Keeping it R.E.A.L. (Respectful, Engaged, Accepting, Leaders)

To Think About….

The Teacher Who Believed

Every day, a student named Eric sat in the back of the classroom, convinced he wasn't smart enough to succeed. When assignments came back with low scores, he stopped raising his hand and started believing that trying wasn't worth it.

But his teacher noticed.

One afternoon, she pulled up a chair beside him and said, “Eric, I don't expect you to know everything today. I just need you to believe you're capable of learning something new tomorrow.”

She began checking in with him, celebrating small victories, and reminding him that mistakes weren't failures, they were steps toward success. She even shared with Eric and the class the Michael Jordan example of achieving success by failing forward. "I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I've been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." - Jordan (M.J.)

Weeks later, Eric raised his hand to answer a question. His answer wasn't perfect, but his confidence was growing. After class, he told his teacher, “I used to think I couldn't do it. Now I think I can.”

His teacher smiled. “That's where success begins.”

Moral of the Story:

Sometimes, the most important thing a teacher gives a student isn't an answer, a grade, or a lesson. It's the belief that they are capable of becoming more than they ever imagined.

One teacher. One student. One moment of belief. A lifetime of possibility.

"You must expect great things of yourself before you can do them."

-Michael Jordan (M.J.)
