A Letter from Our Principal

Dear Families

As part of Hozho Academy's mission statement, we develop the principle of civic virtue in our students. This means we educate the students about the political process and the roles of citizens once they become adults. We teach students about political philosophy, ideas, trends, as well as important documents which outline our rights and responsibilities.

During assembly, we have been identifying our local, state and federal leaders and the candidates who are running for those positions. We tried to arrange an all-candidate night here at the school so that students and families could meet the candidates from both parties. We were not able to line anyone up for that date we selected. Another local group asked to use the gym if they could get some candidates to come. It's rare to have federal level candidates visit Gallup, so we allowed this organization to use the gym. This was not a Hozho event. It was a community service to allow the gym to be a venue. We would do the same for the opposing political organization as well, but none have asked.

The school is not advocating, endorsing or supporting any candidates. I have asked our staff members to keep their personal opinions about the candidates and political issues to themselves. However, I encourage all of our families to have discussions with your children about your views.

We do not have school on election day, November 5th, so that families can focus on the important task of voting. Freedom is fragile and not guaranteed. Many have sacrificed and died to secure this freedom. Voting honors that sacrifice. Let's work together to make sure Hozho students understand how important it is that we all do our part as "we the people...".

This week the fourth grade worked on Celtic knot work. Students are learning about medieval history in their homeroom. Therefore, in art class, they have been studying Anglo-Saxon and Celtic knot work and illuminated manuscripts. A week ago, students learned how to make a Trinity knot. This week we made a new design that was much more difficult and the kids loved it.

The fifth-grade students are learning about Renaissance art. A very important figure in the Renaissance is a man named Filippo Brunelleschi. He is the one who developed a system for linear perspective. Fifth grade is learning how to draw linear perspective drawings. It is very exciting to make realistic perspective on paper.

Kindergarten: Emotion Management

Your kindergartner is learning to use clues, including looking at a person’s face and body and what’s going on, to recognize 3 common feelings— happy, sad, and mad. Toward the end of the unit, they also become familiar with slow breathing as a way to help themselves feel calm when they experience strong emotions.

Why is it important? Research shows that children who learn the skills in this unit are more likely to:

  • Be better learners

  • Build stronger relationships

  • Have higher self-esteem

  • Be better problem-solvers

Practice at Home

What to Look For: Notice and praise your child when they recognize and label feelings—their own and other people’s—or use clues to guess how someone else is feeling. You can say, “It does look like that person feels mad. Good job paying attention to their face and body and what’s going on!”

Discuss: A few times a week, ask your child, “When did you see someone who looked happy today? When did you see someone who looked sad? How did you know they felt that way? A few times a week, ask your child, “When did you feel mad or sad today? What did you do to feel calm?”

Practice: After your child has learned slow breathing at school, practice with them. Take a deep breath through your nose, hold it for a moment, then slowly release it through your mouth.
