Themes of the Month
CMIT South Elementary June Themes
Character Theme: Integrity
STEM Theme: Visual Arts
Principal's Desk
Dear CMIT South Elementary Families and Friends,
As we step into the beautiful month of June, we are officially entering the final stretch of the school year! I want to extend a huge wave of encouragement to our wonderful students and families. This is the time to gather all our energy, stay focused, and finish the year with the same excellence we started with. Parents, your dedication and partnership have been our anchor all year long, thank you for continuing to guide our scholars to the finish line!
With the arrival of a new month, we are introducing our final character word of the school year: Integrity. As we wrap up our academic journey together, letโs reflect on this powerful guiding principle:
"Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching." โ C.S. Lewis
Whether our Tigers are completing their final projects, enjoying recess, or transitioning into summer, practicing integrity ensures they are building a strong foundation for life. Let's encourage them to let their character shine brightest in these final weeks!

Birthdays are so much fun to celebrate with classmates. However, during the school day, the health and safety of each student are important, especially students with food allergies. Students are ONLY permitted to bring in NON-FOOD items to distribute to classmates at the end of the school day. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping all of our students safe at CMIT South ES.
Additionally, please note that teachers and staff are unable to participate in distributing communications/invitations or email addresses related to birthday celebrations. All planning for birthdays needs to happen outside of school so that it does not take away from the purpose of instruction.

Counselor's Corner
With the school year quickly coming to a close, this is a wonderful time to reflect on how much our students have grown both inside and outside of the classroom! During the month of May, students have been focusing on the character trait of perseverance and learning the value of continuing to work hard, stay positive, and keep trying even when things feel difficult. Families can help build perseverance at home by encouraging children to try again after making mistakes, praising effort instead of just results, setting small achievable goals, and allowing children opportunities to solve problems independently. Reading books about determination, learning new skills together, and talking openly about challenges can also help children develop resilience and confidence. Thank you for your continued partnership and support in helping our students grow into strong, caring, and determined learners as we finish the school year strong!
Warm regards,
Ms. Chandler
Math Department
As May comes to a close, our students are continuing to work hard and grow as mathematicians each day! It has been exciting to see their confidence build as they solve problems, explain their thinking, and apply math skills in new ways. These last few weeks are a great opportunity to keep math learning active at home and begin preparing for summer. Encourage your child to practice math facts, play number games, help with cooking measurements, count money, tell time, and look for math in everyday activities. Even a few minutes of practice each day can help students stay sharp and confident for the next school year. Thank you for your continued support and partnership in helping our students succeed in math!
Mathematically,
Coach Jones
Reading Department
Dear Tiger Families,
As we head into the final weeks of the school year, we are so proud of the growth our students have made in reading and literacy skills! This is a great time to keep encouraging strong reading habits at home as we finish the year strong and begin thinking ahead to summer learning. Reading together each day, visiting the library, practicing sight words, and talking about books are simple ways to support your childโs progress. Even everyday activities like reading signs, menus, recipes, or game instructions help build important literacy skills. Thank you for your continued partnership and support throughout the school yearโwe look forward to ending the year on a strong and successful note!
Warmly,
Mrs. A. Matthews

1st Grade
Grade Level Blurb:
The First Grade Team would like to welcome our families to another exciting week of learning! We canโt believe we are already nearing the end of May and how quickly this school year has flown by. Our students continue to work hard each day, and we are so proud of all the growth they have made academically and socially. As we move through these final weeks of the school year, please be sure to read below for important updates, reminders, and upcoming events. Thank you for your continued support and partnership!
Updates:
1. MAP was moved to this week. Be sure to send your scholar to school with a charged Chromebook and headphones this week, especially.
2. Spelling homework has concluded for this school year.
3. Topic 9 math homework will be our final math homework for the year. Please ensure your scholar is working on it nightly.
Reminders:
1. Students should bring their yellow take home folder to school and home every day. Parents, please sign their behavior calendar in acknowledgment of daily behavior. Please also remove all papers on the "Keep at Home" side.
2. Check ParentVue regularly and review all graded work.
3. The weather has changed DRASTICALLY. Please ensure your scholar comes to school dressed in accordance with the weather. We go outside as long as the temps are about 32 degrees.
Reading Updates:
This week, are continuing to review the elements of a biography as students read, "Eleanor Roosevelt."
Phonics:
We are learning the /oi/ sound spelled -oi and -oy. Our spelling words are: boil, boy, coin, join, joy, soil, spoil, toy, been, going.
Math Updates:
We are working through topic 9! In this unit, students are comparing two-digit numbers.
Families can support math learning at home by practicing comparing 2-digit numbers, finding 1 more/1 less and 10 more/10 less, and using the greater than (>), less than (<), and equal to (=) symbols. Use number charts, flashcards, games, or everyday numbers you see at home to help build confidence and number sense in a fun way!
Science Updates:
We are working through topic 1 on light and sound! Students are investigating how sound is made, observe different sources of light, and explore how light interacts with various objects.
Families can support this learning at home through simple, hands-on activities.
Encourage your child to notice and describe sounds around the house, create simple instruments, or explore how sounds change. You can also observe different light sources, play with shadows using a flashlight, and test household objects to see which ones let light pass through or block it.
Encouraging your child to ask questions, make predictions, and share what they notice will help build their curiosity and understanding. Thank you for supporting science learning at home!
Social Studies Updates:
Students are continuing to learn through Chapter 4- Life Today and Long Ago. In this chapter, students are learning more about the past, present, and future. They are comparing schools and communities, daily life, and even technology and transportation to the past and present! Talk about your experiences with your scholar! How was life when you were their age? ๐
Health Updates:
We are beginning the next unit on germs. In this topic, students are learning about what germs are and how to keep their great bodies safe against germs!
2nd Grade
Grade Level Blurb:
Dear Second Grade Families,
Can you believe it? We only have 14 days of school left! ๐๏ธโจ We are so proud of how much our scholars have grown this year, and we want to finish the year strong.
MAP Testing Next Week ๐ Next week, we will be finishing up our final round of MAP testing. To ensure your scholar is ready to do their best, please make sure they:
๐ Bring their Chromebook fully charged every day.
๐ด Get a good nightโs rest.
๐ณ Eat a healthy breakfast.
Field Trip Fun We had an absolutely wonderful time on our last field trip to the Watkins Park Nature Center! The scholars did a great job exploring nature and learning about our local environment. It was a fantastic way to celebrate their hard work.
Field Day is Coming! Our next big event is Field Day! Itโs going to be a day full of fun, games, and team spirit.
๐ Permission Slips: If you havenโt already, please sign and return the permission slips as soon as possible so your scholar can participate!
Thank you for your continued support as we head into these final weeks of second grade!
Reading Updates:
We are excited to share that we have officially concluded our reading curriculum for the school year! Our scholars have worked incredibly hard, and it has been a joy to watch their literacy skills grow over the past several months.
Important Note on Textbooks: Starting today, scholars will begin bringing their reading textbooks home. Please note that these are yours to keep! You do not need to send them back to school. We encourage you to keep them over the summer for extra practice or to revisit some of your child's favorite stories from the year.
Thank you for supporting your reader every step of the way!
Math Updates:
Final Math Unit: Exploring Shapes!
We are officially diving into our final math unit of the year: Geometry! ๐ Over the next two weeks, scholars will be identifying, describing, and drawing two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. We will be focusing on their attributes, such as the number of faces, edges, vertices (corners), and angles.
To help your scholar master these concepts before the school year ends, here are a few fun and easy activities you can try at home:
Shape Scavenger Hunt: Ask your child to find "real-world" versions of shapes around the house. Can they find a rectangular prism in the pantry (a cereal box)? A sphere in the toy bin (a ball)? A cylinder in the kitchen (a soup can)?
"Build It" Geometry: Use toothpicks and marshmallows (or playdough) to build 2D shapes like squares and triangles, or 3D shapes like cubes and pyramids. This is a great way to count vertices and edges!
Secret Shape Riddles: Play a guessing game! Give clues like, "I am thinking of a shape with four equal sides and four right angles. What am I?" (A square!).
Shape Art: Challenge your scholar to create a picture using only specific shapes. For example, "Can you draw a robot using three triangles, four rectangles, and two circles?"
We look forward to seeing our scholars become "Geometry Experts" as we wrap up our final days together! ๐
3rd Grade
Grade Level Blurb:
The countdown is on with only 14 more school days remaining! The students are definitely focused on the finish line. Although it was a short week, it was certainly a busy one, beginning with our exciting field trip to the Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary. The drizzle did not stop the students from enjoying this memorable experience. They had the opportunity to release a freshwater sunfish back into the Patuxent River ecosystem, try fishing, and even put on waders to enter the river and catch fish using a two-person push net. This method of catching fish is called seining.
Throughout this school year, students have participated in a variety of field trips and hands-on experiences designed to enrich and extend their learning. We hope they have enjoyed and benefited from these wonderful and memorable opportunities.
Field Day is quickly approaching! Please be sure to return the permission slip so your student is able to leave the school grounds to participate. Students will still need to bring lunch from home or get one from the school cafeteria. Also, please keep an eye on the weather forecast in case sunblock is needed.
Reading Updates:
This week in Reading, students began watching the movie Holes as an introduction to our upcoming novel study. While watching, students are practicing comprehension and listening skills by following key events, characters, and settings throughout the story. Next week, students will begin a collaborative โquick readโ activity where groups will read assigned chapters from the book, work together to comprehend and summarize the most important details, and present their findings back to the class.
Math Updates:
Our mathematicians spent time this week reviewing important skills and strategies in preparation for MAP Math testing. We are excited to share that we have now completed all of our Math testing for the school year (unless make-up testing is needed). Yay!
Some of our students have also begun exploring the Cartesian Coordinate System and practicing how to locate ordered pairs on a graph. We will continue building these skills next week through engaging and fun hands-on activities.
Science Updates:
Some of our scientists investigated the three states of matter. We listened to the story Ice Boy by David Ezra Stein, which connected perfectly to our learning. Throughout the story, Ice Boy transforms through all three states of matter. After reading, we used a states of matter anchor chart to help complete a follow-up activity that reinforced the concepts of solids, liquids, and gases.
Health Updates:
In Health, we continued learning about the bones in our bodies. We read about and discussed different ways to protect our bones and keep our bodies healthy. Students then completed an activity in which they identified and listed five ways to help keep their bones strong and protected.
4th Grade
Grade Level Blurb:
Greetings Team 4Ward,
I hope that message finds you well. We are now down to the last month and 14 days of Fourth Grade. We will have concluded our field trips for the year. Mrs Weldon and Mrs. Pearson classes had a chance to explore nature and determine humans' role in the environment. We thank you all for your support with our field trips this year. Our students had the opportunity to have new experiences and visit places they havenโt been before. We will finish any testing and make up testing this week.
โฑ๏ธPlan for Summer:
Summer break is fast approaching and this is the time to plan how your scholar will continue to grow. i-Ready and IXL will be available to our students throughout the summer. Also take some time to look into the different offerings given by the Prince Georgeโs County Memorial Library System. Students should have at least 45 minutes of practice in math and reading weekly. Begin planning now how your scholar will reach this goal each week. The county also releases an enrichment packet each year that can be used.
๐ปMany class activities use online tools. A charged computer ensures your child can fully participate in lessons and complete assignments. Our students also need a pair of wired headphones to complete activities and for testing. Students who arrive on time are better prepared for learning and reduce classroom disruptions. Please plan to have your child at school a few minutes early each day. A healthy breakfast helps students focus and have energy for learning. School breakfast is available daily until 8:00 when students arrive in the morning.
We are grateful for your ongoing support in helping students feel safe, prepared, and excited about learning. Thank you for partnering with us to make this a positive school year. Letโs finish strong together!!
Warmly,
Team 4Ward

This program will be available all summer for students to continue to utilize in both reading and math. Please help your child complete at least 45 minutes of math and reading to grow their abilities.
Absences:
This is a friendly reminder that late work is only accepted if a student has an excused absence! If a scholar is absent and does not bring a note they will earn a 0 on the assignment that was missed. Please read the reminders to ensure that you are partnering with your scholars to make them successful for school. If a scholar leaves early or arrives late to school and it is not excused they will earn a 0 for all work that is not completed.
If your scholar is absent, please complete the CMIT South ES Absence Google Form within 3 days of your scholar returning back to school. https://forms.gle/euXzCpDvNGbLwb8U6 Work is provided to students upon their return to school with an excused absence.

Grading:
Please check Synergy weekly to see scholarโs updated grades. Canvas is a Learning Management System in which scholars utilize to complete assignments and get access to materials. The grades entered in Synergy are those that will be used to calculate progress reports and report cards.
It is imperative that work is complete and turned in on time in order to receive full credit. Our district has set policies regarding assignment completion and make-up assignments. Only students that have an excused absence will be given an opportunity to receive and complete missing assignments. Assignments not completed will receive a final grade of โ0.โ
Uniforms:
We are a uniform school. Students must be in the proper uniform each and every day. Students are expected to have mostly black shoes. They may wear a navy blue or school logo jacket or pullover during class. Students will be asked to remove any jacket or sweater that is not following the uniform policy. Students are not allowed to wear Crocs on school grounds.
Reading Updates:
We have concluded reading the texts in Volume 1 textbook. This book has been given to your scholar to keep and should remain at home.
This Week:
We read a story called โMamaโs Window. In this story we read about a boy named โSugarโ who has to live with his uncle in the Mississippi Delta. While reading this story students analyzed the plot of the story. Students will also explore how the setting affects the events in the story. Finally students were able to see how the character of Sugar grew and changed in the story. Students will begin to work with r-Controlled words this week as well. Students will show their understanding of the story by acting out a sequel to the story.
Next Week:
We will finish with Mamaโs Window and begin our final story of the year โTrombone Shorty.โ In this autobiography we will read about the real life of trombone player Troy โTrombone Shortyโ Andrews. During our reading we will determine the authorโs purpose for writing this text. We will also incorporate jazz music and culture of New Orleans into our reading. Students will have an opportunity to create their own blues song. We will have our final word study of the year, stable syllables.
Math Updates:
In math, scholars will take their Division, Topic 5 Assessment next week. Please check your child's agenda book for their specific date. Next week, we will be practicing for MCAP and look out for a MCAP practice packet to be sent home. We are also strengthening math literacy through Daily Reviews, problem-solving tasks, and math journals, which allow students to reflect on their thinking and analyze mistakes.
Parents can support learning at home by encouraging scholars to:
Explain how they solved a problem (not just the answer)
Practice multiplication facts regularly
Complete assigned IXL skills that reinforce division concepts.
Science Updates:
In science, scholars are exploring the unit Human Uses of Energy. We will be completing this unit.
Students are learning how energy plays an important role in our everyday lives and how humans harness different energy sources to power technology and systems we depend on.
Topics we are exploring include:
Types of energy
How energy is transferred and used
Real-world examples of energy in transportation, electricity, and machines
How energy systems help communities function
Scholars are also engaging in research-based activities and project tasks where they apply math skills such as division, measurement, and data interpretation to scientific situations.
This interdisciplinary approach helps scholars see how math and science work together in real-world problem solving.
๐ก Skills We Are Building
Across both subjects, scholars are developing important academic habits including:
Perseverance when solving challenging problems
Explaining and defending their thinking
Collaborating with peers
Using academic vocabulary
Applying knowledge to real-world situations
๐ Helpful Reminders for Families
Please encourage your scholar to:
Check Canvas regularly for assignments and resources
Complete IXL practice to reinforce skills
Bring their math journal to class daily

Social Studies Updates:
This week, students read Chapter 4, Lesson 3, which explores global trade and how the exchange of goods and services between countries impacts their everyday lives. Students will learn how products they useโsuch as food, clothing, and technologyโoften come from different parts of the world, and they will examine how trade connects communities across the globe.
Next week, students will prepare for their QUEST project by developing a detailed business plan that outlines their product or service, target audience, pricing, budgeting, and marketing ideas. Students will use creativity, planning, and problem-solving skills to organize and present their ideas effectively.
