Principal's Message

Dear Hallinan Families,

It's been such a busy and fun week at Hallinan - a perfect way to round out the calendar year.

Thank you to our amazing PTO and wonderful Librarian Mrs Landau for a well planned and very successful book fair. It was an absolute joy to see everyone so enthusiastic to shop for books and eager to tell me about their findings!

If you are looking for things to do over break, don't forget about the Read-A-Thon! Watch this video and read the information below to learn more. Have students check out the Hallinan Page Turners at this link for some inspiration. And, encourage them to create their own video, artwork or essay about what they are reading while away from school.

Looking for even more? i-Ready Personalized Instruction (My Path) is an excellent option to help keep your student's skills sharp and extend their learning. And I always highly recommend baking cookies or making soup!

Wishing you a beautiful holiday and a very happy New Year! I look forward to seeing you all back at Hallinan on January 3.

Winter Break Read-A-Thon! Winter Break Read-A-Thon!

zoom_out_map

Your elementary student is invited to join in LOSD’s first-annual Winter Break Read-A-Thon! It’s a fun program developed by our high school students. Your child will learn more about it during library time. Keep reading for more information and watch the video.

What is a “Read-A-Thon”?:

  • All elementary school students in LOSD are encouraged to read as much as they can over winter break! Read alone, with an adult, listen to an audiobook…whatever inspires a love of literacy!

  • Family and friends are asked to pledge an amount for each book their student reads to a corresponding class fund.

  • One-time donations and/or continuous pledges per books read are accepted.

  • All donations support our local Lake Oswego Public Library and SMART Reading, an Oregon-based organization whose goal is to provide access to books and reading sessions to students in need.

Our Goal:

  1. To encourage elementary school students to read at least five books over winter break.

  2. To inspire elementary school students to raise $20 each to help us reach our district-wide goal of $5,000+ in donations!

  3. To promote healthy reading habits throughout our local district, and to improve literacy across Oregon!

How to participate:

We are using a website called 99Pledges to keep track of reading and collect donations.

Here's how it works:

  1. Click here to create an account for your student. Scroll down to the bottom, and click "Add Participant".

  2. Once you fill out the quick form, you will receive an email from 99Pledges. The email will have two links: one to manage your page and one to share with others to collect donations.

  3. Once your student's page is created, send the link to relatives and friends so they can help support your student in their reading goals! When sending the link, share how many books your student plans to read so their donors can pledge accordingly.

  4. Each time your student finishes a book, update the book tracker on the website!

Prizes:

  • Every LOSD school that raises $3,000 or more by the end of the Winter Break Read-A-Thon will be entered into a drawing for a school-wide donut party! (Note: We will have alternative prizes for students with dietary restrictions or allergies).

  • The school that reads the most books will be crowned "The FIRST-EVER LOSD Read-A-Thon Champions!", and will receive a giant banner to put in their library, presented by us at a celebratory school assembly!

  • On top of this, a prize will be awarded to the student who reads the most in each grade across the district!

Thank You!

Thank you to our amazing LOSD community for all the time and support you dedicate to our local community and kids. It’s because of your support we can host fun events such as these. We wish you all the best this holiday season, and happy reading!

Hello Hallinan Families!

Slices of Gratitude

A special thank you to our amazing Book Fair team Tracy DeOgny, Erin Saylor, and Meghan Hill. The book fair and the stuffy sleepover were simply magical.

And a special thank you to Tracy DeOgny who has led the Book Fair team from her heart for many years. Many of the books our kids check out have come from the funds her hard work created. If you see Tracy, please tell her thank you for contributing to the Hallinan community in such a meaningful way.

H.O.P.E.S.

A very special THANK YOU to our amazing Hallinan Community for your incredible generosity in supporting our friends at Alder Elementary! We collected presents for 50 grateful families and we filled 350 snack bags which will directly impact the Alder Community this holiday season. You are AWESOME!!!

Book Fair Wrap

Thanks to everyone who visited, volunteered at and supported this year's book fair! It was a huge success and wonderful to see the students so excited! Book fair sales were over $14,000 and 25% of total proceeds will go back to Hallinan and support our library. In addition, the school raised over $800 in All for Books donations, of which 100% will benefit Hallinan. A very special thank you to our dedicated librarian, Mrs. Landau, and the many parent volunteers who's hard work made it possible.

Oregon State Assessment Opt-Out Form Oregon State Assessment Opt-Out Form

Each school year, Oregon students take assessments to meet federal requirements. The purpose of these assessments is to provide data that schools can use to ensure that every child is on track and achieving learning goals.

State law requires us to inform you that a form is available from the State Department of Education that allows you to opt your child out of the math and English Language Arts assessments for the current school year. Should you wish to opt out your child, fill out the form and submit it to the main office at your child’s school. Please note the submission deadlines listed on the form. Meeting the deadline will help the school with planning and preparation. If you wish your child not to participate in the science assessment for grades 5, 8, and 11, submit this request in writing to the principal of your child's school.

If you have questions or want more information about state assessments, please contact your child’s principal or teacher(s).

Winter i-Ready Winter i-Ready

This Winter, all elementary students will complete two online i-Ready assessments. Like Fall, one is for math and the other is for reading. i-Ready is a diagnostic that will help us determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor their progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows us to meet your child where they are and provides us with data to inform and tailor instruction to accelerate growth. This is the second of three i-Ready assessments we give each year, and the results will be shared with parents.

Practice Skills at Home with i-Ready Personalized Instruction (My Path) Practice Skills at Home with i-Ready Personalized Instruction (My Path)

To unlock i-Ready's full potential, students should access 45 minutes of instruction per subject (reading and math) per week. Each student's i-Ready Personalized Instruction (My Path) provides instruction at their individual level, allowing them to practice the skills they need to be successful.

With holiday breaks coming up, i-Ready Personalized Instruction (My Path) is an excellent option to help keep your student's skills sharp and extend their learning.

If you have any questions about how to access i-Ready Personalized Instruction (My Path) on your student's device, please feel free to contact your teacher.
