Principal's Message
Semester Halfway Mark & A Big Week Ahead!
Hard to believe, but we have officially reached the halfway mark of the semester! We want to give a special shoutout to our Alternative Learning Center (ALC) students, who are wrapping up their quarter this week. We are so proud of the dedication and hard work they continue to put into their goals.
Looking ahead, next week is huge for our music program! Come out and support our talented students as they present Frozen the Musical, and don't miss our upcoming Band Concert on Monday, November 2nd at 7:00 PM.
Beyond the stage and classroom, we are thrilled to share that 83% of our students participate in extra-curricular activities ranging from sports, band, and choir to our wide variety of co-curricular clubs. The data is clear: involved students are more focused, engaged, and successful in school.
While 83% is fantastic, our goal is to get even closer to 100%! We encourage every student to find something that sparks their interest in the many clubs and activities we offer and get involved today. There is a place for everyone here!
We belong HERE.
Mrs. Walter
Detroit Lakes High School, E-Laker, & Alternative Learning Center Principal

7 Grandfather Teachings
History of the Seven Teachings
According to an oral traditional story, the Seven Teachings were given to the Anishinaabe early in their history. When the Seven Grandfathers sent the Messenger to learn about the current state of the Anishinaabe people, they were told that people were not living in harmony with each other, nor with the rest of creation In a vision quest, the Messenger found a child worthy of the teachings, and the Seven Grandfathers tutored the child in the βgood way of life.β Each Grandfather instructed the child with one teaching, which collectively became known as the Seven Teachings. When you follow the Seven teachings, you will live a good and happy life. This youtube video helps explain the Seven Teachings. Our 7 Grandfather Teachings
November Teaching - HONESTY
Honesty - gwayakwaadiziwin (gwaa-yuck-waa-dizzy-win)
Honesty is represented by either the raven or sabe. They both understand who they are and how to walk in their life. βSabe reminds us to be ourselves and not someone we are not. An honest person is said to walk tall like Kitchi-sabeβ¦ Like Kitchi-sabe, Raven accepts himself and knows how to use his gift. He does not seek the power, speed or beauty of others. He uses what he has been given to survive and thrive. So must you.β The Seven Sacred Teachings of White Buffalo Calf Woman, by: David Bouchard & Dr. Joseph Martin. To walk through life with integrity is to know honesty. Be honest with yourself. Recognize and accept who you are. Accept and use the gifts you have been given. Do not seek to deceive yourself or others.
