At the February Board of Education meeting, District Food Service Director Christine Downs wowed us when she highlighted the fresh, nutritious, locally sourced ingredients our school meal program offers to students through strong partnerships with Hudson Valley producers — something that truly sets our District apart and is a point of pride for our community.

Students can regularly choose from locally-sourced items such as Hudson Valley Fresh milk, Milestone Mills multigrains, Issa’s granola bars, a colorful fresh salad bar, and locally sourced meats and plant-based options. Plans are underway to add trout from Steelhead Hudson Valley, continuing the program’s growth.

As a reminder, all students, regardless of income, are eligible to receive free school meals when school is in session.

Community members who would like to support the locally sourced food effort can contact the Food Services Department at (845) 657-2373 x. 2181. Volunteer drivers are always welcome to assist with local pickups.

Former Hurley School Returns to Community Use Former Hurley School Returns to Community Use

We’re happy to share with the community that the sale of the former West Hurley Elementary School building has officially been completed.

Since the contract to sell the West Hurley property was executed in 2017, the Board has been working through a long and often complicated process with the buyer and town to bring this to the finish line and complete the final steps for closing the sale. Much of that work involved regulatory reviews and approvals outside the District’s direct control, and while progress wasn’t always visible due to confidentiality, the Board remained committed to seeing this property move forward in a responsible way.

Thank you to our neighbors for their patience. With the sale now finalized, the building will be repurposed as housing—something our community truly needs—and will be added to the tax rolls, ultimately contributing to the local tax base for the benefit of everyone who lives here. We are so pleased to see this property enter its next chapter and begin serving the community again.

Preliminary Budget Discussions Underway: How to Stay Informed and Engaged Preliminary Budget Discussions Underway: How to Stay Informed and Engaged

The multi-month budget development process for the 2026-2027 school year kicked off in January. We are still in the initial phase of building the budget, and the information shared so far is just a starting point. The proposal will undergo many rounds of revisions and refinements as information about the tax levy limit is finalized and the District’s State Aid allotment is released from Albany in April.

Superintendent McLaren is scheduled to make a final budget recommendation to the Board on April 7, which the Board plans to adopt on April 21. The community will vote on the budget on Tuesday, May 19.

We encourage our community to follow along with the budget process. Our website includes links to budget presentations and a budget calendar. You can also watch all Board meetings on our YouTube Channel.

We want to extend our appreciation to the staff, volunteers, and community partners who made the recent Onteora Middle School’s Community Connections Day such a vibrant and meaningful experience.

The event brought together students, staff, and volunteers from across the Onteora community for a day filled with hands-on learning and enrichment led by community volunteers and designed to appeal to diverse interests and learning styles, including cooking, arts and crafts, video production, movement, and performance.

It was fun for us to see our own Board member Rick Knutsen and his wife, Frances, leading an improvisational acting session, and Board member Jenny Jared offering a yoga experience for students.

Community Connections Day exemplifies the strength of our partnerships and the District’s commitment to honoring student voice, individual interests, and the positive impact of community involvement on student learning.

The process to run for a school board seat in 2026 has begun. If you care deeply about public education and want to contribute your skills and perspective, consider running for one of the three seats that will be up for election on May 19. Each seat carries a three-year term, beginning on July 1, 2026, and ending on June 30, 2029.

To appear on the ballot, candidates must personally submit a petition with original signatures from 54 eligible Onteora Central School District residents. Petitions must be submitted to the District Clerk no later than Monday, April 20, at 5 PM. Candidates are also required to submit biographical information for publication in the Budget Newsletter this spring.

Understanding Snow Days, Delays, and School Closures Understanding Snow Days, Delays, and School Closures

This winter has brought a wide range of weather conditions across our large and geographically diverse district. While we always want students in school for instruction, meals, and essential services, our top priority is — and will always be — student safety.

Because conditions can vary significantly from one part of the district to another, decisions about delays, early dismissals, or closures are made with careful consideration. For more insight into how snow day and delay decisions are determined, families are encouraged to visit our website to review the Superintendent’s message on winter weather procedures.

We have learned that the snow day used on Monday, February 23 has been waived by New York State, therefore as of Friday, February 27, we have one snow day remaining. You can find the current tally, along with the calendar changes that will happen if we need to use more days than are allotted here.
