The Weekly Update #4

Help Needed
Safety is our number one priority for our students and staff! We need your help keeping our Bear Family safe. Here's how you can do your part:
Arrival and Dismissal
- Wait patiently at the "line starts here" signs in the front and back parking lots at arrival and dismissal until waived forward (7:30 am and 3:17 pm)
- Drop students off at 7:30 or later when supervision is provided
- Please display your family number in the car rider lines
Attendance
- Our official attendance time is 9:15 a.m. Students are counted absent if they arrive after 9:15. Please make sure your Bear is at school before this time. If your child has a doctor's appointment, please provide the doctor's note. This allows your Bear to be counted as present! Attendance is crucial to academic success!
Attendance Matters!
Starting as early as preschool and kindergarten, regular attendance is essential for students gaining the academic and social skills they need to thrive. Research shows that when students are chronically absent (missing 10% or more of the school year or 18 days over an entire school year), they are less likely to read proficiently by third grade, achieve in middle school and graduate from high school.
In addition to the well-publicized learning losses, students also lost opportunities to develop socially and gain skills in problem-solving and self-regulation, all which are needed to grow and learn.
Since the pandemic, national data shows chronic absence almost doubled from 8 million in 2018-19 to 14.7 million students nationwide in 2021-22. That’s one out of three students. Absenteeism has surged among all student groups, at every economic level. Black, Latino, and Native American students, students living in poverty, students with disabilities and English language learners have been especially affected. Available state data from 2022-23 shows only a slight decrease.
Without efforts to reduce chronic absence, education investments designed to improve students’ academic and social losses will miss their mark.
We can nurture a culture of engagement and attendance at school. This starts by helping everyone in the community – families, elected officials, businesses, nonprofits, religious leaders and more – recognize they have a stake and a role, because schools certainly can’t do it alone. We all prosper when children and youth, regardless of their race, ethnicity, neighborhood, family income or disability status, have the opportunity to gain skills and abilities that prepare them for success in school, work and life.

Did You Know?
Dated health care appointment notes allow the school to mark your child present if they attended any part of the school day, such as before or after their appointment.
When students stay in school until 10 a.m. (Elementary) or 10:40 a.m. (Middle School), it ensures the school receives full funding for the day. Your support in ensuring your child’s attendance not only helps them academically, but also boosts the school’s success.
Thank you for partnering with us to provide the best educational experience for our students. For more information, please visit Important Attendance Information for Parents or view the Attendance Reminders for Elementary & Middle School flyer.
NURSE NOTES
Hey Bears! Here are a few clinic reminders!
Illness Info:
We need your help in maintaining a healthy environment for your children as well as the other children in our school. In an effort to avoid students in the clinic feeling ill first thing in the morning, please use the following guidelines when determining whether or not to send your child to school. Your child is missing valuable class time by being in the clinic if he or she is ill. If you have any questions about whether or not to send your child to school, please call the clinic.
If your student exhibits any of the following conditions, it is recommended they stay home:Temperature of 100 ºFahrenheit or higher – measured without fever suppressing medication within the past 24 hours.
Vomiting in the past 24 hours
Diarrhea in past 24 hours (can return diarrhea free without diarrhea-suppressing medications for at least 24 hours)
Persistent, hacking cough
Continually runny nose with white, green, or yellow mucus
Eyes that appear swollen, red, and weeping
Strep throat - may return 24-48 hours after the antibiotic is started and fever has subsided per provider instructions.
Rash of unknown cause anywhere on the body
Scabies – exclude until treatment has begun
Absences:
Please call 281-641-1619, email Mr.Kuchta, or complete the BBE Absence google doc as soon as possible to report your child's absence. When your child returns to school, please send a note to excuse your child. If your child has an appointment with a health care provider, always get a school note from them.
Nutrition and Hydration:
** It is vital for your child to get plenty of rest and eat a nutritious breakfast in order to function at their best every day. They should also bring healthy snacks in class and a water bottle to refill throughout the school day to stay hydrated to prevent headache and stomach aches.**
Items must be clearly labeled with the student’s name in legible handwriting.
No sharing between students is allowed.
Aerosols or pumps are not allowed to be applied indoors due to the potential adverse effect on others in the vicinity during application.
Elementary students should have parent/guardian permission for these items confirmed by their teacher.
All students should be able to self apply.
Bathroom, cafeteria, and playground accidents happen occasionally. Please keep a change of clothes in their backpacks, especially our K-2 Bears.
The clinic is always in need of donations, especially BOYS size 5/6 and 7/8 elastic shorts and new underwear!
Thank you for keeping our Bears healthy!
