FRESHMAN BARBECUE AUGUST 25 6-8 PM
If your student will be new to MHS this fall, please plan to attend the Freshman Barbecue. This is a fun evening designed for families. We invite all adults who support new students to attend!
In addition to a great burger buffet, parents and guardians will have a chance to meet some of the freshman teachers and support staff, to tour the building, and to visit information booths.
Meanwhile, students will meet upperclass mentors, will visit the classrooms on their schedule so they will know where to go on the first day, and will enjoy the burger buffet with old and new friends.
After the barbecue, everyone is invited to an outdoor movie on Alumni Field. Grab some blankets and some bugspray, and enjoy a great summer evening outdoors with friends and families!
BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT
We hope to see everyone beginning at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, September 9. Back to School Night is a great opportunity to meet your student's teachers and to connect with other parents, as the various parent organizations will be here to share their plans for the school year.
After some brief introductions in the Auditorium, we will be moving through all seven blocks of the schedule, so that families can visit each class. Teachers will present their syllabus, their curriculum, and their expectations. They will also introduce any special big projects that the students will complete this year. Please come prepared to jot down each teacher's email address; email is the easiest way for teachers to communicate with families. Administrators and School Counselors will be available in the office all evening, and our students will act as tour guides. Please plan to attend!!!
JOIN THE STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAC)
All students in grades 9-12 are invited to join the Student Advisory Committee (SAC). The SAC is a group of students who actively advise the principals, the superintendent, and the Maynard School Committee. If you want to shape the future of MHS, and make the school even better for all students, this is the committee for you!
Each Tuesday, the group meets during a different academic block (if that teacher allows). Each week, we discuss student concerns and questions. Administrators also often ask the committee for feedback on their plans. Another important SAC responsibility is writing the Student Report, which is an important part of every School Committee meeting.
If you are looking to get involved in a group that meets during the school day, and that really makes a difference, please consider joining SAC! Look for an email during the first days of school, or let Mrs. York or Ms. Doktorov know you are interested!
APPLY FOR THE MASSACHUSETTS YOUTH CLIMATE COUNCIL
The Youth Climate Council was established by Governor Healey to engage young people in shaping climate policy and building more resilient communities across our state. The Council advises both the Governor and the Office of Climate Innovation and Resilience on important climate-related initiatives and solutions. The Office of Climate Innovation and Resilience is now accepting applications for the next cohort of the Youth Climate Council. This is a valuable opportunity for students who are passionate about climate action and want to make a difference. Youth can learn more and apply online by Monday, September 1.
ALL ARE WELCOME ON THE SCHOOL COUNCIL
Students, teachers, family members, and interested community members are invited to join the Maynard High School School Council. We meet at 4:00 PM on the last Tuesday of almost every month during the school year, in person with a virtual option. Be the first to know about budget, handbook, and policy issues. Help us shape the School Improvement Plan. Make a difference in one short hour each month!
Please email Principal York at eyork@maynard.k12.ma.us if you are interested in joining us. Our first meeting is planned for September 30 at 4:00 PM, and we look forward to seeing you then!!!
TIGER DAYS
As you read through our calendar, you may have noticed a new entry for "Tiger Days". This school year, the MHS faculty is piloting a special schedule once in every seven-day rotation. These days will be used for many purposes:
- Advisory (our regular Advisory that we know and love)
- Class Meetings
- Vision of the Graduate Portfolio
- Special Assemblies
- Extra Help/Study Hall
Rather than missing class time, we will now have a special time in place for these activities, and more. This is just a pilot, so be ready to give us feedback about whether it is working! Check your first day of school packet for Tiger Day plans and schedules.
HOMECOMING WEEKEND STARTS SEPTEMBER 26
There is no high school tradition quite like Homecoming! We are planning a full weekend of home games, kicked off by a pep rally and a Friday evening dance for the students. We hope that everyone in the Maynard High School community comes out to support our Tigers!!! Let's Gooooo!!!!!
SUMMER READING
Have you read a good book or two this summer? There's still time!
Each of our English teachers expects you to read this summer. It needs to be a book you haven't read before, and it needs to be appropriate for a student your age. Fiction, non-fiction, e-reader, audiobook -- it doesn't matter. Just read a book (or two, if you are taking Honors English).
For specific instructions on how to find a good book, document your summer reading, and complete the extra assignments for honors classes, please click on the teacher for your grade:
Grade 9 -- Ms. Steigerwald, Ms. Wadland
Grade 10 -- Ms.Wadland
Grade 11 -- Ms. Gerondeau
Grade 12 -- Mr. Luther, Ms. Gerondeau
