A Note from Dr. Hooks

Dear Hyde-Addison ES Families,

Thank you to all of the families who have supported "Socktober". We have collected over 450 pairs of brand new socks, as part of our school-wide community service activity. We still have until October 28, 2022, to reach our goal of 1,000 brand new pairs of socks. I believe we can do it!

Please be reminded that Literacy Night is next Thursday at 5:30pm. Come learn about some of the great literacy work, games and discussions that are taking place at Hyde-Addison ES.

Did you know that at the end of the 2021-2022 school year...

  • Hyde-Addison's PARCC Literacy average scores were 44 percentage points higher than the DCPS average.
  • Hyde-Addison's Literacy Benchmark Assessment average was greater than the DCPS average on every end of year Literacy Benchmark Assessment including ANET, DIBELS, Reading Inventory (RI) and the Text Reading and Comprehension Assessment (TRC).
  • Only 5% of Hyde-Addison ES students scored at the "Well Below Benchmark" level on the DIBELS Assessment.
  • Only 7% of Hyde-Addison ES students scored at the "Below Basic" level on the Reading Inventory Assessment.
  • Only 7 Hyde-Addison ES students scored at the "Far Below Proficient" level on the TRC Assessment.
  • On each of those assessments, all other students were above, at, or approaching the proficiency or growth level.

Please join us at Literacy Night to hear more about our data and how you can support our students' continued growth and achievement.

NEWS & UPDATES NEWS & UPDATES

DCPS Student Survey

Please see the following letter from DCPS regarding a student survey administered twice a year for students in grades 3-5. If you do NOT want your child to take the Panorama Student Survey this fall, fill out this DCPS form by October 21, 2022: Fall 2022 Panorama Student Opt-Out. To fill out the form, you need your child’s student ID.

Only the DCPS central office team has access to the survey responses, so it would also be helpful if you could email hyde.addison@k12.dc.gov if you intend to opt-out from the survey.

School Portraits will be on Wednesday, October 26

All students who are present at school and have a SIGNED media release form on file will have their school portrait taken by Freed Photography during school hours on Wednesday, October 26. Afterwards, information about how to view and order your child's photo (optional) will be made available.

Halloween at Hyde-Addison

On October 31, children are invited to wear costumes to school, should your family choose to participate. Costumes may NOT promote violence in any way, including any type of weapon or blood. Students may be asked to remove elements of a costume that make learning challenging (ie. sunglasses indoors or wings that make it hard to sit).

Please note that costume props are often left behind at school or become damaged throughout the day, so it is highly recommended that they are left at home. Costumes of great personal significance are also best reserved for out-of-school activities.

Families who wish to join in the fun can cheer on their child in the Halloween parade by lining up anywhere along the parade route at the times listed below. Students will enjoy a quick fall treat on the playground afterwards before heading back inside to continue the important work of learning!

International Night at Hyde-Addison is November 10!

We hope you will join us to celebrate AND we hope you will sign up to host a table about your country of origin or cultural heritage! Sign up to support here: https://bit.ly/3E3CsVs and email julie.hamlin@k12.dc.gov or katilin.opie@k12.dc.gov with any questions.

Family Literacy Night is Thursday, October 20!

Donate to our Socktober Efforts!

Hyde-Addison is doing a schoolwide community service project with the aim of providing 1,000 pairs of brand new socks (adults or children) to individuals in need this winter. Bring them to school beginning October 3 and help us meet our goal by October 28! You just never know what celebration might be in store if we reach 1,000.

Building Access Update

The Hyde-Addison team is pleased to be able to provide a DCPS update with families regarding access to the school building. Beginning Monday, October 3, DC Public Schools will revert to its pre-pandemic School Visitor Policy. Starting on that date, parents and caregivers may visit school spaces as long as they adhere to the school security procedures outlined in the School Visitor Policy. DCPS continues to prioritize a school arrival process where children will be appropriately supervised and safely escorted to the classroom by a school staff member. There will be no change to the Hyde-Addison arrival procedures or times, however families that wish to enter school with their child in the mornings will be required to adhere to the following:

  • 8:10am K-5 Breakfast in Cafeteria- Families who wish to join their student in the cafeteria for breakfast must come through the main entrance, sign in, show identification, and get a visitor pass.
  • 8:20am Pre K Breakfast in Classrooms- Families who wish to join their student in their classroom for breakfast must come through the main entrance, sign in, show identification, and get a visitor pass.
  • 8:30am All Families Exit- Families should say goodbye to the students, go to the security desk to sign out, and leave through the school’s main entrance.
  • 8:35am Instruction Begins- All families have exited the building.

Any person found violating the policies may be denied future access to the building.

We recognize that providing parents and caregivers with access to the school environment enables students to share their school experience and builds bridges between home and school, thus we will also have opportunities for families to visit our classrooms at regular intervals throughout the year. This includes inviting parents indoors for schoolwide meeting, when the weather requires us to move indoors, as well as the option to have an in-person conference at the upcoming Parent Teacher Conference day on October 6, 2022. Additional family engagement opportunities will be communicated throughout the school year.

Early Dismissal

Parents/Guardians must be at the main entrance of the school building before 2:55pm to pick up students for early dismissal.
