FRESH NEWS February 11, 2026
Highland Families,
There’s something so magical about sharing a book together. I have absolutely loved this experience of enjoying the book The Lemonade War together as a school community. I hope it has sparked the joy of reading aloud, listening to others read, and falling in love with realistic characters. This new tradition we have of having a culminating family night for our all-school read is a highlight for me. Please DO plan to join us for our Family Night next Thursday from 6-7:30. We HEARD you that dinner would be a nice addition to this event, and PTA is offering a LOW-cost meal option for you beginning at 5:30 in the Commons.
Come ready to connect, see your friends, enjoy a FREE cookie and lemonade, and visit one of our teacher-created stations. In addition, we have awesome experiences from Junior Achievement of Washington, and real-life KID business owners selling their wares in the gym. And did I mention the Hey Girl coffee truck?
I am going to be so bold as to say this is a Can’t-Miss event, maybe even worth missing a sports practice in order to attend! Tell them your kid’s principal REALLY wants you there - it won’t be the same without YOU!!
See you then!
Mr. H
P.S. This a friendly straight-from-Mr.H reminder about two parts of sharing our campus together.
There is NO left turn out of the parent loop. It’s been determined by the City of Lake Stevens to be unsafe to turn left during congested arrival and dismissal time. Please help do your part by taking the extra moment to turn RIGHT (south) onto 113th.
A reminder that we have ZERO, Zilch, Nada supervision prior to 9:00 AM. If you drop your child early, they are unsupervised in an area that includes other children, traffic, and YOUR unpredictable child. Capeesh?

What's Buzzing Around Highland

Hello Highland!
Did you know that February is Random Acts of Kindness month? It’s one of my favorite times of the year to encourage kids to “spread kindness” in little and big ways! Even walking down the hallway, giving out big smiles freely is spreading kindness and it’s so easy to do. It’s amazing how a big smile not only lifts others, but ourselves as well. So, in the month that also includes Valentine’s Day, let’s all try smiling big, helping others, spreading love and joy, and making kindness the norm!
Cheers,Mrs. C

Math Minute with Mrs. Abels
Ways to support your child’s math learning at home.
Counting
One of the most simple ways to support your child’s math learning at home is to count.
By the end of Kindergarten students should be able to count to 100 by 1’s and 10’s
By the end of First grade students should be able to count to 120 starting at any number less than 120.
By the end of Second grade students should be able to count within 1000; and skip count by 5’s, 10’s and 100’s.
As students get older they need lots of practice counting around the 10’s and 100’s. For example:
“Let's start counting at 338”
“Count backwards from 503”
“Let’s count backwards from 140 by 10’s.
“Count forward by 10’s starting at 7” (7, 17, 27, 37…)
Make it fun, keep it light - find the joy in numbers! All of this practice will help your child on their journey to having good number sense, which in turn helps them be the best mathematicians that they can be.
Remember - Math is Fun!!
