ALGEBRA
MATH 8
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
We have reached the end of the 1st quarter, and our students have done a remarkable job. Fresh off the completion of our post-fitness test assessment, many students have made outstanding progress since the beginning of the quarter.
Strength Training Program – students completed their 5-week Strength Training Program and again saw many students improve their strengths and techniques.
Health – Towards the end the quarter, students learned about the nervous system and how it controls all the body’s actions and jobs. We also learned about our immune system and the combination of body defenses made up of the cells, tissues, and organs that fight pathogens in the body.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Students have finished up their unit on the United States, as well as how our government is laid out and runs. We will be moving into different countries of North America, such as Canada and Mexico. We will look at how these countries were established, how their governments are ran, their economies, and how their daily lives are/aren’t different from ours in America.
PAES LAB
Students will be completing a workplace interest survey upon completion of the quarter. They have been exposed to many different types of jobs in 5 different career areas. Please ask them which department was their most favorite, least favorite and how many total jobs they completed out of 264 possibilities. I will miss this crew! We have shared laughs, learning and had a great kick off to our 8th grade school year.
ART
We are reaching the end of our quarter, and the students have done some amazing things. They have learned about the principles of design, created a 3D zentangle design on coffee cups, painted mini canvases and so much more. They just completed their unit on clay. The project ideas ranged from chess pieces, to minions, and even to the world cup. The students then had the opportunity to either paint their projects or use glaze to make it food safe. We are wrapping up our quarter by doing the loved tradition of painting ceiling tiles. This is the students final mark on the school. They are able to paint the tile however they please and then they will gift it to a teacher of their choice. This has been something for the students to look forward to since they first stepped foot in this building, and I am so excited to see what they create. These students have been great artist all quarter and I can't wait to see where life takes them.
LANGUAGE ARTS
8th graders are wrapping up their study of plot and conflict and are beginning to focus on character analysis and point of view. We continue to work on our writing skills using the R.A.C.E. strategy for strong analysis and paragraph structure. Students have enjoyed reading Raymond’s Run, a short story about Squeaky, a spunky young girl who learns there’s more to life than winning a race for pride or honor. Rather, taking pride in helping others who have greater need and seeing the good in others has its own rewards.
SCIENCE
Students have learned about all forms of energy and ways that we can power Marshall using various forms of energy. We then moved into the unit of waves and electromagnetic radiation in which students learned about how waves are a part of our every day life. Moving into the Electricity unit, students will have the opportunity to learn about series & parallel circuits, how electrical energy and create their own!
SPANISH
In Spanish, we are finishing up our novel, El capibara con botas. Students have used the super seven verbs (ir, tener, hay, estar, gustar, ser, and querer) along with cognates and new vocabulary to complete a variety of activities related to the novel. Ask your student to share a little bit about Carlos’s adventures with you! 😊 We will wrap up this unit and finish the quarter with a mini unit on the Day of the Dead.
