An Update from Jason

Hello All,

I hope you are well and had a wonderful long weekend. Thank you to Heather M. for your work, time, and communication for the Race Against Racism. The event was fabulous! And thank you to the adult volunteers who helped make it happen.

A short week. All Solon Blocks are standard, and please schedule students as needed.

It's the last week of May, and we're getting close to the end. Please reach out if you need assistance communicating with caregivers about students' grades or tracking down students. We are finalizing the details on the Guiding Coalition interest forms and anyone who wants to participate in the summer work groups. We will be reaching out to you shortly.

As we are in the midst of interviews for the Registrar, Administrative Assistant, and math positions, and just beginning the interview team collection and process for our Theatre position, I want to assure you that we are diligently working to fill these roles with the best candidates. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let me know.

As we step into a new week, I encourage each one of you to reach out if you need any assistance. Your well-being and success are our top priorities, and we are here to support you in any way we can.

Sincerely,

Jason

Sociology professor Daniel Chambliss, who spent years researching the qualities of elite swimmers, on what creates excellence:

"Excellence is mundane. Superlative performance is really a confluence of dozens of small skills or activities, each one learned or stumbled upon, which have been carefully drilled into habit and then are fitted together in a synthesized whole. There is nothing extraordinary or superhuman in any one of those actions; only the fact that they are done consistently and correctly, and all together, produce excellence.

When a swimmer learns a proper flip turn in the freestyle races, she will swim the race a bit faster; then a streamlined push off from the wall, with the arms squeezed together over the head, and a little faster; then how to place the hands in the water so no air is cupped in them; then how to lift them over the water; then how to lift weights to properly build strength, and how to eat the right foods, and to wear the best suits for racing, and on and on.

Each of those tasks seems small in itself, but each allows the athlete to swim a bit faster. And having learned and consistently practiced all of them together, and many more besides, the swimmer may compete in the Olympic Games... the little things really do count."

Increasing Engagement: tSEL & Culturally Responsive Teaching

  1. Two weeks ago I was in my final class for this semester. One of the other students presented her final project for the semester which was about how she coached a middle school English teacher on how to leverage Assets-Based Pedagogies to increase engagement and academic achievement for her 7th grade students. As soon as she started her presentation, I excitedly started making connections between tSEL and Asset-Based Pedagogies, which has a branch in Culturally Responsive Teaching. Through this teacher leveraging Assets-Based Pedagogy, she was able to embed tSEL and Culturally Responsive Teaching into the structure of her lesson while maintaining focus on academics. It was really exciting to see another real-world example of how teachers are using culturally responsive teaching and tSEL to increase student engagement, feelings of connection and belonging, and academics for students. For me, it continued to clarify that it is not about focusing on belonging or academics, but instead is about using engaging and culturally responsive lessons to create an increased sense of belonging and increase academic outcomes.
