Together We Rise: Updates from the Principal

8/29/2025

A Message from Dr. Delgado

We are now fully into the swing of the school year, and it has been inspiring to see our students settling into routines, working hard in the classroom, and already showing their Wildcat pride. As we head into the long weekend, I want to wish you and your loved ones a safe and restful Labor Day holiday. May it be a time well spent with family and friends.

Next week brings even more excitement as we kick off our athletic games and work toward theater tryouts. These opportunities give our students a chance to shine beyond the classroom, and we look forward to cheering them on as they pursue their passions and talents.

As a reminder, consistent attendance is one of the most important keys to student success. While we understand that students may occasionally feel under the weather, we ask that absences be reserved for times when they are truly ill. This helps students stay engaged in their learning while also helping prevent the spread of germs. Please keep in mind that state law requires students to attend at least 90% of school days. Missing more than 10 class periods may result in truancy referrals or even the possibility of being held back.

Thank you for partnering with us to make every day of learning count. Together, we are building strong habits, meaningful connections, and an incredible school year ahead.

New Cell Phone/Personal Device Policy! New Cell Phone/Personal Device Policy!

Student Personal Device Guidelines

During the state’s 2025 legislative session, lawmakers passed and Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law a bill that prohibits students from using personal devices during school hours.

House Bill 1481 takes effect the 2025-2026 school year and requires all Texas school districts to prohibit students from using "personal wireless communication devices," which the law defines as β€œany wireless electronic communication device, other than a device provided to students by a school for instructional purposes, capable of transmitting and/or receiving data.”

What Devices are Restricted:

  • Personal cell phones

  • Tablets

  • Gaming devices

  • Smart watches

  • Bluetooth headphones or earbuds

  • Fitness trackers that can send or receive messages

  • Personal computers not being used for instructional purposes

  • Two-way radios

  • Pagers

  • Any other device capable of digital communication.

What Devices are Allowed:

Devices purchased and issued by Pflugerville ISD are exempt from this restriction.

What this means for Pflugerville ISD:

  • Students are expected to either leave personal communication devices at home or power them off and store them securely in their backpacks during the day. Device use is not permitted at any time during school hours, which includes passing periods and lunch times.

  • Exceptions will be made for documented medical needs and special education accommodations. (Families who wish to request this exception should work directly with their campus nurse or administrator)

PfISD leaders understand this is a big change for our students and families, and have developed a phased-in approach to help students and families adjust.

During the first nine weeks of school, we’ll focus on education and grace. Students will receive reminders, and staff will take time to explain the new expectations. Each campus will have a designated point person to help guide this transition, and families will receive information through school emails, newsletters, websites, and social media.

During this transition phase, the consequences for cell phone use will be progressive. Once we’ve given students time to learn the expectations, enforcement will shift to immediate and progressive consequences without verbal warnings.

The law is designed to support student learning, reduce distractions, and limit the potential for cyberbullying. To help students adjust, families are encouraged to speak with their students about this change and perhaps consider practicing being device-free at home.

Phase 1: Transition Period (August 13-September 18)

1st Offense: Verbal Reminder

2nd Offense: Device confiscated and returned at the end of the day.

3rd Offense: Device only returned to parent or guardian.

Chronic Issues: Parent meeting and progressive discipline.

Phase 2: Full Implementation (September 19-end of the year)

1st Offense: Device confiscated and returned only to parent/guardian.

2nd Offense: Confiscation and lunch detention.

3rd Offense: Confiscation plus half-day of ISS and a parent meeting.

Chronic Issues: Full day of ISS, behavior plan, or temporary ban of the device on campus.

Are You or Your Student Learning English?

For students who are learning English, turning on English subtitles when watching TV shows or videos is a great way to improve language skills. Seeing the words while hearing them helps with vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. Encourage your child to try this at home... it will make a difference!

The first interim grading period will close on Friday, August 29th at 4:30 p.m. This is an important milestone for our Wildcats, especially those participating in UIL activities such as athletics, fine arts, and other competitions.

  • Gaining Eligibility: Students may become eligible to participate in UIL activities based on their interim grades.

  • Losing Eligibility: Students will not lose eligibility until the next 3-week progress report.

We encourage all families to partner with us in keeping students on track. Please check grades regularly in the Parent Portal and support your student in completing assignments and preparing for assessments. Staying on top of academic progress helps prevent both loss of eligibility and setbacks in class performance.

Together, we can ensure every student stays focused, eligible, and successful!

🎟️ Student ID Badges

By the end of this week, all students will have received their student ID badges! We are excited to take this important step in keeping Westview a safe and welcoming place for everyone.

Students are expected to wear their ID badges every day. This helps us quickly identify who belongs on campus and ensures that our school remains a secure environment for learning.

We appreciate your support in reminding your student to wear their ID badge each dayβ€”it’s a simple habit that makes a big difference in keeping our Wildcat community safe!

Restroom Use During Class Time

We ask for your support in helping students value their instructional time. Restroom breaks during class should be limited to emergencies only. Each student is allotted six restroom passes per six weeks for use during class time.

As a reminder, we have increased our passing periods to four minutes to give students more time to use the restroom between classes. Students may also use the restroom during lunch, before school, and after school.

Please encourage your student to make the most of their class time by avoiding unnecessary restroom trips during instructional periods.

⏰ Tardy Policy Update

Beginning next week, Westview will be enforcing our tardy policy to ensure students are in class on time and ready to learn.

βœ… Clean Slate: All students will begin Monday with a clean slate for tardies when it comes to consequences. This means any tardies up to this point will not count toward consequences.

βš–οΈ Consequences: Starting Monday, tardies will result in consequences according to the chart below:

We ask for your support in helping students understand the importance of being in class on time. Arriving promptly ensures that no learning is missed and sets the tone for a productive day. Together, we can build positive habits that prepare students for success in school and beyond.
