our first novel: Frindle by Andrew Clements! We will use the story to explore character traits, plot development, text evidence, and more. We will also use sentences from the story to practice parts of speech and review sentence structure, with an emphasis on adjectives.
Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to:
Answer text-dependent questions by providing examples from their reading.
Explain how a character’s actions reveal their personality.
Identify adjectives and explain their purpose.
Home Support:
At home, you can support your child’s inferencing skills by asking deeper questions about any stories they encounter (books, tv shows, movies, etc.). Questions such as “what do you think the character is feeling?” and “what do you think will happen next?” help make skills stick.
Our current spelling list is available at our homework link for your reference. The next spelling test will be Thursday, October 29.
Social Studies
Focus of the Week: Hispanic Heritage Month
We will continue learning about heritage, culture, and the contributions of Hispanic and Latino people. Students will explore the lives of notable individuals by researching a person of their choosing and present their findings to the class.
Learning Objectives:
Students will:
Learn about Hispanic and Latino cultures and experiences.
Identify the contributions of notable Hispanic and Latino individuals.
Explain how their contributions have impacted our world.
Academic Vocabulary: Heritage • Culture • Contribution • Accomplishment • Notable
Home Support:
Ask your child to share something they learned about a notable Hispanic or Latino individual. Families can also talk about their own heritage, traditions, and culture and how these shape who we are.
Science
What is Happening in Science/STEM?
Our Force and Motion unit has come to an end, and now it is time for students to take all that they have learned about forces, speed, energy transfer, and collisions and bring their science to life through STEM. The students Engineering Design Challenge will answer the call to a nationwide seatbelt recall. Our engineers will be challenged to design and build a prototype of a seatbelt that will secure a passenger during three collision trials. Day 1 and 2 students will plan their idea, then create an engineering team to combine their ideas for a seatbelt prototype that is labeled, show measurements and meet the criteria and constraints of the design. I am excited to see what our St. Luke’s Engineers create!
