The Chesak Chatter
July 17, 2026

From the Principal’s Corner 💛
Greetings Chesak Families and Friends,
Last week was full of connection and celebration at Chesak! During Start With Hello Week, our Cheetahs celebrated kindness with Dolly Parton Kindness Day and Spirit Week fun. We also celebrated positive choices at our first PBIS Rewards Day! 🎉
As we head into Week 6, we want to share a reminder about our upcoming practice lockdown drill. In cooperation with the Lake in the Hills Police Department, students and staff will practice the steps they would follow in the unlikely event of a safety threat. Students will stay with their regular teachers, practice in age-appropriate ways, and have an opportunity to ask questions.
The drill will not include a simulation of a shooting or active shooter event. Read more about the drill here. Please reach out if you have any questions.
Thank you for partnering with us to keep our Chesak Cheetahs safe! Together, we are growing Bright Minds, Kind Hearts, and making a Big Impact!
Let’s keep adding color, kindness, and Cheetah pride as we shine into week six!!
#KindnessColorsOurSchool🎨 #BeKind💛 #BeBrave💪 #BeYou😊
With gratitude,

Huntley 158 Family Learning Series (virtual)
Topic: School Anxiety, Avoidance & Refusal: Symptoms and Interventions
When: Tuesday, September 29, 2026, 6PM - 7PM
Presenter: Jacqueline Rhew, LCPC
Open to all Huntley 158 families
Join via Google Meet
September is Attendance Awareness Month and Huntley 158’s motto is “Your Presence is Your Power.” Every day a student is in school is an opportunity for them to build relationships, learn and access support.
The district is kicking off its first virtual Family Learning Series this year with a presentation by Jacqueline Rhew, a licensed clinical professional counselor, who specializes in school refusal and anxiety in children. The virtual event is free and open to all Huntley 158 families.
Rhew’s presentation will provide parents and caregivers with practical strategies to support their child who may be struggling with school anxiety, avoidance, and school refusal.
She will explore factors that contribute to school avoidance and help parents learn how to recognize early warning signs and unhelpful coping patterns, and better understand how anxiety and avoidance can reinforce one another.
In addition, Rhew will outline specific interventions to help children manage anxiety, increase motivation, set realistic goals, and gradually re-engage in school. Parents will also learn strategies for responding to anxiety without unintentionally reinforcing avoidance, promoting healthy coping and problem-solving, and using communication that builds self-advocacy, confidence, and independence.
👀 Vision & Hearing Screenings
Mandated Vision and Hearing Screenings will take place at Chesak on September 29, September 30, and October 1. Screenings will be conducted by the McHenry County Department of Health.
Please review the links below for additional information about the screening process.
Kindergarten Families: A practice vision screening template is also attached. We encourage you to practice with your child at home so they feel comfortable and prepared for their screening.
