Longfellow Middle School
Information for LMS Families
From the Principal's Office
Greetings Longfellow Families,
It was another great week at Longfellow! Although, we have had a few behavioral challenges that seem to be stemming from students being unaware of the impact their words have on others and our school community. We will be engaging 7th and 8th grade students in grade level assemblies next week with a focus on "The Power of Words".
Important Upcoming Dates
- October 4th - No School
- October 10th - No school: P/T Conferences 12pm - 8pm
- October 11th -No school: P/T Conferences 8am - 12pm
- October 14th - No school: Mid-Fall Break
Speak Up Speak Out
At Longfellow we keep student and staff safety at the forefront of all of our decisions. Please encourage your student to help us keep Longfellow a safe place. Please also encourage your child to utilize the Speak Up, Speak Out anonymous tip line if they hear a classmate make a concerning comment or threat. All incidents are thoroughly investigated and, when appropriate, we will execute disciplinary action in alignment with our Disciplinary Framework.
LMS Daily Schedule
LMS Office Hours: 7:30 am - 4:00 pm (Daily)
Daily School Arrival/Dismissal Information
- Students who arrive prior to 7:50 am, must use W12 and report to the cafeteria. At 7:50 am, all students will be able to access the building through doors: E7 and S8 until 8:05 am. All students who arrive after 8:05 am will be directed to enter through S8 (the main office doors) to check in.
- For safety reasons, there is to be no loitering (to linger idly or aimlessly) of students in the school building or on school grounds after their daily programs are finished. Students must leave the school grounds no later than 3:50p.m. (2:50 on Early Release Wednesdays) unless they are attending a school-sponsored, supervised activity, or they have a scheduled appointment with a teacher.
Additional Resources
- To start the 24-25 school year, we developed a Longfellow Information Guide to help our students and families easily access enrollment, procedures, academic information, etc.

Attendance & Health Updates
Wauwatosa School District Attendance Information
New this year!
Guardians are now required to use the Infinite Campus Parent Portal to report student absences, late arrivals or early departures. For the safety and security of all students, excused absences are to be reported through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. For instructions on how to access absence reporting inside of the Infinite Campus Parent Portal, please see the Announcements section when logging into the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. If you need help navigating the new software or have another question or concern regarding attendance, please call 414-773-2402.
Remember, students are allotted 10 parent excused absences per school year excluding medical appointments. If your child is absent for any period of the day due to a doctor/dentist appointment, please provide a medical excuse with dates within 72 hours of the absence.
Immunization Updates
Wisconsin has updated its immunization requirements for school entry. These updates, which align with national vaccine recommendations, aim to improve the health and safety of children, educators, and staff.
Key Changes:
Meningococcal Vaccine: Required for students entering 7th grade, with a booster for those entering 12th grade.
Chickenpox Vaccine: A health care provider's diagnosis is now required for exemption from the chickenpox vaccine, rather than just a parent's report.
What Remains Unchanged:
Exemptions for medical, religious, or personal reasons are still available.
There is no requirement for flu or COVID-19 vaccines, though they are strongly recommended.
As you register your middle or high school student for school, Infinite Campus may alert you that your student’s immunizations are not up to date. This is due to the new immunization law changes. Please send an updated immunization record to your secondary student’s school main office or health room as soon as possible. You can get your student’s immunization records from their medical provider or by looking your student up on the Wisconsin Immunization Registry website. If you choose not to have your student vaccinated, you must complete an immunization waiver.
If you have any questions about immunization requirements for school or need help accessing resources for immunizations for your student, please contact your school nurse.

ACAL
Activities Center at Longfellow (ACAL) is a great place for middle school students to gather and enjoy a variety of social and sport activities. There is a nominal fee. The fee is paid directly to the Wauwatosa Recreation Department through the Infinite Campus parent portal. Instructions and a designated link will be provided prior to the start of the school year. ACAL is scheduled to select Friday nights during the school year: one Friday for sixth grade students and one Friday for seventh/eighth grade students. Students are required to present their student I.D. card in order to be admitted. Replacement I.D. cards may be purchased in the office for $5.00 during lunch or after school.
Student Services
Managing the various aspects of parenting can feel like a balancing act between the numerous responsibilities and expectations. As a result, the stress that parents tend to shoulder can build up to an overwhelming degree. Even though the pressure can feel overwhelming, there are ways in which we can minimize the effects of stress. The US Surgeon General published an advisory report called, “Parents Under Pressure”, detailing the impact stress can have on parents and caregivers. Take a look at this read to learn more about the relationship between parental stress and mental health and to dig into resources around taking action.
Please know, the Student Services Department at Longfellow is available to partner in building a between home and school. This bridge can play a role in reducing some of the stress that can affect families during this time of your child’s educational journey.

We will be trying out having small concessions (chips, water, candy) at our home games this year. Water = $1, Candy bar = $3, Chips = $3. We ask that you talk with your students about cleaning up after themselves and throw away any trash they have from concessions or see in the bleachers
Event Expectations
With home Athletic Events coming up, please remind your students that the same behavior that is expected at after school events is the same as during school. If they are present for the games, they need to be in the gym unless they are leaving or going to the restroom. They should not be roaming the halls, or running in and out of the gym.
Intramurals
Right now the Intramural League we have is Pickleball that meets every Tuesday (weather permitting) from 3:40-4:30. Please fill out the Athletic Participation form in order to be in the Pickleball Intramural Club! https://forms.gle/iWPnGhTuR6uaGxJ97
Fall Fundraiser for Athletics
As our Fall sports are in full swing, we would love your support in donating to our Fall Fundraiser. The funds acquired by the Fall Fundraiser will be used towards: Cheer uniforms, Cheer camp admission, Cross Country digital printer
timers, Cross Country shorts, Girls Basketball uniforms, and Girls Basketball warmups. As these are our first priorities (in no order) for the Fall Fundraiser, other needs consist of new paint for the small gym, a scoreboard for the small gym, paint for the outside basketball courts, and new holes put in for volleyball poles so we can have 2 courts in the large gym instead of 1. Thank you for your donation and please help share the link to others you know!https://app.launchfundraising.com/FundraiserHomeInfo/579758/FTR4NV

United Way, with help from ProHealth Care and many others, is hosting the third Project Homeless Connect Waukesha event, a free resource fair for anyone facing housing or financial instability. Last year this event served 100 individuals of all ages to provide everything from healthcare to haircuts, hygiene products to housing case management. This year, the event is expected to be even larger — including a free laptop for households who need one that they can take home that day.
The event will be held Tuesday, October 22, from 10am-3pm (guests should arrive before 2pm to receive services, and by noon to receive free lunch) at the Carroll University Campus Center Building, 101 N. East Avenue Waukesha, WI. Note: For those in the Milwaukee Area, there is a similar event on Thursday, October 17, 10am-3pm at Marquette University. Details on both events can be found at UnitedWayGMWC.org/PHC.

Child Development Screening
This school year, Wauwatosa School District will offer Child Development Screenings from 9am-12pm at the Fisher Building (12121 W. North Ave) on the following Friday mornings: October, 25, 2024; December 6, 2024; February 7, 2025; and April 4, 2025. Please see these flyers for information regarding who is eligible for screening and how to sign up for a screening slot.
Trunk or Treat + Food Drive
The Recreation Department’s Trunk or Treat Community Event is back on Saturday, October 19! This year, the Rec Department is partnering with the Wauwatosa Police Department to provide this safe and fun event. Scan the QR code on this flyer to sign up to decorate a trunk or bring your child to collect candy. We kindly ask those participating and/or attending to bring donations as the event also serves a food drive for Tosa Cares. There will be music, face painting, food trucks, and a popcorn sale by Next Steps!
November 2024 Referendum Information Hub
On Tuesday, November 5, our community will vote on two referendum questions: an operational referendum and a capital referendum. Please click here to view our referendum information hub online.
It is important to note that the school configuration is yet to be determined. This proposed capital referendum does not commit the District to a JK-6 or 7-12 model. How and where the students are configured and grouped for learning purposes has not yet been determined by the Board of Education.
Longfellow Clubs & Organizations
To start the 24-25 school year, we wanted to provide our students and families to easier access to the clubs and organization that we have here at Longfellow. Please review Longfellow's Clubs and Organizations. As students create more clubs and organizations, we will update this powerpoint!
