Greetings Wolf Pack! Greetings Wolf Pack!

zoom_out_map

As we come to the end of this school year, we want to extend our sincere thanks to each of you for your ongoing partnership and care. This year brought many moments to celebrate—student growth, dedicated teaching, and a continued commitment to learning. At the same time, we recognize that it has also brought difficult moments that have impacted our school community.

We know that trust is the foundation of the relationship between families and schools. Please know how seriously we take that responsibility and how committed we are to creating a safe, supportive environment for every student. We will continue to work closely with the police on the current investigation and will share out information when/if possible following the lead of the Sun Prairie Police Department.

Thank you for being part of our One West community. This is our final newsletter of the school year. We wish you and your family a safe and restful summer, and we look forward to the return of The Howl in August.

Community Support Community Support

Last week Wednesday you received an email sharing that an investigation is being conducted by the Sun Prairie Police Department into allegations of inappropriate communications and relationships between staff and students from Sun Prairie West High School. Any staff members currently involved in the investigation have been placed on administrative leave and no longer have access to school district facilities or resources. School and district administrators are and will continue to be assisting law enforcement in their investigation.

We understand that issues surrounding the behavior of staff will raise concerns and unease, and we want to assure you that the safety and well-being of every student remains our absolute top priority. Because of the ongoing investigation and its relation to personnel / confidential student matters, we are unable to provide any more details at this time. Furthermore, as we are cooperating fully with an investigation being conducted by the Sun Prairie Police Department, our ability to share specific details is significantly limited by legal and investigative protocols. While we know you expect and deserve transparent communication, we must prioritize the integrity of these processes and the privacy of our students above all else. Please know that we are taking this matter very seriously and are committed to addressing it thoroughly and appropriately.

We know that student support needs will likely continue this week and may continue into the summer once we have begun summer break. If you believe your child needs specific support at school, please see the resources below:

  • Through the remainder of the school year connect with WEST Student Services

  • Katie Barnes - Sun Prairie Police Department: Coordinated Response Specialist at Office: 608-825-0868 or kbarnes@cityofsunprairie.com

  • Behavioral Health Resource Center (BHRC) is a non-crisis, voluntary person and family centered service designed to help connect to mental health services

  • For immediate Crisis Stabilization Support, you may qualify for services with Youth Connect. Sun Prairie Police or SPW Student Services can support completing a referral, as appropriate.

Much to Celebrate Much to Celebrate

As we started the 24-25 school year we grounded ourselves in Year 2 of our Theory of Action.

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve, we reviewed all the key data points on our school scorecard and chose two areas to focus on more closely. These were selected because they show the greatest need for growth and have the potential to make the biggest impact. By making strong progress in these areas, we believe we can spark improvement across many other parts of the student experience as well.

Last spring was the first time that the question" Over the past week, I've been acknowledged or recognized for my efforts, behaviors and performance" was asked on the Employee Engagement Survey. Our combined responses for Agree and Strongly Agree was 38%. We identified this as a strong area of need. If our adults are not feeling seen, known and valued they will not be well equipped and supported to empower our students. We focused throughout the year on embedding a culture of celebration, acknowledgement and feedback into our One West community. We are proud to share that we met our goal of 80% of staff who took the survey responding positively.

This year we have tracked three different attendance metrics for our students:

  • SIS- Students in Seats- this number breaks down a students daily attendance rate by the 5 possible blocks (includes SP30), so if a student is absent for one block but present for the other 4 they would have 80% attendance for that day. This number will always be higher than full day.
  • Full Day Attendance- This is what it sounds like this counts what percentage of days a student is present for an entire day. This may include being absent for excused absences, sporting events, etc.
  • The Gap: The gap between SIS and full day attendance gives a very general idea of how commonly students are in the hallway and not in class. This is not an exact science as the full day attendance does reflect absences that are excused, however, it gives us a pulse of students that may be in the building but not attending every class on time.

Our Problem of Practice for the 2024–25 school year focuses on improving the attendance rate of our Black/African American students. Data showed this as the area with the greatest need for growth in order to better support all of our students. We also believed that if we were to focus on attendance for our Black/African American students that would support improved attendance for all of our students.

SIS Attendance Over the Years

The chart below shows the SIS attendance rates for our students broken down by demographic for the 3 years of West High School and the growth from year 1 to year 2 and year 2 to year 3.

*Our numbers of students from Native American or Native Hawaiian backgrounds were too low to report out this year because it would be potentially student identifiable information*

Full Day Attendance

The chart below shows the Fully Day Attendance rates for our students broken down by demographic for the 3 years of West High School and the growth from year 1 to year 2 and year 2 to year 3.

*Our numbers of students from Native American or Native Hawaiian backgrounds were too low to report out this year because it would be potentially student identifiable information*

Gap in Attendance Rates

One way to get a pulse on students that may be at school but not attending all of their classes or attending all of their classes on time is to analyze the difference between a students SIS rate and their full day attendance rate. The chart below analyzes the gab in attendance rates for the first three years of West as well as the growth from year 1 to 2 and from year 2 to 3.

*Our numbers of students from Native American or Native Hawaiian backgrounds were too low to report out this year because it would be potentially student identifiable information*

We are so proud to celebrate this incredible growth as a community!

  • Attendance rate of every cross cut of our community, in every data analysis point INCREASE from 23-24 to 24-25 school year!
  • We also celebrate gap closing gains for our students that were not yet being well served by our systems and structures primarily Black/African American students but also our Latinx students, our students who identify as Two or More races, our Multilingual Students, our students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Additionally, last year only 47% of our Black/African American students had 90%+ attendance at the end of the school year and currently 61% of our Black/African American students have 90%+ attendance. We still have much work to do to ensure our systems are supporting ALL students, and we also need to pause to celebrate this incredible growth.

Once graduation has passed and the school year officially wraps up, our Guiding Coalition (leadership team) will come together for two days of reflection and planning. During this time, we will revisit and revise our Theory of Action for the next two years and identify a new Problem of Practice to guide our work.

Based on our data, this next area of focus will center on improving reading and math outcomes for either our Black/African American students or our students with disabilities. At the same time, we’ll continue to strengthen our systems around student attendance and staff affirmation and feedback. Now that more students are consistently in classrooms and staff are being supported, our next step is to ensure that all students—especially those who have been historically marginalized—are truly thriving academically.

Cell Phone Feedback Cell Phone Feedback

Congratulations and Welcome AP Barth!

We are thrilled to welcome John Barth to the SP West High School Principal Team as an Associate Principal, pending approval by the Board of Education on June 9th, 2025.

Mr. John Barth joins us in the role of Associate Principal at Sun Prairie West after teaching high school Social Studies in Sun Prairie for 13 years. In addition to his teaching experience, John has held positions as Summer School Principal, Department Chair, and Senior Class Advisor. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Studies Education from UW-Eau Claire and a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Cardinal Stritch University.

John and his wife (also a Sun Prairie educator) live in Sun Prairie with their three children. Outside of school, you are likely to see John with his family at Piranhas swim meets, Sun Prairie soccer games, in the drive-thru at Culver’s (crazy for cookie dough is his favorite flavor of the day), or spending time outdoors.

John is honored and excited to begin his work serving the students, families, staff, and the community of Sun Prairie West when he enters his role on July 1. We sincerely thank the interview teams for volunteering their time to help with this incredibly important decision and invite you to help us warmly welcome Mr. Barth to his new role!

Missing something? This is your Last Chance to get it back! Everything unclaimed will be donated after the last day of school. So...many...water bottles... 🙃

Student Devices

This letter is to provide information about your chromebook as we approach the end of the year. Students in grades 9, 10 and 11 will keep their school-issued device over the summer unless they are leaving the district, in which case the device should be returned by June 9th, 2025. Students can still access school applications and use their device over the summer. Filtering software will still be active throughout the summer. Students are expected to care for their device over the summer just as they would during the school year.

Seniors must return their devices on or before our last day of school on June 12th, 2025.

Device Collection for Seniors will begin on June 9, 2025 in the LMC. Students will be called to the library by the first initial of their last name. If you no longer need your device, feel free to turn it in earlier. Devices and chargers and any Kajeet Hotspots or Smartspots will be collected. If you have lost your charger, there will be a fee of $15 added to your Infinite Campus account. Lost or damaged device fees will also be added to your account in Infinite Campus. This fee will vary based on the age of the device and type of damage.

Google Takeout Instructions (transferring student account data to a personal account) will be posted in the senior class Google Classroom and are linked below. Senior student accounts will be deactivated on July 1, 2025, and should begin transferring their data as soon as possible to avoid loss of files. Since your personal Google account is not considered the “owner” of your school account’s data, you may lose access to those files once your student account is deactivated, unless you go in from your personal account and “MAKE A COPY”.

Fines for overdue library materials, missing Chromebooks and chargers will be assessed on June 12th or earlier. Any materials needing to be returned after this date should be brought to the District Service Center at 501 S. Bird St.

SOPHOMORES! PSAT

The PSAT (Preliminary SAT) is a valuable standardized test co-sponsored by the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. It serves as both practice for the SAT and as the first step toward qualifying for scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Program. The PSAT helps students assess their skills in key areas—Reading, Math, and Writing/Language.

This test is particularly important for 11th-grade students who are looking to gain insight into their SAT performance and open doors to scholarship opportunities. The PSAT is typically offered in the fall, and 11th-grade students can register to take the exam on an optional basis.

Important: If you would like to take the PSAT exam during the fall of the 2025-2026 school year on Wednesday October 22nd, please complete the attached Google form by Tuesday September 16th, 2025. For more details or questions, feel free to reach out to Ms. Thao and Mr. Medema!

Tiktok Chromebook Destruction Trend

Dear Sun Prairie Parents, Caregivers and Students,

We want to alert you to a troubling trend circulating on TikTok that encourages students to intentionally short-circuit or damage their school-issued Chromebooks. This behavior poses significant safety hazards, not only to the students involved, but also to those around them as these actions have the potential to cause a school-issued device to start on fire. Such actions undermine and disrupt our learning environments. We take this matter very seriously and are committed to ensuring our schools remain safe and focused on learning.

Students found intentionally damaging their Chromebook - whether to follow this trend or for any other reason - will be held fully accountable. This includes being charged the full replacement cost of the device, which will exceed two-hundred dollars. Any additional damage to other school property from these actions will also result in fines. Beyond the financial consequences, such actions may also result in disciplinary measures according to district policy.

Our technology is a tax-payer provided resource that is a vital part of students’ learning, and its intentional destruction not only violates district expectations but also impacts the broader school community. We ask all caregivers to please speak with their children about the dangers and consequences of participating in harmful social media challenges. As always, we appreciate your partnership in helping us maintain a positive, safe, and respectful learning environment. Resources for parents and caregivers to reference for discussing social media and digital citizenship with their children can be found at https://www.commonsensemedia.org/.

If you have questions or concerns, we encourage you to contact your school principal directly. Thank you for your continued support in putting students’ learning and safety first.

Regards,
Curt Mould
Director of Digital Media, Innovation and Strategy

Buckle Up, Phone Down

We are teaming up with the @Wisconsin Department of Transportation to encourage students, staff, and families to take the Buckle Up Phone Down pledge! Over 9,000 crashes a year in Wisconsin involve distracted driving, and cell phones are one of the biggest distractions.

The challenge is on! Pledge to always wear your seat belt and put your phone down while driving at: wisconsindot.gov/bupd/spsd. Choose your high school so we can see which school gets the highest percentage of pledges!

Measles

This spring there have been measles cases in several states. Measles is a very contagious virus. It spreads easily and quickly when people cough and sneeze. If you haven’t had the measles vaccine, just being in a room with someone who has measles can make you sick.

Measles can be a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and even death. It can be prevented by the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine.

  • The vaccine is safe and effective. The best protection against measles is measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine.

  • Most people are vaccinated as young children because two doses are required to go to school. One dose is usually given at 12-15 months of age, and a second dose is given before the start of kindergarten at 4-6 years of age.

  • Most people who get measles are unvaccinated. When the measles finds a group of unvaccinated people, it can spread very quickly.

Check your immunization records

You can check your child’s immunization record on the Wisconsin Immunization Registry or with your healthcare provider.

If our school records do not show that your child has received two doses of the MMR vaccine you will receive additional communication from the school.

Get Vaccinated

  • If you have health insurance: reach out to your healthcare provider to make an appointment.

  • If you don’t have health insurance or if your child is on BadgerCare: You can make an appointment with Public Health Madison Dane County by calling (608) 266-4821.

Watch for Measles Symptoms

Measles symptoms begin with a fever, cough, runny nose, and watery eyes, followed by a rash that usually spreads from the head to the rest of the body. If you or your child has these symptoms, call your healthcare provider. Do not go to a clinic, urgent care, or emergency room without calling first.

For more information on measles, please visit https://www.cdc.gov/measles/
