KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES
Happiest Friday Explorer Families!
This week we received the official word that Northwood will not have any changes to the number of homeroom sections at any grade level. As the district monitored our enrollment over the first ten days of school, our ‘in seat’ attendance aligned close enough to their projections so that no homeroom adjustments were recommended. However, they are still reviewing support personnel allocations, and if needed, those changes will be communicated once we have those details.
With the students in their groove during the lunch hour, we’ve discovered that we have groups of students that enjoy playing Crazy 8s or Uno during lunch. We already have a few decks of cards, but if any families would like to donate small, elementary-level card games or games with no pieces, our lunch monitoring crew would love to have more available! Now that we’re past the first two weeks of school, we have opened our Parent Café. If you would like to have lunch with your child(ren), please check in at the front office. ID is required. Then you’ll head to meet the class at the cafeteria doors. As a reminder, we ask that no meals from outside restaurants are brought in.
Enjoy the beautiful weekend!
With gratitude,
Heather Q. Rucker, principal
SECOND GRADE EXPLORERS
This week in second grade, we have been having so much fun learning! We built numbers using ones cubes and tens rods, and we even had the opportunity to practice with hundreds flats by building little houses and giving them their "number names." We have also enjoyed learning about Georgia's five regions through virtual field trips and practicing note-taking for one of the first times. In addition, we have started building our reading stamina and tracking our reading minutes in Beanstack!
THIRD GRADE EXPLORERS
The first few weeks of third grade have been filled with excitement as students have been learning classroom procedures, routines, and expectations. They have spent time building a strong classroom community through engaging activities such as the Wrinkled Heart lesson, the Soup, Salad, or Sandwich activity, the Make 11s game, and many others. Students are adjusting well socially by forming new friendships, practicing teamwork, and becoming more comfortable participating in class discussions and activities. It has been a wonderful start to the school year, and everyone is doing a fantastic job adjusting to the expectations and routines of third grade.
GET INVOLVED: NORTHWOOD CLUB APPLICATIONS
Northwood is excited to offer Explorers several morning and afternoon clubs for their enrichment and enjoyment.
Participants are expected to adhere to Northwood PBIS behavior expectations both during the school day and during club activities. We want your child's participation in school clubs to be a great experience of learning and interaction with other students. Our three Northwood expectations “Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Engaged” will continue to be taught during all club activities. Club advisors will use Northwood’s Reflect and Refocus forms to teach positive behavior and “stop and think” strategies. Club participation is dependent on students following these PBIS procedures.
Below is the Northwood Club Schedule and applications with more details about deadlines and start dates.
AVID GOAL OF THE WEEK
Northwood is proud to be an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) school. AVID Elementary equips students with the foundational skills and mindset needed for future success. Our staff is focused on enhancing instructional consistency, fostering a college and career readiness mindset, increasing student engagement and building organizational and study skills.
As part of this, each week Northwood will be focused on one goal as a school. Be sure to ask your child about it!
Next week's AVID goal is: to be responsible with my device.
NORTHWOOD STUDENT & FAMILY HANDBOOK
The Northwood Student & Family Handbook is filled with important information about school policies and procedures to help our school run smoothly and safely. We suggest that parents and students review the handbook together. If you have questions after reading, please call the school office.
We believe that a collaborative partnership between parents, community members, and business partners is a must for student success. Educating your child is a partnership—together we SHINE!

DISMISSAL CHANGES? MAKE THEM IN PICKUP PATROL
Northwood has partnered with PickUp Patrol to help us track dismissals. PickUp Patrol provides families with a convenient way to make changes to your child’s dismissal plans and helps ensure that students are accurately and safely dismissed each day.
If you need to change how your child should be dismissed, you should submit that information via PickUp Patrol before 1:30 pm on the day of the change, and our staff will be notified. We no longer accept dismissal requests via email or paper notes. Please do not email teachers directly.
All dismissal information and changes must be entered into PickUp Patrol.
If you have any questions, please first check the PickUp Patrol Parent Guide. If you need additional assistance, please reach out to Mrs. Robertson at Northwood’s front desk, robertsonl1@fultonschools.org.

CAFETERIA NEWS
ICE CREAM & BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
Your child will be recognized at school on his/her birthday, with an announcement on Explorervision and a special birthday pencil. Please do not send cake, cupcakes, balloons, party favors, or party invitations to school as these will not be distributed. If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday at school you may purchase ice cream from our cafeteria for your child’s class.
- Please email your Explorer’s teacher to find out how many students are in their class.
- Email our Cafeteria Manger Rosa Gutierrez at gutierrezabr@fultonschools.org, to place your order at least TWO FULL WEEKS IN ADVANCE of your Explorer’s birthday.
- Ice cream is still $1 each for birthdays. The simplest way to handle the cost is to have money on your Explorers account via MySchoolBucks.
CAFETERIA PRINCIPAL ACCOUNT FUND
Did you know? Our school community has a Cafeteria Principal Account Fund. This account will be used to fulfill any meal costs for students that reach an account balance of zero. We often have families and extended family members that ask if or how they can pay off lunch balances or support our students in this way, now the process of doing so is easy!
Should you be interested in adding to the Cafeteria Principal Account Fund, just send a check or cash to school in an envelope to Mrs. Rosa Gutierrez, our cafeteria manager, and notate that the funds go to the Principal Fund. Please reach out to Mrs. Gutierrez, gutierrezabr@fultonschools.org, if you have any questions.
LUNCHTIME REMINDERS
Parents may eat lunch with students after the first two weeks of school - starting August 17th. Teachers eat with the students during the first week, and the students are learning the routine the second week. We also encourage nutritious lunches; therefore sodas, canned drinks, fast food, candy, energy drinks, etc. are discouraged. We kindly ask that you refrain from bringing these items to school or sending them in lunchboxes.
