Welcome Back
Setting up your Classroom for the 1st Day of School
We hope you had a restful summer. This is always an exciting part of the year where you get to build new teacher-student relationships with a new group of students. The first few days of the year are important in having students learn about their teacher, have the teacher learn about their student, and sets the conditions for learning for the year.
Below are some takeaways from the Edutopia article “The First 5 Days: The Key to Success” by Cheryl Abla:
- The first five days of school are crucial for creating a “just-right” classroom environment where students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.
- Focus on relationship-building—learning students’ names (and proper pronunciation), sharing about yourselves, and engaging in fun icebreakers to spark connections.
- Co-establish classroom norms and reviewing procedures (like restroom use or supply policies), while using positive reinforcement to reinforce routines.
- Start practicing routines that will help students succeed in the classroom.
If you need additional support, please reach out to our TOSA team: Debbie Nevin, Janette Gomez-Lamadrid, Jessica Sphar, Ricardo Cisneros.

California College & Career Access Pathways (CCAP)
The California College and Career Access Pathways (CCAP) Program at Southwestern College is an Advanced Scholastic and a Career and Technical Education Program that allows high school students in 9th through 12th grade to apply for dual enrollment at Southwestern College (SWC).
Every academic year, over 400 SUHSD students are enhancing their high school education and are earning college credit at the same time, thanks to a unique collaborative effort between the Sweetwater Union High School District, other surrounding charter schools, private schools and Southwestern College.
As part of the CCAP program, students are getting more mileage from after-school classes, like Psychology and Art. These "two-for-one" classes allow students to earn elective credits at the high school level and build up college credits that are transferable to Southwestern College or any University of California or California State University campus. Students accomplish all this without ever leaving their home campus.
