Principal's Message
Dear NISL Families,
At NISL, we believe that helping students build a strong sense of self-worth is essential to their personal and academic growth and vital to our school mission of holistic education. The first unit of the Positive Action curriculum focused on the topic of self-concept. Coach Nouna taught students that self-concept—how they view themselves and their unique qualities—shapes their confidence, motivation, and overall well-being. Central to this unit is the Thoughts-Actions-Feelings Circle—a powerful concept that teaches students how their thoughts, actions, and feelings are all connected and work together to shape a positive self-concept.
The importance of self-worth and kindness is deeply rooted in our deen. In Islam, we are reminded to view ourselves and others through a lens of compassion and positivity. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, “None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself” (Sahih al-Bukhari). This teaches us to approach both others and ourselves with kindness and understanding. Here are some ways to extend this practice of positive self-concept and self-compassion at home:
In Islam, we are reminded to view ourselves and others through a lens of compassion and positivity. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, “None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself” (Sahih al-Bukhari). This hadith encourages kindness and positivity toward others, which begins with a positive attitude toward ourselves. Here are some ways to continue reinforcing these lessons at home:
- Encourage Positive Self-Talk: Remind your child to speak kindly to themselves. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim). Teaching children to speak good about themselves and about others helps foster a positive self-concept and encourages gratitude for Allah’s blessings.
- Celebrate Their Unique Qualities: Each child is created with purpose and unique strengths. Celebrate these qualities with your child, reminding them of the hadith, “Allah does not look at your appearance or wealth, but rather He looks at your hearts and actions” (Sahih Muslim). This teaches them that self-worth is found in their character, good intentions, and actions, not just external achievements.
- Model Self-Respect and Self-Care: Show your child the importance of respecting oneself as an amanah (trust) from Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, “Indeed, your own self has rights over you” (Sahih al-Bukhari). Practicing self-care and self-respect demonstrates how to value ourselves as creations of Allah, and it sets a positive example for our children.
- Encourage Goal-Setting and Reflection: Setting goals and reflecting on progress builds confidence and encourages self-awareness. After achieving something, encourage your child to thank Allah SWT and recognize their growth. Remind them of the verse, “And He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the favor of Allah, you could not enumerate them” (Quran 14:34). This helps them stay grateful for their abilities, growth, and blessings.
Self-concept is a lifelong journey, and your encouragement at home helps strengthen the foundation we’re building at school. By guiding your child to see themselves positively and understand their worth, we can help them become confident, resilient, and ready for life’s challenges.
Thank you for partnering with us to support your child’s development.
