The SMS Press
April 18 2024
Remember, there is NO SCHOOL on Friday the 19th.
Classes will resume on Monday the 22nd with a B Day.
Have a good weekend!
Earth Day is April 22, 2025!
What do Earth Day and Mental Wellness have in common? Everything! According to the American Psychological Association (APA), “From a stroll through a city park to a day spent hiking in the wilderness, exposure to nature has been linked to a host of benefits, including improved attention, lower stress, better mood, reduced risk of psychiatric disorders and even upticks in empathy and cooperation. Most research so far has focused on green spaces such as parks and forests, and researchers are now also beginning to study the benefits of blue spaces, places with river and ocean views. But nature comes in all shapes and sizes, and psychological research is still fine-tuning our understanding of its potential benefits. In the process, scientists are charting a course for policymakers and the public to better tap into the healing powers of Mother Nature” (2020)
During Spartan Start next week our students will play Nature Bingo. Students will spend time filling out a BINGO card with things they might see, hear, smell, feel, or touch when outside on a walk. Then they will take their BINGO card outside to experience these things “in real life”!! It is a delight to see middle schoolers outside playing. Even our “big kids heading to high school” become playful and fun! Dedicate some time this week to take in the beauty of our community. Take a walk on one of our many trails, play at one of our beautiful parks, visit WI point and walk the beach, take the dog for a long, long walk, or simply lay or sit outside on lawn furniture. Close your eyes, take deep breaths and just be in that moment. Your mind, body and spirit will thank you! Be well :)
Students and staff are having a blast throwing it back to 2003 today! Our next dress up day will be Freaky Friday, April 26th.
Attendance Matters!
Class starts each day with students in classrooms by 7:55am. The warning bell rings at 7:50am. To see if your child has been tardy to any of their classes, check PowerSchool to view your child’s attendance. If you see any errors, please contact Ms. Charity.
**Our school day ends at 3:06pm. Unless your student is registered for an after school activity, they must leave the building by 3:30pm.**

Healthy Minute: Teamwork, Community, Accountability
Healthy habits are the pillars to a healthy lifestyle. Joining after school programs such as sports, clubs, intramurals etc. help to keep your body active and your mind engaged. It is important to have a feeling of belonging, to have a team to show up for, to hold yourself accountable. There are days when we don't always want to go to sports practice, to perform in our band/choir concert, or to go to our after school club or intramurals. But what is important to remember is that you are starting the building blocks for your future, now, as a Middle School student. How you show up for yourself and for others shows your character and builds a confident lifestyle. It’s a good healthy habit to begin at a young age!

Makers Night set for April 24th - REGISTER!
On Wednesday, April 24th we will be hosting Makers Night!
What is "Makers Night"? You will work with a team, and one or two SHS Golf players to create a mini golf putting hole made of cardboard and recycled materials. We provide you with a big pile of cardboard, tools, glue, tape, and other fun building materials. You will have a time limit to plan and create your course. Then each team will go around and play and score. Teams will receive prize trophies made by our SMS 8th Grade STEM class. Dinner is also included!
This event is FREE, but we ask you REGISTER VIA THIS LINK so we can prepare for supplies and dinner.
Special thanks to the SHS golf teams and SMS STEM class for partnering with us on this fun family event! We are also very excited to have Spartan Manufacturing on board to create a bonus course. We can't wait to see what they come up with!
Teacher Appreciation Week: May 6-10
We will be helping celebrate our SMS teachers and staff during national Teacher Appreciation Week May 6th-10th. We will be putting together a variety of prize baskets for staff to do a drawing during this week. Do you know an individual or a business who would like to donate a prize basket or gift cards to show their appreciation? Contact SHS Family Engagement Coordinator, LeAnn Egnash, at leann.egnash@superior.k12.wi.us for details.
The PTSA also have a variety of donation needs to make that week special for the 220+ teachers between the two schools.
There are two ways you can help!
*Click here to give a monetary donation and they'll do the shopping.
*Click here to sign up to bring items. We are asking for donations to be delivered the day before the planned event to allow the PTSA board time to evaluate totals and complete additional shopping if necessary.

Summer School
Summer School registration is OPEN, and we would love to welcome all our Spartans to a summer of fun! In the Check out the summer school webpage for details and to sign up your student.
This year, we will host four locations (Cooper, Northern Lights, Superior Middle School, and Superior High School). SHS will begin classes on June 10th, while the rest of the district will start on June 17th.
Along with the many classes offered at our schools, we have partnered with the City of Superior Parks and Recreation Department which offers outdoor playground programs throughout the area. Of course, these programs depend on if the weather cooperates. In preparation for the 2024 season, the Parks and Recreation program is asking our Spartan community to fill out this brief survey for location preferences.
The Summer Playground Program is a weather-dependent program scheduled from 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, starting in the middle of June and ending in the middle of August. The program's goal is to provide supervised play and outdoor fun in a safe environment for children ages 5-11 in Superior.
