Westchester Weekly

News from the Principal
Greetings, WE Families,
This has been another terrific week at Westchester. Everyone is certainly settling into the school routines. Crew meetings are going well. The students are building strong relationships with each other and their teachers.
A special thank you for our additions to the playground. We appreciate your work and support for our playground.
Thomas Moore - Mr. Moore has painted and replaced our basketball goals.
Ryan Wingfield (former Wolf) - As his Eagle Scout project, Ryan led a group of volunteers to build new picnic tables for our playground.
We have extended our car rider lane further down the parking lot. When you arrive first in the morning or afternoon, please pull all the way down so we can get the buses and cars off Scott Blvd.
I would like to encourage students to apply for the 2026-2027 Superintendent's Student Advisory Council. This is an opportunity for two of our students to represent our school and participate with other students in a discussion with Dr. Whitaker. Counting Collections
Dear WE Families,
We are beginning a fun and foundational math routine called Counting Collections, and we need your help! This routine is designed to help students build strong number sense, learn efficient counting strategies, and develop important early math skills.
What is the Counting Collections routine?
Students work in pairs to explore a baggie filled with a collection of objects. They will:
- Count the items to find out "how many".
- Practice grouping objects into sets (e.g., ones, twos, fives, or tens).
- Draw a picture and write numbers on a recording sheet to show how they counted their items.
What can I add to our Counting Collection?
We would love for each child to bring in a small collection of items from their home. Please place the items in a gallon-sized ziploc bag. Some great items to include:
- Small shells
- Small toy cars
- Buttons
- Blocks
- Beads
- Pasta
- Pennies, dimes or nickels
- Cotton balls
How many items should go in the bag?
Please make sure everything fits easily into the bag.
We look forward to seeing the treasures your child brings in and the exciting ways they count them!
Thank you for your support!
Mrs. Manasso, Westchester Instructional Coach (cmanasso@csdecatur.net)
