Five students qualify for the DECA International Career Development Conference

Five students will represent Walled Lake Consolidated Schools on the biggest of stages at the 2024 DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) from April 27-30 in Anaheim, California.

Walled Lake Northern’s David Devaney may be a freshman, but he looked more like a seasoned upperclassman at the DECA State Competition. Devaney won the Overall Finalist medal taking first place in the Principals of Finance Series for both his role play and test score. Devaney is now focused on bringing home some DECA glass from the ICDC.

Walled Lake Western seniors Roman Adhikari, Daniel Raskin and Bryce Zacharia were among eight Warriors to earn All-State honors and each finished in the Top 6 in their respective events at the state competition. Adhikari and Raskin teamed up to qualify for the ICDC in Business Law and Ethic Team Decision Making. Zacharia will compete in Business Services Marketing.

Walled Lake Central senior Abigail Piskover qualified for the ICDC in Restaurant and Food Service Management. She wrote a 20-page paper on how a restaurant can prevent employee turnover.

This is the first time Walled Lake Consolidated Schools has sent more than one qualifier to the DECA International Career Development Conference in a single year. The districts five qualifiers are among more than 22,000 high school students, teacher-advisors, business professionals and alumni that will attend this year’s conference.

Red Wings' Teacher of the Year Nominee

Hickory Woods Elementary 4th grade teacher, Karie Starr, is up for the Red Wings' Teacher of the Year!

"With over 20 years in the district, Karie Starr had developed a co-teaching program allowing for more than one teacher to work with children in various sized groups for individualized instruction. Her co-teaching program was so successful that it was implemented across the other grades in the school. As a mentor, she guides student teachers, nurturing the next generation of educators. Additionally, she adapts her teaching for ASD and ESL students, while providing essential resources like clothing and school supplies."

Vote for her https://www.nhl.com/redwings/community/teacher-of-the-month.

You can vote daily until April 5.

Board votes to move forward with bond proposal on May 7

During the February 2 Board of Education meeting, the Board of Education voted unanimously to move forward with a $250 million bond election on May 7, 2024.

The 2024 bond proposal is focused on student safety, educational opportunities, technology, and facilities; the millage rates associated with this proposal will provide a tax decrease for residents. Over the past two decades, our community has supported bond proposals in 2019, 2013, and 2004. As a result of this past investment, the school district and our students have been able to thrive.

A list of the 2024 bond projects, by school, will be published on the District’s website, as well as the bond language, frequently asked questions, videos, and other information. To help inform our community, the District will host a series of informational bond meetings over the next several months. Meeting dates, locations, and times will also be on the bond webpage.
