The History Day Showcase was amazing!

On Friday, March 6, seventy-eight amazing WHS humanities students presented 39 incredible History Day projects to judges in the Whetstone HS Library. Students were free to select their own topics which included Rosie the Riveter, Didier Drogba, Psycho (the movie), the 1888 Matchgirls Strike, the World Wide Web, and many more. Students displayed their ability to research, cite sources, and develop written, oral, and multimedia presentations. Check out some photos below!

Digital Media Literacy

Screen Time isn't the problem - Filling the Digital Literacy gap

Preparing kids for the current and future media ecosystem - all sorts of digital media, including television, the internet, social media, video games, and interactive assistants - is more important than ever.

Read this recent report revealing what kids need: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/raising-humans-in-a-digital-world/202602/screen-time-isnt-the-problem.

And check out this article and interview with WHS librarian Hannah Green about how some Ohio schools are filling digital literacy gaps that go beyond books, serving as community spaces and helping students build digital literacy skills: https://app.publicnewsservice.org/story/ohio-school-libraries-fill-digital-literacy-gap-1/adc1e0c6-81a2-406d-8175-5d046774d3d4

College Board Updates

Attention families of students in Cohort 2029 and Cohort 2027:

To ensure your student is fully prepared for upcoming assessments and college readiness activities through the College Board, please have your student update the College Board app on their school-issued Chromebook as soon as possible.

Keeping the app updated is essential for:

  • Smooth access to testing tools

  • Avoiding login or technical issues

  • Ensuring compatibility with upcoming assessments

Students can complete the update directly through their Chromebook. Students do not need to log in to their Chromebook. They will click on APPS in the bottom left corner and select Bluebook. Once the screen loads, the application is successfully updated. If your student experiences any issues during the update process, please contact Mrs. Lewis in Room 210.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this important update and for helping us keep our students prepared and ready!

Athletic Booster Opportunities!

Some of our volunteers will no longer have students at Whetstone next year, so we need your help to continue to make our great Athletic Boosters programs possible. We are looking for people to fill the following roles:

Chair, Senior Awards Committee - This person will lead the program that awards scholarships to graduating athletes. Duties are primarily confined to a few months in the Spring.
  • Recruit a committee to score applications using a rubric
  • Update the application and deadlines, promote the opportunity, monitor submissions
  • Compile applications and remove the candidate names for the committee's review
  • Compile committee scores; prepare for honoree announcement in May

Chair, Concessions - This person will ensure the concession stand is stocked and staffed for sales at home football games and basketball games. There is also occasional work for special events in the Spring. Concession sales are our largest revenue generator, so it is imperative that we fill this role to be able to continue to support our athletics programs.
  • Monitor inventory and purchase items needed for concession sales
  • Create/update Signup Genius for volunteers to staff concession stand
  • Coordinate opening/closing of stand and train volunteers in their duties (Athletic Boosters officers help with this, as well)

Chair, Senior Banners - This person will coordinate team photos and the production of banners for our senior athletes. Duties are performed for all sports seasons but only require a few days of work per season.
  • Coordinate with Athletic Director and photographer to capture senior and team photos
  • Verify seniors' preferred names and spellings for banner production
  • Assist with setup, props, and directing student athletes on picture days
  • Organize digital photo files from photographer and send to banner vendor
  • Proof banners, pickup from local vendor, deliver to school

You are welcome to share/split the duties of any of these roles with a friend or partner. Interested or have questions? Please join us at our next meeting. Can't make the meeting? No problem! Please reach out to Athletic Boosters president, Jill Langhals, at 419-348-3709.

Thank you for your support!

The Spongebob Musical

  • Friday & Saturday, March 27 & 28, 2026
  • 7:00 PM 9:00 PM
  • WAPA Performing Arts Center

Plunge into this stunning all-singing, all-dancing, dynamic stage show! When the citizens of Bikini Bottom discover that a volcano will soon erupt and destroy their humble home, SpongeBob and his friends must come together to save the fate of their undersea world. With lives hanging in the balance and all hope lost, a most unexpected hero rises up. The power of optimism really can save the world!

The SpongeBob Musical is based on the beloved animated series created by Stephen Hillenburg and features a book by Kyle Jarrow, with original songs by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alexander Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady A, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants and T.I., and songs by David Bowie, Tom Kenny and Andy Paley. Additional lyrics are by Jonathan Coulton, with additional music by Tom Kitt. The musical production was conceived by Tina Landau.

An exciting new musical featuring irresistible characters and magical music, this deep-sea pearl of a show is set to make a splash with audiences young and old. The future is bright, the future is bold, the future is The SpongeBob Musical.

Tickets on Sale NOW at https://www.wapa.net/performances-gashZ

The Spongebob Musical - HELP!

SpongeBob the Musical is upon us and we need lots of help the night of each performance to ensure things run smoothly. Last year we sold over 1800 tickets across the four shows. We are already at 640 tickets sold so this year we might set a new record.

The concessions for the four musical performances is typically our second largest fundraiser we have each year behind the Fall Booster drive. These funds support all of the WAPA programs so please see the sign up below and help where you can.

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0E49ADAA22A13-62912859-concessions

There are also a couple slots open to help with theater meals for the long practices they have this week and next. A bunch on hangry students, (and adults for that matter), aren’t very productive so these light meals help get them through the night.

WAPA Booster Opportunities!

Looking ahead to next year, we will need to backfill several roles within the WAPA Boosters. Please seriously consider taking on one of these positions. Without the necessary parental support, WAPA programs and the opportunities for our students will be scaled back if not eliminated. Key needs for next year include:

  • Treasurer: This is a roll that takes about 5 hours a month but is mostly done at home with a flexible schedule. Colleen has things well organized and there will be plenty of support to get a new person up to speed. WAPA literally cannot exist without a treasurer. I know that sounds a little dramatic, but ALL finances flow through the WAPA Boosters, not through the school. If something costs money, (i.e. play rights, set cost, instrument repair, choir robe dry cleaning, etc.) WAPA Boosters writes the check to pay for it.
  • Marching Band Uniforms: This is a short lived but critical role that is primarily in August and July as we ramp up for the marching band season.
  • Coordinators for Fall Mum Sale, Winter Greenery Sale, and Spring Plant Sale. These can be done by three different coordinators, or one person can take on all three.
  • Scholarship: Coordinate the WAPA Scholarship process in the Spring
  • Sponsorship: Coordinate and track our individual and corporate sponsors throughout the year

For any of these roles you will have plenty of support and knowledge to be transferred to help you get up to speed. I promise you will not be thrown into the deep end of the pool without a life jacket. If you would like to learn more about any of these rolls please reach out to Brad Phillips or Colleen Rogers directly or through wapaboosters@gmail.com.

WHS - Transportation to Nationwide Children’s Hospital

Whetstone Parents: Did you know that there are Nationwide Children’s Hospital doctor’s offices inside several Columbus City Schools? Your child can be seen during school hours for well visits, vaccines and many more services! Unfortunately, Whetstone currently does not have a school-based clinic, but we offer transportation to one! Our students are transported once a month to the NCH school-based health clinic at Columbus International High School. NCH is even working on getting transportation for Whetstone students to be seen at their Fort Hayes clinic where they provide vision services (exams & glasses).

Setting up an appointment requires 2 steps:

1. Alert Nurse Nancy that you are interested in having your child seen at a SBHC so I can arrange transportation from Whetstone High School.

2. Call (614) 355-2590 (option 3) to register for an appointment.

Visit https://www.nationwidechildrens.org/specialties/school-health-services and see the flyer for much more info, and reach out to Nurse Nancy if you have any questions! 614-365-6060.
