Must-Read Books on Artificial Intelligence

It was June 1816, the “Year Without a Summer.” Mary Shelley and her future husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley, were visiting friends, including renowned poet Lord Byron, at the Villa Diodati by Lake Geneva in the Swiss Alps. Although summer, the day was rainy and cold, so the group gathered around a fire in the villa and amused themselves by reading German ghost stories. Byron proposed that they each write a ghost story, and a monster was born.

In the introduction to her 1831 edition of Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, Shelley wrote “Frightful must it be; for supremely frightful would be the effect of any human endeavour to mock the stupendous mechanism of the Creator of the world.” The novel raises an enduring question: what ethical, societal, and human implications arise when people create artificial life? Today, this issue lies at the heart of ongoing discussions about artificial intelligence. If the recent Hugging Face incident raised concerns for you regarding artificial intelligence and the possibilities, both fascinating and frightening, of this rapidly evolving technology, check out one of these must-read books on the subject.
