July 2025

Catholic Social Teaching calls us to live in solidarity. As the USCCB reminds us, "We are one human family whatever our national, racial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences." From living with our biological family, we know that this relationship brings great joys and great sorrows. While watching the news or scrolling through social media, we can see that our one human family is in distress. What can we do as people of faith to alleviate this suffering? In this month's newsletter, you'll find some ways to pray, act, and give to help our brothers and sisters both in our local community and abroad.

Saints Joachim and Anne | Franciscan Media

We believe that Jesus is truly God and truly human, and this feast of his grandparents is a testimony to that faith. While the names Joachim and Anne may be legendary, we know that Jesus had grandparents in the parents of Mary (as well as those of Saint Joseph). Our God truly became human and lived among us.

CRS Catholic Advocacy Update

If you are a CRS supporter, you may have recently received this email from them. In case you didn't, here is the latest update and expression of gratitude from CRS and the US Bishops.

"With near-daily policy changes from the White House, the last six months have been a whirlwind. Your unwavering support of CRS and your advocacy for the U.S. government to remain an integral part of God’s call to love and serve our neighbor has been a source of great hope.

‌

It’s an unprecedented time in our history. Not only was our critical humanitarian funding from the U.S. government significantly cut, but CRS programs funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture that provided children healthy school lunches were drastically reduced. On top of that, on July 18, Congress approved the administration's request to cancel roughly $8 billion of funds for international assistance. Although lawmakers inserted an amendment to protect some global health funds, the impacts of the overall cuts will be felt for years to come.

We are profoundly grateful for the support you have shown CRS, not just over the past six challenging months, but throughout the years of your dedicated service to our global family. Though we mourn the profound losses we've faced over these months, we must also celebrate the tremendous impact your steadfast advocacy has made:

‌

  • The administration resumed payments, allowing lifesaving programs to deliver critical services.
  • Ten CRS programs were saved, enabling the Church to continue its mission to protect human life and dignity.
  • Although the rescissions bill was approved, Congress preserved $400 million for global health initiatives. This vital funding will save lives.
  • You’ve opened new opportunities for engagement with congressional offices.

Just as one bill doesn’t get us to justice, no single vote is the final word—no matter how disheartening a result may feel. We must find ways to keep moving forward because this pursuit of justice is worth every effort. Our sisters and brothers need us, and we need each other. Together, we can turn our unwavering faith into lasting change.

‌

Thank you for your commitment and being a beacon of light during these challenging times.

‌

Blessings,

‌
